Prof. Dr. Abdus Salam January 29 November 21 ) received the Nobel Prize in Physics in for his work in electroweak theory Sheldon Glashow , and Steven Weinberg arrived at the theory independently and shared the prize. The validity of the theory was ascertained in the following years through experiments carried out at the Super Proton Synchrotron facility at CERN in Geneva , particularly the discovery of the W and Z bosons Director of the International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP), Trieste , Italy, from 1964 to December 1993, Salam died in Oxford in 1996, after a long illness. He was buried in Pakistan where he was born. Although he belonged to the Ahmadiyya In the early 1970s, Abdus Salam played a role in starting Pakistan 's nuclear weapons program.

Abdus Salam (1926-1996) worked together with Stephen Weinberg to present their joint "Weinberg - Salam Theory "which is the mathematical and conceptual synthesis of electromagnetic and weak interactions. The pair, together with Sheldon Glashow, were awarded the 1979 Nobel Prize for Physics. Salam's contribution to physics also extended across many other fields, including quantum mechanics.
Salam remained actively engaged
in researching elementary particle physics right until his death
Salam graduated from Punjab University in 1946 and received his doctorate from Cambridge University in 1952 for his research into quantum electrodynamics. He taught at Cambridge then moved to the Imperial College in London where we was a lecturer in theoretical physics.
Salam contributed to the foundation of the International Center for Theoretical Physics (a UNESCO organization that is also a branch of the International Atomic Energy Agency) and he served as director of the center from 1964. Salam also served on the U.N. conference for the peaceful use of atomic energy, while remaining at the forefront of elementary particle physics research, especially with his support of the Super String Theory.

Abdus Salam, 1984 (b. Jan. 29, 1926, Jhang Maghi a na, Punjab, India [now in Pakistan]d. Nov. 21, 1996, Oxford, Eng.), Pakistani nuclear physicist who was the corecipient with Steven Weinberg and Sheldon Lee Glashow of the 1979 Nobel Prize for Physics for their work in formulating the electroweak theory , which explains the unity of the weak nuclear force and electromagnetism. Salam attended the Government College at Lahore, and in 1952 he received his Ph.D. in theoretical physics from the University of Cambridge. He returned to Pakistan as a professor of mathematics in 1951-54 and then went back to Cambridge as a lecturer in mathematics. He became professor of theoretical physics at the Imperial College of Science and Technology, London, in 1957. Salam was the first Pakistani and the first Muslim scientist to win a Nobel Prize. In 1964 he helped found the International Centre for Theoretical Physics at Trieste, Italy, in order to provide support for physicists from Third World countries. He served as the centre's director until his death.

Like all scientific institutions, ICTP runs services providing for the record and dissemination of the knowledge created or updated within its walls or transferred by means of its high-level training programmes. A special and unique feature of the Centre is its belonging to the family of the United Nations, which implies particular attention to the needs of emerging countries. In more than forty years, the publications and printing services have evolved from a nearly craftsmanship set-up to one using up-to-date technology. From their debut, great importance was assigned to these services since their product (preprints, reports, lecture notes and preprint registries) was nearly the only connection of many scientific institutions in the developing countries and in Eastern Europe with the advances of physics and mathematics achieved in the industrialized world. Publications
The office handles scientific research results obtained by resident scientific staff and by scientific visitors (associate members, staff associates and others), which are published as preprints or reports. Some 10,000 articles in various fields have been published since 1964. All these preprints may now be consulted on-line.

Since unpublished material presented at the meetings might prove of great interest also to scientists who did not take part in the schools, the Centre has made them available through a new publication titled ICTP Lecture Note Series. It is hoped that this formally structured pedagogical material in advanced topics will be helpful to young students and researchers, in particular to those working under less favourable conditions.

Large View Salam, Abdus (1925-1952) martyr of the language movement . Abdus Salam was born in the village of Luxmipur under Feni district in 1925. Deprived of the opportunity to receive a good education, he used to serve as a peon in the Department of Industries of the government, and had his living quarters at 36B Nilkhet Barrack in Dhaka. On 21 February 1952, students and common people defied official ban on assemblage of people imposed under Section 144, and staged a demonstration in front of Dhaka Medical College Hostel demanding recognition of Bangla as one of the state languages of Pakistan. Abdus Salam took part in the demonstration and was shot when the police fired on the crowd. He received treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital for over a month but passed away on 7 April 1952. He was awarded the Ekushey Padak posthumously in February 2000. [Dilruba Begum]

Salam, Abdus (1910-1970) journalist, first editor of the bangladesh observer , an English daily named before the independence of the country as the Pakistan Observer . Abdus Salam was born in 1910 in Dakkhin Dharmapur village of chhagalnaiya thana of Feni district. He passed matriculation from Feni High School in 1926 and Intermediate of Arts from Chittagong College in 1928. He obtained BA Honours and MA in English Literature from Calcutta Presidency College in 1931 and 1932 respectively. Abdus Salam started his career as an English teacher in Feni College and soon he left the job to join government service, first in the income tax department and then in the office of civil supplies and later, in the audit and accounts department. In 1949, he left government service and took a job in the editorial desk of the Pakistan Observer and in the same year, he became the editor of the daily. The government of Pakistan banned the daily and arrested Abdus Salam in February 1952 on the allegation that the daily had published an editorial subversive to the state. Salam contested successfully in the 1954 elections as a united front candidate from the Feni North constituency. The United Front government withdrew the ban on the

http://www.cartage.org.lb/en/themes/Biographies/MainBiographies/S/Salam/1.html
Salam, Abdus Pakistani physicist who proposed a theory linking the electromagnetic and weak nuclear forces. In 1979 he became the first person from his country to receive a Nobel prize.
Salam shared the Nobel prize with US physicists Sheldon Glashow and Steven Weinberg for unifying the theories of electromagnetism and the weak force, the force responsible for a neutron transforming into a proton, an electron, and a neutrino during radioactive decay. Building on Glashow's work, Salam and Weinberg independently arrived at the same theory 1967.
Salam was born in Jhang near Faisalabad, in what was then part of British India. He attended Government College in Lahore before going to Cambridge University in England. From 1957 he was professor at Imperial College, London, and he was chief scientific adviser to the president of Pakistan 1961-74. Salam was also instrumental in setting up the International Centre for Theoretical Physics in Trieste, Italy, to stimulate science and technology in developing countries.
The theory actually involves two new particles (the W0 and B0), which combine in different ways to form either the photon or the Z0. This was verified experimentally at CERN, the European particle-physics laboratory near Geneva, in 1973, though the W and Z particles were not detected until 1983. Weinberg and Salam also predicted that the electroweak interaction should violate left-right symmetry and this was confirmed by experiments at Stanford University in California.
