Ruzicka, Leopold,
Adolf Butenandt of Germany, of the 1939 Nobel Prize for Chemistry for his work on ringed molecules, terpenes (a class of hydrocarbons found in the essential oils of many plants), and sex hormones. Ruzicka's investigations of natural odoriferous compounds, begun in 1916, culminated in the discovery that the molecules of muskone and civetone, important to the perfume industry, contain rings of 15 and 17 carbon atoms, respectively. Before this discovery, rings with more than eight atoms had been unknown and indeed had been believed to be too unstable to exist. Ruzicka's discovery greatly expanded research on these compounds. He also showed that the carbon skeletons of terpenes and many other large organic molecules are constructed from multiple units of isoprene. In the mid-1930s Ruzicka discovered the molecular structure of several male sex hormones, notably testosterone and androsterone, and subsequently synthesized them.

Ruzicka studied chemistry at the Technical University of Karlsruhe (Germany), where he received his doctorate under H. Staudinger (1910). After a professorship in Utrecht (The Netherlands) (1927-1929) he became professor of chemistry at the Swiss Federal Institut for Technology (ETH). His main work started in 1921. It involved: macrocyclic compounds, higher terpenes and steroids. He shared the Nobel Prize with Butenandt in 1939. His "biogenetic isoprene rule", which was pioneered by Wallach, became, in 1953, the crowning of his life. Links www.nobel.se/chemistry/laureates/1939/index.html

Ružička was born in Vukovar (at the time part of Austria-Hungary ). His family of craftsmen and farmers was of Czech German and Croatian origin. Ružička attended the classics-program secondary school in Osijek . He changed his original idea of becoming a priest and switched to studying technical disciplines. Chemistry was his choice, probably because he hoped to get a position at the newly opened sugar refinery built in Osijek. Due to the excessive hardship of everyday and political life, he left and chose the High Technical School in Karlsruhe in Germany .
