Portugal's Jose Saramago wins Nobel Literature Prize
October 8, 1998
Web posted at: 8:28 a.m. EDT (1228 GMT)
In this story:
STOCKHOLM, Sweden (CNN) Outspoken Portuguese novelist Jose Saramago on Thursday was named the winner of the 1998 Nobel Literature Prize. He is the first writer in Portuguese to receive the world's most prized literary award, which is worth $950,000 and will be presented at a ceremony in Stockholm on December 9. In its citation, the Swedish Academy said it gave the award to Saramago for work that "with parables sustained by imagination, compassion and irony continually enables us to apprehend an illusory reality." The works of the 75-year-old writer, who mixes magical realism with hard-edged political comment, have been translated into 25 languages and he is indisputably Portugal's best-known literary figure.

An 'exhilarating novel'
'Blindness'
By Jose Saramago
Web posted on: Thursday, October 08, 1998 3:16:21 PMEDT (CNN) A parable of loss and disorientation, of man's worst appetities and hopeless weaknesses, "Blindness", said its publisher, "is one of the most challenging, thought-provoking, and ultimately exhilarating novels published in any language in recent years." Author Jose Saramago received the 1998 Nobel Prize for Literature.
Chapter One The amber light came on. Two of the cars ahead accelerated before the red light appeared. At the pedestrian crossing the sign of a green man lit up. The people who were waiting began to cross the road, stepping on the white stripes painted on the black surface of the asphalt, there is nothing less like a zebra, however, that is what it is called. The motorists kept an impatient foot on the clutch, leaving their cars at the ready, advancing, retreating like nervous horses that can sense the whiplash about to be inflicted. The pedestrians have just finished crossing but the sign allowing the cars to go will be delayed for some seconds, some people maintain that this delay, while apparently so insignificant, has only to be multiplied by the thousands of traffic lights that exist in the city and by the successive changes of their three colours to produce one of the most serious causes of traffic jams or bottlenecks, to use the more current term.

FOLLOW UP DISCUSSION WITH LJ LINDHURST
LJ Lindhurst is a former Webster University student and while doing some on-line research on Jose Saramago came across my comments on some of his books. J.L. had done a couple of courses with me while at Webster and she wrote. We've had some delightful discussions of Saramago and literature in general. I've excerpted from our correspondence some comments on THE YEAR OF THE DEATH OF RICARDO REIS and posted them below. May 2001 From LJ Lindhurst ljl@w-rabbit.com I have been DEVOURING the books of Jose Saramago. In fact, I have been so obsessed with this writer that I have planned a trip to Portugal next month so I can see Mafra, Lisbon, etc. (I am particularly looking forward to seeing that statue of Adamastor) I feel the same way that you do about him; it's not necessarily the plot of the books, it's his prose. It just grabs me in the inexplicable way. It just flows on and on, and it's like music playing in my head. I have rarely been so stunned and inspired by a writer or artist. [Corbett comments: I had been unaware that Fernando Pessoa was a real poet and that Ricardo Reis was his creation.]

Comments by Bob Corbett
May 27, 1999 I was captivated by this dreamy fantasy, told in the frame of a children's story (modeled on something like the "Gingerbread Man" where character leads to character and so on), and yet it stirred deep and significant philosophical reflections for me. What a marvelous book. It was my first read of a Saramago novel. It won't be my last. A brief summary, which you may want to skip if you plan to read the book (just a brief paragraph about the plot): It is contemporary time and in an astonishing occurrence the entire Iberian peninsula breaks away from the European continent and sails off into the Atlantic. We are introduced to 5 human characters and a dog, all who are central. Four of the humans have had odd experiences connected with the logic of the break up of the peninsula, a logic which is completely contrary to what we know as the laws of nature or the laws of science. The story is then two-fold the story of the peninsula which is a tale that follows a logic and set of laws that are not what we humans call natural, and the story of the inter-relationships of the five people and the dog. The fantasy is utterly gripping. But for me the greatest reward of the book is the subtle philosophical underpinning, a complete skepticism about our notions of nature and natural laws. On Saramago's view we make up these laws on the basis of our limited and approved sets of experiences experiences that fit the laws. Yet the world may well operate and be operating according to different rules, whose logic we cannot perceive, or perhaps, by no logic at all.
