Elihu Root and the Conservative Tradition, by Richard W. Leopold
Herberg, Will
IN THE course of his long and busy career, Elihu Root was thrown by events into three crucial encounters that may be taken as symbolic of his place in history. As champion of Republican... ...Much of this indictment holds for Elihu Root as it does for his fellow conservatives... ...Root fought what seems to us a pointless fight against the "progressivism" represented by Wilson and the earlier Roosevelt... ...Yet there was a kind of narrowness and limitation about him that seemed to confine his capacities and restrict the scope of his public services... ...All have, therefore, a responsibility for the picture that emerges... ...Anyone can deface it... ...Even conservatism in America became "liberal" in this sense, thoroughly permeated with the timidities, inhibitions, and illusions that characterize the outlook of the businessman in politics... ...Shall we say that Root suffered from the defects of his conservative virtues... ...and he fought hard to get the United States into the World Court... ...many today are beginning to discover in Root's thinking a wisdom and a virtue by no means apparent to an earlier generation... ...In March 1909 he began the third phase of his career, as United States Senator from New York...

Root-Tilden-Kern Scholarship Program Background At the age of 26, Elihu Root was a junior member of a distinguished defense team representing Boss Tweed. Root subsequently became a United States Attorney in New York, Secretary of War under President McKinley, and Secretary of State under President Theodore Roosevelt. In 1912, Elihu Root received the Nobel Peace Prize for his contributions to international law. The Root-Tilden-Kern Graduates The first class of Root-Tilden Scholars graduated from NYU School of Law in 1954. The members of that class and subsequent classes have shown a diversity of professional interests and have become leaders of the bar, public service, public interest law, community affairs, and politics. The Program in Operation and the Major Obligations of Root-Tilden-Kern Scholars The Root-Tilden-Kern Scholarship is awarded to students who intend to pursue careers in public service; public service includes employment with non-profit organizations, government (including judicial clerkships), and law firms whose primary mission is serving the public interest or under-represented clients. Most students do, in fact, enter public service after graduation. Those Scholars who, for the first ten years following graduation, work in public service will have no obligation to repay their scholarships. They are, however, expected to demonstrate their support for the Program by making contributions to the extent they are able to do so. Scholars who do not pursue careers in public service law for each of at least ten years following graduation are morally obligated to repay their scholarship.

Elihu Root – Nobel Lecture
Nobel Lecture
Towards Making Peace Permanent
Root begins with a lengthy articulationwhich is interesting if you're thinking of a career in international law. Otherwise, move on to the section dealing with international affairs, most broadly defined .] The humanitarian purpose of Alfred Nobel in establishing the peace prize which bears his name was doubtless not merely to reward those who should promote peace among nations, but to stimulate thought upon the means and methods best adapted, under the changing conditions of future years, to approach and ultimately attain the end he so much desired. The apparent simplicity of the subject is misleading. Recognition of the horrors of war and the blessings of peace, acceptance of the dogma "War is wrong and to keep the peace a duty", are so universal that upon the surface it seems only necessary to state a few incontrovertible truths and to press them upon the attention of mankind, in order to have war end and peace reign perpetually.
