The National Medal of Science was created by statute to recognize individuals who have made outstanding contributions to science and engineering. Dr. Schrieffer holds the Eminent Scholar Chair with the State of Florida University System. He is a Professor of Physics at Florida State University and the University of Florida. He also serves as the Chief Scientist for the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory. Dr. Schrieffer won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1972 with two other scientists for their study for the microscopic theory of superconductivity. Dr. Schrieffer was awarded the National Medal of Science in 1984. Dr. Schrieffer holds a B.S. from Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a Ph.D. from the University of Illinois.

Faculty Listing View of the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory The National High Magnetic Field Laboratory (NHMFL) was awarded through peer-reviewed competition to Florida State University in August 1990. The laboratory is operated by a multi-institutional consortium comprising Florida State University, the University of Florida, and Los Alamos National Laboratory. It is funded by the National Science Foundation and the State of Florida. The NHMFL has strong ties with the FSU physics department. It supports physics graduate students who wish to pursue research in areas of condensed matter of interest to the lab. Several professors of the physics department are associated with the NHMFL (see list below). The NHMFL is one of the country's newest national facilities dedicated to all qualified users from other academic institutions, national laboratories, and industry.
