Cambridge, England, October 14, 1984] Radio astronomy was still a brand new science in 1946 when Ryle began surveying the radio universe. By 1959 he had prepared a catalog of some 500 radio sources, which he expanded to about 5000 sources by 1965. He was a pioneer in using two radio telescopes and interferometry to improve resolution. From 1972 through 1974 he was also England's Astronomer Royal. Wikipedia Martin Ryle Sir Martin Ryle September 27 October 14 ) was a British radio astronomer who developed revolutionary radio telescope systems (see e.g. aperture synthesis ) and used them for accurate location and imaging of weak radio sources. In Ryle and Vonberg were the first people to publish interferometric astronomical measurements at radio wavelengths, although it is claimed that Joseph Pawsey from the University of Sydney had actually made interferometric measurements earlier in the same year. With improved equipment, Ryle observed the most distant known galaxies in the universe at that time. He was the first Professor of

Ryle, Sir Martin
English radioastronomer. At the Mullard Radio Astronomy Observatory, Cambridge, he developed the technique of sky-mapping using 'aperture synthesis', combining smaller dish aerials to give the characteristics of one large one. His work on the distribution of radio sources in the universe brought confirmation of the Big Bang theory. He won, with his co-worker Antony Hewish, the Nobel Prize for Physics 1974.
Ryle was born in Brighton, Sussex, and studied at Oxford. During World War II he was involved in the development of radar. After the war he joined the Cavendish Laboratory in Cambridge, and in 1959 he became the first Cambridge professor of radioastronomy, responsible for most of the radiotelescope developments. He was Astronomer Royal 1972-82.
Larger and larger radio telescopes were built at the Cambridge sites, resulting in the Cambridge Catalogue Surveys, numbered 1C-5C, giving better and better maps of radio sources in the northern sky. The 3C survey, published 1959, is used as reference by all radioastronomers. The 4C survey catalogued 5,000 sources.
The first 'supersynthesis' telescope, in which a fixed aerial maps a band of the sky using solely the rotation of the Earth, and another aerial maps successive rings out from it concentrically, was built in 1963, and a 5-km/3-mi instrument was completed in 1971. The programmes for which it is in use includes the mapping of extragalactic sources and the study of supernovae and newly born stars. It can provide as sharp a picture as the best ground-based optical telescopes.

CHARITY REGISTRATION NO. 327946 The Martin Ryle Trust is a Registered Charity whose object is to fund scientific research and education on any aspects of reducing violence between states. This covers a wide range of problems in the natural and the social sciences. SIR MARTIN RYLE (1918-1984), FRS, Astronomer Royal, Nobel Laureate, was a
physicist and radio astronomer, who also possessed an exceptional talent for engineering. During the Second World War he played an important part in the development and use of radar, working mainly on countermeasures. Like many scientists involved in that war, he subsequently turned with relief to academic research. Building on his radar experience, he became a pioneer in the development of radio astronomy. His most important innovation was the invention and development of aperture synthesis, whereby a few small moveable radio antennae simulate an enormous radio telescope. From the mid-70s his concerns about the nuclear arms race and the misuse of
science came to the fore. “Towards the Nuclear Holocaust” was published by the Menard Press in 1981. It combines factual information, analysis of the social and political condition of the world and a passionate call for rectification of "this incredible situation". Ryle considered that nuclear power was irredeemably connected with nuclear weapons, via the production of plutonium. He used his engineering skill to analyse, develop and promote wind power. He became increasingly concerned with the moral dilemmas that scientists ought to face up to “… we should strive to see how the vast resources now diverted towards the destruction of life are turned instead to the solution of the problems which both rich - but especially the poor - countries of the world now face.”
