In Paris studierte er Rechtswissenschaft und trat 1926 in den griechischen diplomatischen Dienst ein, den er 1962 als Botschafter in London beendete. Während der deutschen Besatzung folgte Seferis der griechischen Regierung ins Exil nach Ägypten. Als 1931 sein Gedichtband Strofi (Wende) erschien, wurde er als "Dichter der Zukunft" gefeiert. Zu seinen weiteren Werken gehören Mythistorima (1935, Mythische Geschichte), Gymnopaidia (1936, Gymnopädie), Imerologio katastromatos I (1940, Logbuch I), Tetradio gymnasmaton, 1928-1937 (1940, Übungsheft, 1928-1937), Imerologio katastromatos II (1945, Logbuch II), Kichli (1947, Drossel), O Vasilias tis Asinis (1948, Der König von Asine), Piimata, 1924-1946 (1950, Gedichte, 1924-1946), Imerologio katastromatos III (1955, Logbuch III), Tria kryfa piimata (1966, Geheime Gedichte). In 1931 he published, at this own expense, a collection of poetry with the ambiguous title Strophe (meaning both part of a poem and "turning-point"). The collection contained thirteen short poems, most of them in traditional metre and rhythm, and a more extensive poem, the cryptic "Erotikos Logos", in 96 rhymed 15-syllable verses, which vividly brings to mind Erotokritos , the celebrated Cretan 17th century poem. What became clear from the first appearance of this poet, who had already spent some years in Paris and in London studying law and English, was his desire to shed new light on the existing poetic landscape, overshadowed as it was both by the patriarchal figure of Palamas and by the ghost of Karyotakis.
