The Rous Sarcoma Virus (RSV)
In 1911, Peyton Rous discovered that cancer could be induced in healthy chickens by injecting them with a cell-free extract of the tumor of a sick chicken. He ground up samples of the tumor and passed the material through a filter with pores so fine that not even bacteria could get through. However, the tumor filtrate was able to induce cancer when injected into chickens. This was the first demonstration of an oncogenic virus sarcoma , a tumor of connective tissue . The virus was named the Rous sarcoma virus (RSV). The Rous sarcoma virus is a retrovirus (as is HIV , the virus that causes AIDS Link to Retroviruses Link to AIDS The genes of retroviruses are encoded in RNA, not DNA. However, the virus contains a reverse transcriptase , a DNA polymerase that uses RNA as its template. As soon as RSV infects a cell, its reverse transcriptase synthesizes DNA copies of its genome. These enter the nucleus of the cell and insert themselves randomly throughout the DNA of the host's chromosomes. Normal gene transcription within the nucleus now produces an RSV messenger RNA (mRNA) that reenters the cytoplasm. Some copies of this mRNA are then

Francis Peyton Rous
Francis Peyton Rous October 5 Baltimore February 16 New York City ) was an American pathologist whose discovery of cancer-inducing viruses earned him a share of the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine in 1966. Rous was educated at Johns Hopkins University and at the University of Michigan . He joined the Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research (now Rockefeller University ) in New York City in and remained there throughout his career. In Rous found that sarcomas in hens could be transmitted to fowl of the same inbred stock not only by grafting tumour cells but also by injecting a submicroscopic agent extractable from them; this discovery gave rise to the virus theory of cancer causation. Although his research was derided at the time, subsequent experiments vindicated his thesis, and he received belated recognition in when he was awarded (with Charles B. Huggins ) the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine Aside from cancer research, Rous did investigations of liver and gallbladder physiology , and he worked on the development of blood-preserving techniques that made the first blood banks possible.

Weird science versus revolutionary science
While it's true that at least 99% of revolutionary announcements from the fringes of science are just as bogus as they seem, we cannot dismiss every one of them without any investigation. If we do, then we'll certainly take our place among the ranks of scoffers who dismissed (or even helped suppress) a large number of major scientific discoveries throughout history. Beware! Today many discoveries such as powered flight and drifting continents only appear sane and acceptable to us because we have such powerful HINDsight. These same advancements were seen as obviously a bunch of disgusting lunatic garbage during the times they were first discovered.
In science, pursuing revolutionary advancements can be like searching for diamonds hidden in sewage. It's a shame that the realms of questionable ideas contain "diamonds" of great value. This makes judging crazy theories much more difficult. If crazy discoveries were *always* bogus, then we'd have good reason to always reject them. However, since the diamonds exist, we must distrust our first impressions. We must never automatically discard ideas and observations which seem to be part of the "sewage." Sometimes the "obvious craziness" turns out to be a genuine cutting edge discovery. As with the little child questioning the emperor's clothing, sometimes the entire scientific community is misguided and incompetent, and only the lone voice of the "fringe" scientist is telling the truth.

Cancer Caused by an Infectious Agent
The year was 1905. A fund raiser was needed to assist Adventist medical institutions in getting out of debt. Dr. John Harvey Kellogg, inventor of corn flakes and sundry other foods, wrote a book entitled Living Temple to serve this purpose. But Living Temple contained elements of pantheistic philosophy, something akin to New Age teachings, and so it could not be used. As a substitute, Ellen White donated her book, Ministry of Healing On page 313 of Ministry of Healing we read this intriguing statement: Flesh was never the best food; but its use is now doubly objectionable, since disease in animals is so rapidly increasing. Those who use flesh foods little know what they are eating. Often if they could see the animals when living and know the quality of the meat they eat, they would turn from it with loathing. People are continually eating flesh that is filled with tuberculous and cancerous germs. Tuberculosis, cancer
