    Glenn T. Seaborg
    born April 19, 1912, Ishpeming, Mich., U.S.
died Feb. 25, 1999, Lafayette, Calif.
Full name, Glenn Theodore Seaborg. American nuclear chemist best known for his work on isolating and identifying elements heavier than uranium. He was awarded the 1951 Nobel Prize for Chemistry (with Edwin Mattison McMillan). Element 106, seaborgium , was named in his honour.
Seaborg was educated at the University of California at Los Angeles (A.B., 1934) and the University of California at Berkeley (Ph.D., 1937). At Berkeley he was successively research associate, instructor, and assistant professor (193745), becoming professor of chemistry in 1946. He served as Berkeley's chancellor in 1958 - 61.
With his coworkers, Seaborg added (1940-55) ten new elements encompassing atomic numbers 94 -102 and 106, of which plutonium (94) is the best known because of its use as a nuclear explosive and for nuclear power. During World War II, which he spent as a section chief at the University of Chicago Metallurgical Laboratory, the first industrial production of plutonium was undertaken in newly devised uranium reactors, and Seaborg had the primary responsibility for isolating plutonium from the reaction products.
The other new elements were: americium curium berkelium californium ... nobelium (102), and

Seaborg is a legendary name in chemistry today-so well-known and well-beloved, in fact, that C&EN readers gave him the third-highest number of votes in the balloting process that nominated "C&EN's Top 75 Distinguished Contributors to the Chemical Enterprise." here is a welcoming sort of clutter in the office of Glenn T. Seaborg- organized piles of books and papers, hundreds of photographs, a stepladder, various desk lamps, and, not surprisingly, several different displays of the periodic table of the elements. He is a busy man still engaged with a career in chemistry and physics that-so far- spans an incredible six decades. One of his displays of the periodic table-etched onto a glass plate-is an award that highlights in gold leaf the symbol for seaborgium, element 106. It is a potent reminder of Seaborg's legacy in the chemical sciences. In addition to being the discoverer of plutonium, he is the only chemist to hold patents on chemical elements (americium, curium). His revision of the periodic table-the actinide concept-still stands as the most significant since Mendeleyev's 19th-century design. Today, his research associates at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in Berkeley, Calif., are engaged in the search for new isotopes and new elements at the upper end of the periodic table, including the so-called superheavy elements.

The Russian experiments involved the bombardment of Lead isotopes with Chromium-54 ions while the American performed the collision of Oxygen ions with Californium-249 ions. However, it was not until 1993 that its existence was confirmed by the American university. The TWG gave full credit for the discovery of 106 to the Ghiorso-Hulet team. Although the Transfermium Working Group ruled that LBL and the Russian group should share credit for the discovery of elements 104 and 105 (a decision with which Seaborg and Ghiorso disagreed)

    Glenn T. Seaborg
Glenn Theodore Seaborg April 19 February 25 ) was an American atomic scientist . He was one of the first scientists to produce a transuranium element Of Swedish ancestry, Seaborg was born at Ishpeming, Michigan , grew up in South Gate, a suburb next to Watts in Los Angeles , took his A. B. degree at the University of California, Los Angeles in , and his doctorate at the University of California, Berkeley in He followed Frederick Soddy 's work investigating isotopes , and discovered many new isotopes of common elements. As a graduate student in the doing wet chemistry research for his advisor Gilbert Newton Lewis , Seaborg devoured the text Applied Radiochemistry by Otto Hahn , of the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute for Chemistry in Berlin . For several years, Seaborg conducted important research in artificial radioactivity using the Lawrence cyclotron at Cal Berkeley. He was excited to learn from others that nuclear fission was possible but also chagrined, as his own research might have led him to the same discovery.
