Leading medical researcher receives award from UCD
The surprising biology of short RNA UCD is awarding the inaugural Ulysses Medal to Dr Phillip Sharp (MIT) for his outstanding contribution to biomolecular discovery and to advances in medical treatment of diseases such as multiple sclerosis, hepatitis and cancer. The event is kindly sponsored by SFI. Dr Phil Sharp was awarded the Nobel Prize for his discovery that an individual gene does not have to be a single, continuous stretch of DNA, but instead can be made up of several DNA segments. This discovery had major implications for genetic discovery and importantly for research into heredity diseases. Before this discovery, scientists believed that a gene was a continuous stretch of code within a long double-stranded DNA molecule. They worked on the basis that when a gene was activated, its information was copied into a single-stranded RNA molecule (known as a messenger RNA) which in turn translated the information into the production of a protein.

Nature of Tia Nelson
Chapter One
Specimen 60803 Nature does nothing uselessly.
—Aristotle Weight-saving Features Specimen 60803 is nearly two feet long, but even when it was alive and still possessed all its internal organs, it weighed barely a pound. Like most birds, Ivory-bills had to be light so they could fly. Their weight-saving features included the following: • Thin, hollow bones filled with “struts,” allowing air spaces that provide strength without adding weight. • No jawbone, no teeth, and no vertebrae in their tails. • A reproduction system with “external eggs,” which relieves the mother of the weight of a young bird developing within her body. • Many neck vertebrae make it possible to reach objects with their bills instead of having to use limbs, which would add weight. • A kite-like skeleton with fewer bones than most mammals have; the bones are fused together, providing support for flight. Louisiana State University—February 2002
Dr. James Van Remsen pulls open a wooden drawer and hands me an Ivory-billed Woodpecker. It’s dead, of course, one of seven Ivory-bill specimens in a dark room of the Louisiana State University Museum of Natural Science. It feels light and stiff—more like an object than a creature that once lived and breathed. Its wings are folded tightly in on themselves like an umbrella. The hollow eyes have been stuffed with cotton. The backswept crest of this male is more orange than red now, and the bill has darkened from ivory to tarnished gold. Dangling by a string from one gray ankle is a white tag that says “

Nobel laureate, successful entrepreneur, and prolific researcher, Phillip Sharp has forged a career spanning medicine, molecular biology, and biotechnology
PHILADELPHIA 12 October 2004 Phillip A. Sharp, Institute Professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), will present the 2004 Ullyot Public Affairs Lecture at the Chemical Heritage Foundation (CHF). The lecture will begin at 6:00 p.m. on 18 November in the Ullyot Meeting Hall. A reception will follow at 7:00.
"Untold numbers of people around the world owe their lives and health to Phil Sharp's work," said Arnold Thackray, CHF's president. "Dr. Sharp combines deep originality of mind with unusual gifts of vision, perseverance, and diplomacy. He is not only a Nobel laureate and cofounder of a leading biotech company, but also a major architect of MIT's central importance in the life sciences. We eagerly anticipate learning from his insights when he comes to CHF in November."
Sharp's lecture, "Chemistry, RNA Interference, and Biotechnology: Perspectives and Prospects," is presented by the Chemical Heritage Foundation, the Philadelphia and Delaware Sections of the American Chemical Society, the Department of Chemistry at the University of Pennsylvania, and the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia.

Inicio Buscador Recomendar sitio

WINS ACHIEVEMENT AWARD
Dan Adkins, 606-257-1754 March 11, 1999 (Lexington, Ky.) Kentucky native Phillip A. Sharp, whose research into molecular genetics has altered medical thinking about cancer and hereditary diseases, has been named the recipient of the 1999 University of Kentucky Libraries Medallion for Intellectual Achievement. He will be presented with the award during the UK Library Associates' annual meeting at 8:15 p.m. Wednesday, March 24 at the Singletary Center for the Arts. Michael Beschloss will present the Edward F. Prichard Jr. Lecture. Sharp, 54, a native of Falmouth, and his colleague Richard J. Roberts of Derby, England, dramatically changed the field of molecular genetics in 1977, when they discovered DNA molecules occurring in segments, or "splicing." Their research yielded to the possibility that cancer and other hereditary diseases may be treated by correcting problems in genetic splicing. Sharp and Roberts won the 1993 Nobel Prize in Medicine. Sharp is a trustee and member of the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation; chairman of the General Motors Cancer Research Foundation Awards Assembly; member of the Scientific Advisory Committee of the Imperial Cancer Research Fund in the United Kingdom; member of the President's Committee of Advisors on Science and Technology; and member of the Harvard-MIT Division of Health Sciences and Technology.

Christiane Nuesslein-Volhard was born on Oct. 20, 1942, in Frankfurt, Germany. Malpighi, Marcello (1628-94). The Italian physician and biologist Marcello Malpighi founded the sciences of microscopic anatomy and histology. Malpighi died in Rome on Nov. 30, 1694. Sharp, Phillip (born 1944) Molecular biologist and cowinner (with Richard Roberts) of the 1993 Nobel prize in medicine or physiology. Phillip Sharp and Richard Roberts won the Nobel prize for their seperate discoveries that genes are often split and and not continuious. They also both discovered that long sections of genes called introns, are not used for anything. This discovery gave scientists a new understanding of how genetic material evolves. Richard Roberts was born in Falmouth. Ky. COSTUMES To dress like a biologist you need a lab coat. All you need is an old, white, long sleeved shirt. Cut off the cuffs to make the sleeves straight, hem with fabric glue or hem tape. Cut the bottom of the shirt so it is straight (cut off the shirt tails) and hem the bottom as you did the sleeves. Add a test tube you can make from a piece of 1 inch clear tubing (found at hardware stores). For more costume help go to our costume pages.
