Nobel Prize Winning Chemists Leopold Ruzicka The Nobel Prize for Chemistry 1939 Leopold Stephen Ruzicka was born on September 3, 1887, in Vukovar. His father, Stjepan Ruzicka, was a cooper; his mother's maiden name was Ljubica Sever. After the early death of his father in 1891, he returned with his mother to her birthplace, Osijek, on the Drava somewhat west of its junction with the Danube. There he attended the primary school and the classical gymnasium where the Croatian language was used. He wanted to study at the Zurich Polytechnic Institute but found to his dismay that an entrance examination was required not only in chemistry but also in "descriptive geometry". He chose the Technische Hochshule at Karlsrohe, where he began his chemical studies in 1906. After two years of research work Ruzicka was a "Dipl. Ing", and two weeks later "Dr. Ing". Professor Staudinger appointed him as his assistant, and they together entered the quite unexplored field of the active constituents-named by them pyrethrins-of Dalmatian insect powder, a plant product, toxic to insects and other cold-blooded animals. They thus opened a new chapter of alicyclic chemistry, which was then as unfamiliar to Ruzicka as it was to Staudinger. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1939 "for his work on polymethylenes and higher terpenes".

Holdings The Archive of the ETH Zurich holds a collection of Ruzicka's own scientific works. Part of the collection is covered by a directory that can be borrowed (a larger body of works, acquired subsequently, has not yet been cataloged). There is also a comprehensive biographical file. The Old Prints collection contains some of Ruzicka's earlier works. Several works can also be borrowed from the open shelf library. The Picture Archive has a variety of portraits of Ruzicka. He studied musicology with Adler and Lach at the Vienna University, where he later taught from 1932 to 1973. He succeeded Robert Haas as music director of the music collection of the Austrian national library, in 1946, and is credited with helping preserve documents about Bruckner. The Nobel Prize The Nobel Prizes are the most prestigious awards given for intellectual achievement in the world. They are recognized by virtually every scientist, and they are also among the few prizes known by name to many ordinary citizens. A remarkable number of these coveted prizes have been awarded to people of Hungarian background... The "Brain Drain" is particularly evident here as most of these winners received this distinction as nationals of other countries. Visit the Official Nobel Web Site for a complete listing of Nobel Laureates or visit a Hungarian-language site, A Nobel-díj és a magyar Nobel-díjasok . The unofficial Nobel Prize Internet Archive is also an excellent resource. That's 18 Nobel Prizes! Can you help support our work? Please CLICK IMAGE TO DONATE!

    Barton Derek Harold Richard (1918 - 1998)
Britský chemik narozený 8.záøí 1918. V roce 1940 vstoupil na Londýnskou univerzitu, v následujících letech pracoval jako chemik na mnoha národních projektech.
V roce 1950 píše ve spolupráci s Oddem Hasselem práci „The Conformation of the Steroid Nucleus“, kde naèrtává strukturu organických látek a hloubìji se vìnuje steroidùm, pokládá tak základ k pochopení enzymatické èinnosti. Byl zván na speciální pøednášky do univerzit po celém svìtì. V roce 1969 se stal prezidentem Britské asociace pro pokrok ve vìdì. Bìhem života získal mnoho cen a ocenìní za svou vìdeckou práci. Nejvýznamnìjší z nich je Nobelova cena za výzkum v oblasti stereometrie, kterou získal roku 1969 spolu s Oddem Hasselem. Do organické chemie zavedl pojem konformace a rozpracoval dynamickou stereometrii.
Roku 1998 umírá jako Sir Derek Harold.
    Buchner Eduard (1860-1917)
Pozdìji studoval pod dohledem svého bratra Hanse (pozdìji velmi známý bakteriolog) a zde poprvé publikuje roku 1885 svou práci „The influence of oxygen on fermentations“. Po absolvování speciálních soukromých studií se vrátil zpìt na školu, kde získal roku 1888 doktorát a od roku 1891 byl univerzitním lektorem.
