Sir Ronald Ross was a British physician and entomologist, noted for identifying the links between mosquitoes and malaria Ronald Ross was born in India in 1857 at Almora. His father was a soldier who eventually became a general in the Indian army. Ross lived in India until he was eight ,when he was sent away to boarding school in Southampton, England. At school he seemed to have been a dreamy imaginative boy whose main interest was in writing poetry, painting and composing music. When he left school his father suggested he went on to study medicine. Ross readily agreed, as he had no idea of what he wanted to do. So, in 1874 he became a medical student at St Bartholomew's Hospital in London. In 1879 Ross just managed to pass his Royal College of Surgeons exam - after 3 days cramming. This meant that he could only practice as a ship's surgeon, which he did for a couple of years until he passed an exam for the Society of Apothecaries. This meant that in 1881 Ross could join the British-Indian army medical services and eleven years later he began investigating the transmission and control of malaria. HOW DID HE DO THIS?

Sir Ronald Ross
British bacteriologist who received the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine in 1902 for his work on malaria. His discovery of the malarial parasite in the gastrointestinal tract of the Anopheles mosquito led to the realization that malaria was transmitted by Anopheles, and laid the foundation for combating the disease.
The English doctor and scientist Ronald Ross was born in Almora (Nepal), in family of the officer of the British army. Ronald was the grown-up from ten children in family. In the age of 8 years it have sent to England for training at school. Though Ronald Ross all life dreamed to be the writer, the actor or the musician (it has published set of the verses, plays and novels), it in 1874 under the insisting of father has acted in medical college at hospital St. Bartholomew's. Later 5 years it has ended college and since 1881 started to work as the physician in the British organization " Medical service of India ".
After graduating in medicine (1879), Ross entered the Indian Medical Service and served in the third Anglo-Burmese War (1885). On leave he studied bacteriology in London (1888-89) and then returned to India, where, prompted by Patrick Manson's guidance and assistance, he began (1892) a series of investigations on malaria. He discovered the presence of the malarial parasite within the Anopheles mosquito in 1897. Using birds that were sick with malaria, he was soon able to ascertain the entire life cycle of the malarial parasite, including its presence in the mosquito's salivary glands. He demonstrated that malaria is transmitted from infected birds to healthy ones by the bite of a mosquito, a finding that suggested the disease's mode of transmission to humans.
