THE YEAR 1934
The happiness of youth
is pleasant to remember.
The windmill has collapsed,
capricious winds
are whistling, unconcerned.
A touching wayside cross remains.
A cornflower wreath like a nest without birds
and a frog blaspheming in the sedge.
Have mercy upon us!
A bitter time has come to the banks of sweet rivers, two years the factories have stood empty and children learn the language of hunger And still their laughter rings under the willow sadly silent in its silver. May they give us a happier old age SOMETIMES WE ARE TIED DOWN. . . Sometimes we are tied down by memories and there are no scissors that could cut through those tough threads. Or ropes! You see the bridge there by the House of Artists? A few steps before that bridge gendarmes shot a worker dead who was walking in front of me.

drying on a line,
floral lace at the breast
like rose windows in a Gothic cathedral. Lord,
shield Thou me from all evil.
ending in adultery and a pistol shot.
our earth embraced by its sweet breezes:
a dozen airy bodies. Those dozen girls made of light air
are dancing on the green lawn,
gently the wind is modelling their bodies, breasts, hips, a dimple on the belly there open fast, oh my eyes. Not wishing to disturb their dance and when any of them fell I greedily inhaled it through my teeth and bit its breast. Love, which we inhale and feed on, disenchanted, love that our dreams are keyed on, love, that dogs our rise and fall: nothing yet the sum of all. In our all-electric age nightclubs not christenings are the rage and love is pumped into our tyres.

Pessoa, Fernando. Seifert, Jaroslav. The Poetry of Jaroslav Seifert. Ed. by George Gibian. Tr. by Ewald Osers and George Gibian. June 1998. 256p. Catbird; dist. by Independent Publishers Group, paper, $14.95 (0-945774-39-7). DDC: 891.8. Szymborska, Wislawa. Poems New and Collected, 1957-1997. Tr. by Stanislaw Baranczak and Clare Cavanagh. Apr. 1998. 288p. Harcourt, $27 (0-15-100353-X). DDC: 891.8. When awarded the Nobel Prize in 1984, Seifert (1901-86) had long been a Czech national hero. When he fell ill, crowds stood watch outside his home. Like books of poetry in other small nations, his were top national best-sellers. In his youth an aesthetic and politically engaged writer of rhymed poems concerned with sonic beauty, Seifert turned in middle age to the Czech war experience, including the Holocaust, for subject matter, and in his old age to radiant memories of love and art written in free verse. His late poems are the easiest to translate, and 75 percent of this substantial enlargement of The Selected Poetry of Jaroslav Seifert (1986) is late work. Seifert's three great subjects are the beauties of women, art, and his nation. He characteristically celebrates all three within a single poem, although his perpetually thrilled adoration of women registers most powerfully and most winsomely. Perhaps Keats, had he lived to old age, would have become such a poet.

55. The Poetry Of Jaroslav Seifert, A Nobel Prize Winning Poet, Translated By Ewald
In 1984, jaroslav seifert (19011986) was the first Czech to win the Nobel Prize for Literature. Endowed with freshness, sensuality, and rich inventiveness

The Poetry of Jaroslav Seifert
Translated by Edward Osers, Edited by George Gibian
Milan Kundera on Seifert: "In 1969, when the Russian horror was battering the country
. . . [t]his little nation, trampled and doomed how could it possibly justify its existence?
There before us was the justification: the poet, heavy, with his crutches leaning against the table;
the poet, the tangible expression of the nation’s genius."
"Seifert's three great subjects are the beauties of women, art, and his nation. He characteristically
celebrates all three within a single poem, although his perpetually thrilled adoration of women
registers most powerfully and most winsomely. Perhaps Keats, had he lived to old age,
would have be come such a poet." Booklist
"These are simply marvelous poems ... What I find truly valuable about Osers' translations ...
is the way he renders the surprising variety of Seifert's images, and the way that he catches
the breathtaking suddenness of the poet's coiled metaphors." New York Press In 1984, Jaroslav Seifert (1901-1986) was the first Czech to win the Nobel Prize for Literature. "Endowed with freshness, sensuality, and rich inventiveness," the Nobel Committee stated, Seifert's poetry "provides a liberating image of the indomitable spirit and versatility of man. . . . He conjures up another world than that of tyranny and desolation a world that exists both here and now . . . one that exists in our dreams and our will and our art."

web resources amazon This page offers a sample of Seifert’s work in English translation — the translator here is Ewald Osers, generally regarded as the best so far — as well as the best pages we can find on the internet that deal with some aspect of Seifert’s life and work. Book searching and browsing are by means of the British, US and Canadian branches of Amazon, plus ABE Books, which is a global network of secondhand book dealers.
Seifert on Amazon The on-line bookseller Amazon.co.uk presently has — or at least claims to be able to get — both paperback and hardback editions of An Umbrella from Piccadilly , translated by Ewald Osers, in London Magazine imprint. The prices quoted are £5 and £7.95, though Amazon is adding a £2 ‘hard to find’ charge to both, which badly dents the value-for-money factor. Nevertheless, this title is excellent, strongly recommended, and unlikely to hurry back into print when stocks run out.
