Anwar al-Sadat met Gamal Abdel Nasser while in a British military school in colonial Egypt in the late 1930s. He joined Nasser for the revolution that fought colonialism and overthrew the monarchy in 1952, eventually succeeding Nasser as president in 1970. In an effort to regain control of losses from the 1967 Six Day War, in 1973 Sadat ordered an attack on Israeli forces and was successful enough to make both sides think about peace. Plagued by domestic economic problems, Sadat made overt gestures of peace to Israel and wooed U.S. president Jimmy Carter into assisting with negotiations. The resulting peace agreement, the Camp David Accords, earned Sadat the 1978 Nobel Prize for Peace (he shared it with Israeli Prime Minister

is more p r e c i o u s than a piece of l a n d ~ Anwar Sadat On this date in 1970, Mohamed Anwar El Sadat (1918-1981) was elected President of the Arab Republic of Egypt. Sadat was born in the Nile delta village of Mi Abu al Kawm to a family of 13 children He and Prime Minister of Israel Menachem Begin negotiated the historic Camp David Accords with President Jimmy Carter . Both Begin and Sadat shared the 1978 Nobel Peace Prize Sadat courageously gambled everything for peace and called his dedication to Middle East peace his "sacred mission." "He who cannot change the very fabric of his thought will never be able to change reality, and will never, therefore, make any progress," Sadat explained. With Sadat's statesmanship, Egypt became the first Arab state to recognize Israel's right to exist. "There can be hope only for a society which acts as one big family, not as many separate ones," he said. There is an old Arabic Proverb that says, "Trust in Allah, but tie your camel." In embracing Israel, Sadat outraged the Arab world. At a Cairo military parade in, while looking up at air force jets overhead, he was assassinated by Islamic fundamentalists within his own army. In 1999, former President

His first novel was published in 1939 and ten more were written before the Egyptian Revolution of July 1952, when he stopped writing for several years. One novel was republished in 1953, however, and the appearance of the Cairo Triology, Bayn al Qasrayn, Qasr al Shawq, Sukkariya (Between-the-Palaces, Palace of Longing, Sugarhouse) in 1957 made him famous throughout the Arab world as a depictor of traditional urban life. With The Children of Gebelawi (1959), he began writing again, in a new vein that frequently concealed political judgements under allegory and symbolism. Works of this second period include the novels, The Thief and the Dogs (1961), Autumn Quail (1962), Small Talk on the Nile (1966), and Miramar (1967), as well as several collections of short stories.

Dear Mr. President:
I have the honor to inform you that during two weeks after my return home I will submit a motion before Israel's Parliament (the Knesset) to decide on the following question:
If during the negotiations to conclude a peace treaty between Israel and Egypt all outstanding issues are agreed upon, "are you in favor of the removal of the Israeli settlers from the northern and southern Sinai areas or are you in favor of keeping the aforementioned settlers in those areas?"
The vote, Mr. President, on this issue will be completely free from the usual Parliamentary Party discipline to the effect that although the coalition is being now supported by 70 members out of 120, every member of the Knesset, as I believe, both of the Government and the Opposition benches will be enabled to vote in accordance with his own conscience.
Sincerely yours

He launched a surprise attack on Israel in 1973, then became the first Arab leader to sign a peace treaty with Israel. He shifted from Soviet to American patronage and relaxed Egypt's internal economic and political system. Mohamed Anwar El-Sadat was born in 1918. His village, Mit Abul Kom, is about 40 miles north of Cairo in the Nile delta. Sadat lived with his grandmother while his father, a minor civil service clerk, was away in the Sudan with his Sudanese wife. The boy attended a village Quran (Moslem) school, then went briefly to a Coptic (Christian) school. His parents returned to Egypt in 1925, and Sadat went to live with them in Cairo. In later years he relished visits to his village and spoke nostalgically of his humble rural origins. Sadat's father struggled to support 13 children on his modest salary. October 1981 Assassination of President Sadat The attack on President Sadat took place shortly before 1 p.m. local time on Oct. 6 during the military parade held annually to mark the opening of the Egyptian offensive in the 1973 Arab-Israeli war. As Egyptian Air Force jets were flying over the parade ground, a lorry in the ground procession stopped in front to of the presidential rostrum, apparently because of mechanical failure. Armed men then emerged from the lorry and approached the rostrum, throwing grenades and firing with automatic weapons. The President was hit almost immediately and seven others were injured, some seriously. It was subsequently established by the Egyptian authorities that four men had mounted the attack, all of whom were arrested. Keesings Worldwide Online
