A SHADOW self, a second skin, a reflection staring back from another world, those are my impressions when I think about the Other. So it was with interest that I read Tamara Kaye Sellman’s “Practical Magic,” an essay published spring, 2004, in Margin . Broadly defining the Other as anyone outside ourselves, Sellman added a quote by Dr. Mary Klages, who identified the Other as “non-white, non-male, non-heterosexual, non-hygienic, non-rational.” Sellman’s essay, a meditation on magic realism and the Other, got me thinking about this juxtaposition and dovetailed with my reading of José Saramago, and how he fuses these entities, particularly in three of his novels. The Other has been a subject of enduring interest going back, as far as I can recall, to the seventies and the popular novel by Thomas Tryon of the same name, where a brother is possessed by the spirit of his dead twin. Around this same time, I read Steppenwolf and recall a quote toward its end. “The mistaken and unhappy notion that a man is an enduring unity is known to you,” Harry Haller is told. “It is also known to you that man consists of a multitude of souls, of numerous selves.”

Blindness
Genre Novel (294 pp.) Keywords Abandonment Blindness Caregivers Catastrophe ... Survival Summary A sudden epidemic of blindness spreads throughout an unidentified country. When those who have lost their sight are examined, however, no evidence of pathology or damage can be found. The afflicted all describe "seeing" not darkness but rather a dense, impenetrable whiteness. Because the government believes the disease is contagious, those people initially affected are quickly quarantined in a former mental hospital that is guarded by soldiers. There, the blind are treated like lepers and live like animals. Enigmatically, the wife of a sightless ophthalmologist has been spared from going blind. She functions as both protector and caregiver of a small group of blind people. They escape their imprisonment only when their captors (and presumably everyone except the ophthalmologist's wife) lose their sight. Life is reduced to a constant search for food. As the situation grows even more grisly, vision is not only abruptly restored but perhaps with a clarity greater than ever before. When crowds of people rejoice "I can see," the reader wonders whether their earlier loss of sight was genuine or maybe some form of psychic blindness or spiritual malaise.

(also quoted in the epigraphs), but, with their meditations on mortality, they also strongly suggest the rovings of James Joyce's Leopold Bloom, in another rainswept port capital on the periphery of Europe. Another ghost stalking Saramago's prose is that of an Argentinian of Portuguese descent, Jorge Luis Borges. Ricardo Reis arrives in Lisbon on a ship that began its voyage in Buenos Aires (p. 351), and throughout the novel is trying, in vain, to finish reading a book in English called The God of the Labyrinth , by the Irish writer Herbert Quain (p. 363), which he borrowed from the vessel's library and failed to return. Both book and writer are imaginary, but they have a previous existence in the pages of Borges, who wrote a pastiche 'critical essay' on the 'work of Herbert Quain' including

Globalisation and Particularism the Symbolism of the Shopping-Mall in A Caverna Christopher Rollason, Ph.D. Metz, France rollason@9online.fr This paper was given at the conference "Globalization and Nationalisms: Second International Conference on Postcolonial Studies" (University of Vigo, Galicia, Spain, 24-26 October 2001). It was published in: Global Neo-Imperialism and National Resistance: Approaches from Postcolonial Studies A Caverna The Cave ] appeared near-simultaneously in Portuguese and Spanish, in November 2000 and January 2001 respectively. The end of 2000 saw Saramago immersed in a 45-day tour over three continents , in a planet-embracing promotion of a book whose symbolism decries the standardising and homogenising impact of global mass culture, as embodied in the shopping-mall. This novel's history so far points, in its very materiality, to a tangled intertwining of global and anti-global which in some respects typifies the radical criticism of culture in the early twenty-first century. The veteran historian Eric Hobsbawm has defined globalisation as a phenomenon having three main aspects - technical ("the abolition of space and time"), economic ("the abolition of trade barriers and liberalisation of markets"), and cultural ("the trend towards homogenisation")
