Samuel Coleridge-Taylor
Samuel Coleridge-Taylor was born on August 15, 1875 in Holborn, England (a suburb of London). His father, Daniel Hughes Taylor, was a native of Sierra Leone, and his mother was English. Daniel Taylor came to England to study medicine. He was a student at Taunton College, Somerset and later at Kings College in London. His work led him to become a member of the Royal College of Surgeons and to obtain a license from the Royal College of Physicians. His father was not a part of Coleridge-Taylor's life, returning to Sierra Leone either before Samuel's birth or while he was a very young boy. William Tortolano in his book Samuel Coleridge-Taylor; Anglo-Black Composer, 1875-1912 (Metuchen, NJ, Scarecrow, 1977) states: The young doctor became an assistant... The white patients seemed to like the young assistant... Eventually he sought a practice of his own but this became disastrous because of resentment of his color. As an assistant he was received with little reservation, but as an independent doctor he was mistrusted. Dr. Taylor returned to Africa around 1876. As a child Coleridge-Taylor studied violin and sang in the choir of St. George's Church, Croydon. At the age of fifteen he was admitted by Sir George Grove to the Royal College of Music as a violin student. While at the Royal College his interest in composition grew. With the support of Colonel Herbert Walters, one of his first benefactors, and Grove, arrangements were made that Coleridge-Taylor would study composition with Sir Charles Villiers Stanford. While studying with Stanford, Coleridge-Taylor competed for one of the nine open scholarships at the college and was awarded the fellowship in composition (1893). At that time Grove wrote, "Now you are a scholar...you are now before the world..."

Theodore Roosevelt
U.S. President, Rough Rider, Conservationist
"Keep it for your children and your children's children, and for all who come after you, as one of the great sights which every American, if he can travel at all, must see." T.R. on the Grand Canyon Theodore "Teddy" Roosevelt was the colorful and dynamic personality who dominated the American political landscape from 1900 until World War I. He became the 26th president of the United States following the assassination of William McKinley in 1901. Roosevelt was the first conservationist President. He established the National Wildlife Refuge program, and was largely responsible for establishment of federal control and regulation over public lands of the West. He created many desert national parks and monuments, including Grand Canyon, Mesa Verde, Montezuma's Castle and Petrified Forest.
Early Years
Born into a wealthy New York City family on October 27, 1858, Roosevelt grew up a sickly child, suffering from asthma and bad eyesight. But as a young man, he devoted himself to vigorous exercise, gaining a physical stamina and love of outdoor sports that became a hallmark of his character. His promotion of the "strenuous life" was his lifelong preoccupation. He also developed an early interest in nature and animals. As this keen interest increased, he collected thousands of specimens for museums and scientific study. He was considered one of the leading field biologists of his day and was the author of many books and articles on natural history.

Awards and Recognition Theodore Roosevelt Rough Rider Award Gallery Home Theodore Roosevelt Rough Rider Award Angie Dickinson Angie Dickinson was born Angeline Brown in the small farming community of Kulm, North Dakota. She was one of three daughters of Leo and Frederica Brown, and grew up around the sights and sounds of her family's weekly newspaper offices in the 1930s. Her family owned and operated the Kulm Messenger and later, the Edgeley Mail.
Dickinson's family moved to California when she was ten years old, but her time in North Dakota gave her the grounding she needed to take a shot at stardom. She took her prairie work ethic to the aircraft industry and worked in a parts plant to finance acting lessons. A talent scout spotted her in a beauty contest and so began the career of Dickinson. Her first big break came when Howard Hawks cast her opposite John Wayne in "Rio Bravo."
Dickinson has appeared on the big screen with such Hollywood notables as Gregory Peck, Richard Burton, Marlon Brando, Roger Moore, Burt Reynolds, Peter Finch and Ronald Reagan. She has appeared in over 50 major movies and television productions, but is most known for her roles in "Police Woman" and "Dressed to Kill." Among her many accolades, Angie has a star on Hollywood's Walk of Fame and her work in "Police Woman" earned her a Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Dramatic Series. Recipients Next
