GLENN SEABORG:
Fizz and Fission
On April 19, 1912 the Seaborgs, a hard working Swedish family in the mining town of Ispeming, Michigan, welcomed a son they named Glenn Theodore. They taught him their family traditions and language from the old country. His father, grandfather, and great-grandfather shared another tradition: they were machinists and that is what Glenn might have been, but his parents decided to move to Southern California when he was ten years old. Seaborg attended high school in the Watts district of Los Angeles where his heritage was one of many ethnic backgrounds. His parents encouraged him to take business courses because the work was cleaner and more reliable than the machinist trade. He chose, however, the college prep courses. In his freshman year, Seaborg decided the textbook was too boring and refused to take a science course. He made the same decision in his sophomore year. In his junior year, he was reminded that if he wanted to go to UCLA he would have to take two years of laboratory science, so he signed up for chemistry. Mr. Reed, his teacher, had a tremendous love for science and built up a great deal of human interest with stories about chemists and chemical discoveries. Seaborg loved chemistry. The next year he took physics and he loved that, too. He thought of majoring in physics in college, but decided on chemistry. When Seaborg started college at UCLA in 1929, the school consisted of only four permanent buildings. To pay his tuition, he worked as a dock laborer, an apricot picker, a lab assistant at a rubber company, and a printer's apprentice. Seaborg's enthusiasm for science grew as he learned of new discoveries in nuclear chemistry and physics which were taking place in Europe and at the nearby Berkeley campus of the University of California. He soon decided to become involved in this emerging science.

April 19, 1912, Ishpeming, Mich., U.S.), American nuclear chemist best known for his work on isolating and identifying elements heavier than uranium. He was awarded the 1951 Nobel Prize for Chemistry (with Edwin Mattison McMillan Seaborg was educated at the University of California at Los Angeles (A.B., 1934) and the University of California at Berkeley (Ph.D., 1937). At Berkeley he was successively research associate, instructor, and assistant professor (1937-45), becoming professor of chemistry in 1946. He served as Berkeley's chancellor in 1958-61. With his coworkers, Seaborg added (1940-55) ten new elements encompassing atomic numbers 94-102 and 106, of which plutonium (94) is the best known because of its use as a nuclear explosive and for nuclear power. During World War II, which he spent as a section chief at the University of Chicago Metallurgical Laboratory, the first industrial production of plutonium was undertaken in newly devised uranium reactors, and Seaborg had the primary responsibility for isolating plutonium from the reaction products. The other new elements Seaborg codiscovered were: americium (95), curium(96)

"There is a beauty in discovery." Glenn Theodore Seaborg (1912-1999) W hat is there to say about a career in which you win all the major awards in your field and the accolades you garner come from highly esteemed peers, presidents and other world leaders, celebrities from the sports and entertainment industries, and students of all ages? What is there to say about a life that was shared with a beloved wife of more than 56 years, much of it in a redwood house they designed themselves in which they raised six children? What is there to say about a man whose discoveries altered the course of history, immortalized his name on the periodic table of chemical elements and in the archives of the Nobel Prize Awards, and extended the life of his own mother? SEABORG WAS EXULTANT OVER THE ADDITION OF SEABORGIUM TO THE PERIODIC TABLE Glenn Theodore Seaborg passed away in his home early in the evening on February 25, 1999, following a stroke he suffered last August. The news was carried by every major newspaper in the country. That is what happens when giants shed their mortal coils, but the sadness conveyed in many of those stories comes only when the deceased personally touched the lives of the writers. For those of us at this laboratory, whether you knew him as Glenn, or as Dr. Seaborg, it is no surprise that so many writers were moved to eloquence. To know him at all, or to know about his life is to recognize that Glenn Theodore Seaborg was truly a man in full.

Seaborg was born in Michigan and studied at the University of California. During part of World War II he was at the metallurgical laboratory at Chicago University, where much of the early work on the atomic bomb was carried out. He was professor at the University of California at Berkeley 1945-61, and chair of the Atomic Energy Commission 1961-71, encouraging the rapid growth of the US nuclear-power industry. He returned to Berkeley 1971.
Transuranic elements are all radioactive and none occurs to any appreciable extent in nature; they are synthesized by transmutation reactions. Seaborg was involved in the identification of plutonium (atomic number 94) 1940, americium (95) 1944-45, curium (96) 1944, berkelium (97) 1949, californium (98) 1950, einsteinium (99) 1952, fermium (100) 1953, mendelevium (101) 1955, and nobelium (102) 1957

Adventures in the Atomic Age: From Watts to Washington
from the publisher:
Glenn T. Seaborg won a Nobel Prize before he was forty. He helped to produce the material that makes atomic bombs explode, and discovered plutonium and the isotopes used to treat millions of cancer patients. He ran the University of California at Berkeley and advised nine U.S. presidents. Here is his autobiography the extraordinary story of a modest Swedish American who never strayed from his strong basic commitments throughout an illustrious career that brought him well-deserved national and international fame. Seaborg's story begins in Michigan in 1912 with his Scandinavian parents, but shifts quickly to California, where he got himself an education he didn't think he could afford during the dark days of the Depression. During World War II, the young Berkeley-trained chemist led the Manhattan Project group that devised the chemical extraction processes producing plutonium 239. Seaborg's assessment of the long-term consequences of this work is especially important. Seaborg also recounts the postwar drama of his scientific discoveries, notably his pioneering work on the many transuranium elements he co-discovered at the Radiation Laboratory at Berkeley work that earned him the Nobel Prize in 1951. Then, as chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission under President Kennedy, Johnson, and Nixon, Seaborg not only led the vast federal agency during difficult years but fought for a nuclear test ban treaty and argued in favor of the peaceful use of international control of atomic energy.

Mission "This book chronicles the life of one of America's foremost chemists and a true hero of the Manhattan Project. Dr. Seaborg would like you to believe that his "being in the right place at the right time" enabled him to achieve such monumental results, but it is quite evident that the modest Glenn Seaborg had an intellect and work ethic second to none. Although the book Glenn T. Seaborg Discoverer of Plutonium In His Own Words My romance with the transuranium elements started 63 years ago, in 1934, soon after I became a chemistry graduate student at the University of California, Berkeley. These were the undiscovered elements with atomic numbers greater than 92 (the atomic number of uranium), the heaviest naturally occurring element. We (the transuranium elements and I) were first introduced at the weekly chemistry seminar on nuclear science held in venerable Gilman Hall. Actually, I was introduced to what were thought to be the transuranium elements. I read articles by Enrico Fermi and coworkers about the induced radioactivities observed when elements such as uranium were bombarded with neutrons. Since some were published in their native Italian, they were a challenge to decipher.
