Rowland, F. Sherwood
I was born on June 28, 1927, the second of three sons, in the small central Ohio town of Delaware, the home of Ohio Wesleyan University. My father and mother had moved there the previous year when he took the position of Professor of Mathematics and Chairman of the Department at Ohio Wesleyan. All of my elementary and high school education was received in the Delaware public schools from an excellent set of teachers. The Delaware school system then believed in accelerated promotion, so that I entered first grade at age 5 and skipped the fourth grade entirely, with the result that I entered high school at 12 and graduated a few weeks before my sixteenth birthday. The college preparatory curriculum was strong on Latin, English, History, Science and Mathematics. The academic side of high school was easy for me, and I enjoyed it. In several summers of my early teens, the high school science teacher entrusted to me during his two week vacations the operation of the local volunteer weather station, an auxiliary part of the U.S. weather service-maximum and minimum temperatures and total precipitation. This was my first exposure to systematic experimentation and data collection. Our home was filled with books, and all of us were avid readers. My reading at that time ran toward naval history, which was complemented with realistic scale-models and simulated naval battles using an elaborate mathematical system for rating each warship and the effects of combat on them.

Nobel Laureate F. Sherwood Rowland to Speak at UNC Asheville
Dr. F. Sherwood Rowland Nobel Laureate F. Sherwood Rowland will be the featured speaker at UNC Asheville’s seventh annual S. Dexter Squibb Distinguished Lecture Series September 9-10. Rowland, an American chemist, shared the 1995 Nobel Prize for Chemistry for research on the depletion of the Earth’s ozone layer. The Nobel Laureate’s two public talks will focus on the Earth’s atmosphere. Events are free and open to the public. Rowland will discuss "Our Changing Atmosphere: Stratospheric Ozone Depletion and Global Warming" at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 9, in UNC Asheville’s Lipinksy Auditorium. This keynote talk will focus on several important alterations in the chemical composition of Earth’s atmosphere and how these changes are likely to cause significant further changes in the coming decades. Rowland will explain how the world’s population is affecting ozone depletion and global warming by releasing gases into the atmosphere. Rowland will examine "Hydrocarbons in Earth’s Atmosphere" at 8 a.m. Friday, Sept. 10, in UNC Asheville’s Lipinsky Auditorium. During the presentation, Rowland will discuss his research on the hydrocarbon composition of cities around the world and its role in the creation of urban ozone.

"Our Changing Atmosphere: Stratospheric Ozone Depletion and Global Warming"
As the 21 st Century begins, several important alterations in the chemical composition of Earth's atmosphere are well under way, and are likely to cause significant further changes in the forthcoming decades. Many of these can be grouped under three headings: depletion of stratospheric ozone, increased trapping of terrestrial infrared radiation with consequent warming of Earth's surface, and rising levels of surface pollution especially in urban environments. In all three instances, the major changes are occurring because of additional gases released to the atmosphere through the activities of the global population. Trace gas measurements : Improvements in the sensitivity of detection techniques, especially in the latter third of the 20

Scientist Honored for Role in Landmark Discovery of CFC Damage to Ozone Layer
Permission is hereby granted to journalists to use this material so long as credit is given, and to teachers to use this material in classrooms. F. Sherwood Rowland, along with colleagues Paul Crutzen and Mario Molina, was awarded the Nobel prize last November for discovering the threat chlorofluorocarbons pose to the ozone layer, for working to preserve the ozone layer, and for protecting human welfare. In May 1995 AGU awarded one of its highest honors, the Roger Revelle medal, to Rowland for his role in this work. The following remarks are excerpted from a speech by Richard P. Turco of the University of California, Los Angeles, who presented the AGU award. Sherwood (Sherry) Rowland is perhaps the ideal candidate for the Revelle Medal of the American Geophysical Union. I can think of no one in the field of atmospheric sciences better suited to receive this high honor, named for an intrepid crusader on behalf of the environment, the late Roger Revelle. I have known Sherry since 1975, which was soon after the publication of his landmark paper with Mario Molina on the depletion of stratospheric ozone by chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs). That brilliant piece of deductive science stands as the major triumph of the physical sciences in building a case for acting to preserve the global environment. It is the only theory of "global change" that has been universally accepted, and it now stands as a shining paradigm for international responsibility to safeguard the environment.
