Discovery of the Muon-Neutrino, 1988
BNL's next Nobel Prize was awarded in 1988, when a trio of researchers received the physics prize for their 1962 discovery of the muon-neutrino. Leon Lederman, Melvin Schwartz and Jack Steinberger, at the time all of Columbia University, made their discovery at the brand-new Alternating Gradient Synchrotron (AGS). At the time, only the electron-neutrino was known, and the scientists wondered if they could find more types of these ghostlike particles that pass through everything. The AGS, then the most powerful accelerator in the world, was capable of producing the beam needed. Jack Steinberger, Melvin Schwartz and Leon Lederman The experiment used a beam of the AGS's energetic protons to produce a shower of pi mesons, which traveled 70 feet toward a 5,000-ton steel wall made of old battleship plates. On the way, they decayed into muons and neutrinos, but only the latter particles could pass through the wall into a neon-filled detector called a spark chamber. There, the impact of neutrinos on aluminum plates produced muon spark trails that could be detected and photographed proving the existence of muon-neutrinos. The experiment's use of the first-ever neutrino beam paved the way for scientists to use these particles in research at the AGS and around the world.

Marie CURIE, Pierre CURIE, Henri BECQUEREL
For the birth of the neutrino particle, beta radioactivity had to be known. Henri Becquerel, in 1896, did the first experiments on the radioactivity phenomena . Pierre and Marie Curie discovered in 1898 the radium, two millions times more radioactive than the uranium salts used by Becquerel. Those three scientists were at the origin of the fundamental researches on the atomic nucleus undertaken in the following years, which gave us, among others, the discovery of the neutrino, 50 years later. Marie and Pierre Curie in their laboratory
James Chadwick
In 1914, James Chadwick shows that energy spectrum of the beta radioactivity electrons is a continuum. This problem of the continuous beta spectrum will lead 16 years later to the Pauli hypothesis and will make Niels Bohr anxious about the energy conservation principle. In 1932, Chadwick discovers the neutron, the proton's partner in atomic nucleus. With this discovery he participates indirectly to the baptism of "neutrino" by Fermi and receives the pysics Nobel price.
Wolfgang PAULI
The idea of neutrino was born only in 1930, when Wolfgang Pauli tried a desperate saving of the "energy conservation principle". In order to explain the continuous beta spectrum, he invented a new light particle, neutral and interacting very few with the other particles of matter.

See Enumerator's Instructions followed for this census and those from 1850–1990 .
For answers to almost any 1930 census question you can think of, see these National Archives Census Pages. Photocopies of the entire census page may be obtained from the Belleville Public Library for a small fee [link is offsite]. Inquire at your local library for other ways to obtain this census on microfilm, CD-ROM, or through an online subscription. Deciphering the ED and sheet numbers
ED stands for Enumeration District. The numbers below represent the County (St. Clair = 82), the ED number, and then the sheet number. All of these numbers can be found in the upper right hand corner of each census sheet. Technically, a census 'page' equals two sheets, numbered sequentially: 1A, 1B, 2A, 2B, and so on. If sheets are out-of-sequence on the microfilm, we will note it within the transcription. Be aware that the machine-stamped number located in the upper right-hand corner on every-other census sheet was not used for this transcription. Those who use Ancestry.com to locate a page should be aware that the "sheet number" below is not the same as the "page" on the Ancestry site. Generally, you must double the sheet number shown here and it will get you within one online image.
