Schweitzer, Albert Schweitzer, photograph by Yousuf Karsh Nobel Prize for Peace for his efforts in behalf of "the Brotherhood of Nations." The eldest son of a Lutheran pastor, Schweitzer studied philosophy and theology at the University of Strasbourg, where he took the doctor's degree in philosophy in 1899. At the same time, he was also a lecturer in philosophy and a preacher at St. Nicholas' Church, and the following year he received a doctorate in theology. His book Von Reimarus zu Wrede The Quest of the Historical Jesus ) established him as a world figure in theological studies. In this and other works he stressed the eschatological views (concerned with the consummation of history) of Jesus and St. Paul, asserting that their attitudes were formed by expectation of the imminent end of the world. During these years Schweitzer also became an accomplished musician, beginning his career as an organist in Strasbourg in 1893. Charles-Marie Widor, his organ teacher in Paris, recognized Schweitzer as a Bach interpreter of unique perception and asked him to write a study of the composer's life and art. The result was (1905). In this work Schweitzer viewed Bach as a religious mystic and likened his music to the impersonal and cosmic forces of the natural world.

Der Besuch der Dorfschule hat ihn nach seinen eigenen Worten vor der Überheblichkeit jener bewahrt, die nur das Gymnasium besuchen und keinen Kontakt zur einfachen Bevölkerung haben. Die Erfahrung, als «Herrenbüble» und «Pfarrerssöhnle» abgestempelt zu sein, machte ihn fürs ganze Leben bereit, jedem Menschen ohne Vorurteile zu begegnen. Vom Umgang des Vaters mit seinen Gemeindegliedern lernte er, mit allen Leuten ins Gespräch zu kommen. Wenn er später so gut Bescheid wusste über Handwerk, Gartenbau und Baumpflege, verdankte er das den Gesprächen mit den Dorfbewohnern, mit denen er lebhafte Beziehungen unterhielt. Die Rückkehr nach Günsbach brachte ihm jedes Mal das beglückende Erlebnis, heimzukommen. Auf dem Friedhof sind die Gräber seiner Eltern. DAS ALBERT-SCHWEITZER-HAUS Dieses Haus hat Albert Schweitzer 1928 mit dem Geld des Goethe-Preises der Stadt Frankfurt gebaut, um sich in dem Dorf, mit dem er seit mehr als 50 Jahren verbunden war, den ruhenden Pol in seinem bewegten Leben zu schaffen.

The son of a Lutheran pastor, Schweitzer was born in Kaysersberg, Upper Alsace, Germany (now Haut-Rhin Department, France). Schweitzer was educated at the universities of Strasbourg, Paris, and Berlin and received three advanced degrees from Strasbourg—a doctorate in philosophy (1899), a licentiate (a higher degree than a doctorate) in theology (1900), and a doctorate in medicine (1913). He was ordained as the curate of the Lutheran Church of Saint Nicholas in Strasbourg in 1900; a year later he became principal of the theological seminary there. In music he gained fame as an organist and authority on organ construction. His best-known musicological work, Johann Sebastian Bach , was published in French in 1905 and rewritten in German in 1908; an English translation appeared in 1911. In this work Schweitzer emphasized the religious nature of Bach’s music and advocated the simple, undistorted style of performing Bach’s works that was accepted afterward as the standard type of presentation.
