Erwin Schroedinger Austrian physicist with strong philosophical and poetical tendencies; he is best known as the founder of the wave equation of quantum mechanics, which is expressed beautifully as (ih/2 t) = H The equation was presented and developed in a series of papers in Annalen der Physik in 1926. The physicists of Copenhagen did not like Schroedinger's idea; when Schroedinger visited Copenhagen, Bohr kept arguing with him several days, even at Schroedinger's bedside when the latter got ill by catching a cold. Later, in 1935, he presented sharply a basic problem for interpreting quantum mechanics, in terms of "Schroedinger's Cat". The indeterminacy of a micro-state can be amplified by inserting an appropriate physical device, so that we can obtain a "mixed state" so to speak of "live or dead" of a poor cat confined to a box; but of course, when we see the cat, it is either alive or dead. Then what is the state of the cat when we do not open the box and still do not see its state? This became one of the favorite examples for illustrating the problems quantum mechanics poses. [In what state is the cat, when the wave function has not collapsed by observation?]

The story of Schroedinger's cat (an epic poem)
07-May-1982 Dear Cecil: Cecil, you're my final hope
Of finding out the true Straight Dope
For I have been reading of Schroedinger's cat
But none of my cats are at all like that.
This unusual animal (so it is said)
Is simultaneously live and dead!
What I don't understand is just why he
Can't be one or other, unquestionably.
My future now hangs in between eigenstates.
In one I'm enlightened, the other I ain't.
If you understand, Cecil, then show me the way And rescue my psyche from quantum decay. But if this queer thing has perplexed even you, Then I will and won't see you in Schroedinger's zoo. ERWIN SCHROEDINGER, "Hence this life of yours which you are living is not merely a piece of the entire existence, but is, in a certain sense, the WHOLE; only this whole is not so constituted that it can be surveyed in one single glance. This, as we know, is what the Brahmins express in the sacred, mystic formula which is yet so simple and so clear: 'Tat Tvam asi' this is you...And not merely 'someday'; now, today, every day she is bringing you forth, not once, but thousands upon thousands of times, just as every day she engulfs you a thousand times over. For eternally and always there is only now, one and the same now; the present is the only thing that has no end."
Before we make an observation, quantum mechanics tells us that reality is 'unformed'... it exists only as a superposition of probabilities. This truth is popularly known as the "Schrodinger's Cat" paradox. On making an observation, the "

http://www.whatislife.com/reviews/schroedinger.htm
Reviews of books by Erwin Schroedinger ERWIN SCHROEDINGER (1887-1961) received the Nobel Prize in physics for his discovery of new productive forms of atomic theory. In 1935 Schroedinger published "The present situation in quantum mechanics" where he made the following thought experiment. A cat in a closed box is either alive or dead according to whether a quantum event occurred. The paradox is that both the dead and living cat coexist. They coexist seemingly in parallel until an observer opens the box and looks at the cat, i.e., performs an experiment and forces the quantum system into a classical state, where only one or the other state exists, unlike the strange coexistence of two quantum states.
What is Life
with Mind and Matter and Autobiographical Sketches
by Erwin Schroedinger
Cambridge University Press; 1996, 1967, 1944 Erwin Schroedinger's essay 'What is Life' presents a physicist's view of the molecular world of living organisms. Written in 1944, it explained why the physics of his time was inadequate to give a complete description of the molecular mechanism of life. It is the realization of what can be summarize as the Large and the Small. Schroedinger, who made a major contribution to quantum mechanics, realized that there is no physics known that can bridge the laws of the very small and the laws of the very large (to which life belongs while making extensive use of the very small). This physics is still not elaborated or discovered (see also Roger Penrose ) and represents the incompatibility between gravitational mechanics and quantum mechanics.

Erwin Rudolf Josef Alexander Schroedinger, Nobel Laureate
Schrodinger invented wave mechanics as an alternative to Heisenberg's matrix mechanics, and was able to find the energy-levels of hydrogen, and also their multiplicity. This result had been achieved by Pauli a few months earlier, by using Heisenberg's formulation. It is often said that Schroedinger showed that his theory was equivalent to matrix mechanics; however, what he really showed was that is a separable Hilbert space, and that his theory is a special case of Heisenberg's. The full equivalence only follows from the Stone- von Neumann theorem, which says that the Heisenberg commutation relations, in the form posed by Weyl , has a unique irreducible representation. • In 1926 he published the “Schroedinger Wave Equation” applied to the H atom.
  • Bohr orbits became resonances standing electron waves this explained all the Bohr model explained and much more.
