    GLENN THEODORE SEABORG
April 19, 1912, Ishpeming, MI - February 25, 1999, Lafayette, CA The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at UCLA mourns the loss of Glenn Seaborg, an illustrious graduate, a dear friend, and an ardent supporter. He passed away at the age of 86 in his home in Lafayette, California. Glenn moved with his family from Ishpeming, Michigan, at the age of 12 to what was to become South Gate, California. At the age of 14, he began the practice of keeping a daily journal, which he continued for the rest of his life. It was not until he reached Jordan High School that his interest in chemistry was stimulated by the enthusiasm of a teacher, and, in September of 1929, he entered UCLA, majoring in chemistry. In 1934 he graduated from UCLA with highest honors, and later the same year he began graduate school in chemistry at UC Berkeley. After receiving his Ph.D. degree from UC Berkeley, he worked for two years as the personal research assistant to Prof. G. N. Lewis at the Berkeley campus. In 1939, he became an Instructor in the College of Chemistry at UC Berkeley. The next phase of his life began in 1942, when he worked with Willard Libby and headed a group at the University of Chicago's Metallurgical Laboratory, which devised the chemical extraction processes used in the production of plutonium for the Manhattan Project. It was in 1942 that he married Helen Griggs, formerly secretary to Prof. E. O. Lawrence. In 1944, Seaborg formulated the actinide concept of heavy element electronic structure, which accurately predicted that the heaviest naturally occurring elements together with the synthetic transuranium elements would form a transition series.

Seaborg Scientist Seaborg, Glenn Theodore Glenn Theodore Seaborg [b. Ishpeming, Michigan, April 19, 1912, d. Layfayette, California, February 25, 1999] In 1940 Seaborg started working with elements with higher atomic numbers than uranium's 92 (transuranic elements). That year he was the second to produce an isotope of neptunium (93) and the first to produce plutonium (94). In 1944 his team added americium (95) and curium (96), followed in 1949 by californium (97) and berkelium (98). Seaborg recognized that thorium, uranium, and transuranic elements through element 103 form the actinides, a series of elements with very similar properties. During World War II, he was associated with the Univ. of Chicago, where he worked on the development of the atomic bomb. After the war, Seaborg was named head of the nuclear chemistry division of the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, later becoming director and then director emeritus of the laboratory. He served as chairman of the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission from 1961 to 1971.

Situated in group VIb of the periodic table , it is expected to have properties similar to those of tungsten The discovery of element 106 took place almost simultaneously in two different laboratories. In June, 1974, a Soviet team led by G. N. Flerov at the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research at Dubna reported bombarding lead-207 and lead-208 atoms with chromium-54 ions to produce an isotope with mass number 259 and a half-life of 7 msec. In Sept., 1974, an American research team led by A. Ghiorso at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory reported bombarding californium-249 atoms with oxygen-18 ions to create an isotope with mass number 263 and a half-life of 0.9 sec. Because their work was independently confirmed first, the Americans suggested the name seaborgium to honor the American chemist Glenn T.

The Life of Glenn T. Seaborg A 1982 Autobiography Reprinted with permission from The Swedish Americans of the Year, Press Forlag, Karlstad, Sweden, 1982, ISBN 91-7400-151-5. Background Nobel prize winner Glenn Seaborg is a many-sided man. He is one of America's great scientific geniuses and one of the world's elite in the realm of the mind. He is entirely of Swedish descent. His mother Selma Erickson came to the United States at the age of seventeen and married H.T. Seaborg, the son of Swedish immigrants. On April 19, 1912 their son Glenn was born. He early began to earn his spending-money and worked his way through college as a stevedore, fruit-packer, laboratory assistant etc. Great honors and awards have come to Dr. Seaborg. Most notable among these are the Nobel prize for chemistry, which he shared in 1951 with his colleague Professor E.M. McMillan, and the Enrico Fermi Award for his outstanding work in nuclear chemistry and leadership in scientific and educational affairs. A good introduction to this man may be found in an article from 1961 explaining his contributions in the field of man-made elements, a subject which seems to be at the core of his endeavors:

Seaborg, Citizen-Scholar By Peggy House It is impossible to overstate the accomplishments of a person who is listed in the Guinness Book of World Records for the longest biography in Who's Who in America. Yet for all the accolades lavished upon Dr.Glenn Seaborg both during his life and since his death on February 25,1999, the legacy for which he will be most remembered at Northern Michigan University is his towering stature as citizen-scholar. Born just a few miles up the road in Ishpeming on April 19, 1912, young Glenn Theodore Seaborg was every bit the normal "Yooper." To a high-school student growing up in such poverty, the dream of a college education seemed remote, indeed. Although his mother hoped he would become a bookkeeper, by the time he reached high school Glenn Seaborg had his sights set on the university to study literature and writing. Calvin Coolidge was in the White House when,at the age of 14, Seaborg began to keep a daily journal, a practice he continued faithfully until his final illness stilled his pen. When asked why he began his diaries in the first place, especially at so young an age, he would look startled and reply, "DoesnÕt everyone?"
