back overview message from ceo mission statement ... history Mercer Law School Building Getting New Roof
Project should be complete by end of January. From The Macon Telegraph
July 10, 2002
By Gray Beverley, Telegraph Staff Writer
Way above Macon, where a stampede of fluffy clouds seems within reach and the dome of the Bibb County Courthouse looks not much larger than a thimble, a construction crew is giving a makeover to one of the city's most prominent landmarks. If all goes as planned, when done, few people will be able to tell the difference. For the first time since construction began in 1954, the Georgian Colonial structure that now houses Mercer University's Walter F. George School of Law is getting a new roof.
"It's a magnificent building, and they want to see the same thing that was there," said Melvin I. Kruger, chief executive of L.E. Schwartz & Son Inc., which is doing the work for Mercer. Most likely by the end of January, 33,000 square feet of Vermont slate will have a new home; truck loads of new bitumen and metal will get a bird's eye view of downtown; and a weather vane 185 feet above Coleman Hill will have a fresh shine. But the goal is to preserve the original look of the building that first housed an insurance company.

DOE Nobel Laureates The most prestigious scientific awards in the world are the Nobel Prizes for Chemistry, Physics, and Physiology or Medicine. All three of these Nobel Prizes have been presented since 1901, with the Nobel Prizes in Chemistry and Physics awarded annually by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences and the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine awarded by the Nobel Assembly at Karolinska Institutet. (The Nobel Prize web site is accessible at http://nobelprize.org Going back to the earliest days of the Manhattan Project, the Department of Energy and its predecessor agencies have blended cutting-edge research and innovative problem-solving to keep the United States in the forefront of scientific discovery for decades. As testimony to the high quality and impact of the research DOE underwrites, the Department of Energy has sponsored 40 Nobel Laureates since DOE's inception in 1977 - and a total of 80 Nobel Laureates since 1934 (associated with DOE and its predecessor agencies). (These Nobel Prize-winning scientists were recognized for work conducted while they were employed by DOE or predecessor agencies; for work conducted using DOE laboratory facilities; or because a national laboratory or a DOE program office provided long-standing and significant support for their other research efforts.) The complete roster of 80 DOE Nobel Prize winners, their biographies and photos is available at

Class of 1955
50 Year Reunion Survey
July 2005 Dear Fellow Classmates, Our recent Reunion and subsequent emails have suggested there is a great deal of interest in who we are, where we all came from, and what experiences have shaped our lives. With that in mind, Laurie Gregor, Joyce Kovelson, Joyce Myrus, Bob Stern, Jill Waltzer, and myself constructed the following questionnaire (Word document) in order to obtain a picture of the Class of 1955 in 2005. Once the information is tabulated, and some tables produced, I will make the results available, presumably on the Class website. Please complete the survey and return it to me via email or regular mail as soon as possible. Leave blank any questions you do not wish to answer. All responses will be kept absolutely confidential, and material in the tables will be anonymous. If you can fill out a questionnaire for a classmate who is deceased or "disappeared", that would be extremely helpful. A spouse or significant other could also complete the survey for a deceased member of our class. Please feel free to add anything that you think is relevant to the form. I will incorporate the information as best I can. And if you have a CV or Resume that might clarify or expand on some of the questions, I hope you will attach it.

She was raised in Midland, Texas and later graduated from the University of Texas, where she received a Bachelor of Science degree in Special and Elementary Education. She was married to the late David H. Schwartz who practiced as an attorney in the District of Columbia. Together they lived in Washington D.C. for more than 25 years and raised three children. Ms. Schwartz was first elected to public office as a member of the District of Columbia Board of Education in 1974 and served two terms in office. She was then appointed by President Gerald Ford to the National Advisory Council on the Education of Disadvantaged Children in October of 1974. Ms. Schwartz was appointed as the Vice Chairperson of that council beginning in 1977 and continued serving in this capacity until 1979. "The variations of the roofing and metal work made this project unique," Melvin Kruger said. "It was more of a reconstruction than a replacement. Our relationship with Mercer over the years made it very special to be a part of this building's history. It was more than just another project to us. We worked hard to live up to everyoneÕs expectations. Our whole organization was very proud to be a part of it." In the late 1870s, the University's trustees secured one of the nations leading architects, G.P. Randall of Chicago, to design their new administration building. Completed in 1884, the four-story facility was built in Victorian Gothic design, ornamented with three towers, and became a "model of architectural beauty." In 1910 a fire so badly damaged one of the three towers that it had to be rebuilt. Since that time, however, no major renovations to the roof system have taken place. "L.E. Schwartz and Son did a magnificent job with a highly-complex and artistic project," Mercer University President R. Kirby Godsey said. "Because so much of the existing roof was hand-crafted, they had to go back and recreate and recast it by hand as well. We could not be more pleased with the job that was done and are glad to see L.E. Schwartz and Son internationally recognized for their efforts."
