Sagamore Hill was the home of Theodore Roosevelt, 26th President of the United States, from 1885 until his death in 1919. From 1902 to 1908 his "Summer White House" was the focus of international attention. Otherwise, it was the home of a most remarkable fellow. Theodore Roosevelt, a family-centered father of six, ended his workday at 4 PM to play with his children. Often a man of contradiction, he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize and the Congressional Medal of Honor. He was a diplomat, internationalist, naval historian and strategist, combat commander of a volunteer cavalry regiment, and Assistant Secretary of the Navy. As a noted historian, biographer, essayist, editor, columnist, and critic. He wrote 36 books. He was a renowned ornithologist, an expert on and hunter of big-game animals, but also a pioneering American conservationist. He was a country squire, horseman, socialite and patron of the arts. He reformed the federal civil service and New York City police department, lost a race for New York City mayor, finished second in a 1912 third party bid for president, arrested outlaws as a North Dakota deputy sheriff, served as Governor of New York and Vice-President of the United States.

Cover Letter
Dear Friends, The school year has begun very positively. Students have returned with a sense of purpose and they have been very upbeat. Our faculty and staff appear rested and eager to engage in the process of learning. Here are some thoughts generated by our opening. Some of you may have already heard that we have met all of our building indicators and received an "excellent" on our school report card. Theodore Roosevelt High School is proud to receive this rating for the second year in a row. We congratulate our faculty and staff, our supportive community and our students on a job "well done". We also pledge to strive for further improvement. However, we believe that our school is so much more than OGT scores, attendance rates and graduation rates. To be sure, these are extremely important but, sustaining a wide range of programs and experiences as part of Roosevelt's culture is equally important to the well being of our students. A few years ago, our faculty determined, through a series of exercises, what an "ideal" Roosevelt graduate should look like. From this, it was determined and verified, by students and parents, that our school should seek to give students the best possible opportunity to develop skills in these areas: 1) Intellectual Development, 2) Life Skills Development, 3) Inter/Intrapersonal Development and 4) Character Development. We believe that, if we can impact all students in these four areas, we will become a "school of significance" in their lives. What follows, of course, is a belief that they, our students, can become "people of significance" in our larger world, regardless of socio-economic status, race, gender, ethnicity or disability! We believe that

Born in New York City, Theodore Roosevelt spent the earlier part of his life battling asthma; once he conquered the disease, he passed the remainder of his days battling external foes, often conquering them as well. His greatest gift, among many, was his unerring ability to promote himself in the media. Despite his upper class upbringing and education at Harvard College, Roosevelt was always able to get along with men of any class and social background. He sought a political life in order to reform society and prevent what he perceived was the threat of revolution by the lower classes. His fearless work as president of New York City's Board of Police Commissioners caught the attention of political associates of William McKinley . After his election as President, McKinley appointed Roosevelt assistant secretary of the navy in 1897. Much to Navy Secretary Long's chagrin, Roosevelt would make policy himself particularly when the secretary was out lunching. One such case involved the appointment and supply of Admiral Dewey's Asiatic Squadron with orders that they head for Manila harbor.

ROOSEVELT, THEODORE
, twenty-sixth president of the United States. The most dynamic of American presidents, Roosevelt was at once a realist and a romanticist in foreign affairs and a progressive in domestic policy. He was also a fervent nationalist and a consummate moralist. Born in New York City, Roosevelt graduated from Harvard in 1880. He emerged as the leader of reform Republicans in the New York State Assembly in the early 1880s. Thereafter, he pushed practical reforms as head of the U.S. Civil Service Commission (1889-1895), president of the New York City police commission (1895-1897), assistant secretary of the navy (1897-1898), and governor of New York (1899-1900). He vigorously advocated war against Spain in 1898 and then performed heroically in Cuba as colonel of a volunteer cavalry unit, the "Rough Riders." Elected vice president of the United States in 1900, Roosevelt became president after the assassination of William McKinley in September 1901. For seven and a half years, Roosevelt strove to balance the interests of farmers, workers, and businesspeople. Despite his image as a trustbuster, he preferred continuous regulation of giant corporations to dissolution under the antitrust laws, and to that end he drove through Congress legislation creating the Bureau of Corporations and strengthening the regulation of railroads. He also supported regulation of the food and drug industries. But his most significant accomplishment was probably the transfer of 125 million acres of public land into the forest reserves, the doubling of national parks, the creation of sixteen national monuments such as California's Muir Woods, and the establishment of fifty-one wildlife refuges.

, twenty-sixth president of the United States . Roosevelt became a national hero when he led his Rough Riders up Kettle Hill in Cuba during the Spanish-American War in 1898. He then served as Republican governor of New York before being elected vice president in 1900. Roosevelt became president in 1901 after the assassination of William McKinley. He is known for his trust busting, programs for conservation of natural resources, and creation of national parks. His Roosevelt Corollary to the Monroe Doctrine claimed the United States could intervene militarily in the Latin American states. He won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1906 for helping negotiate an end to the Russo-Japanese War. He also initiated the building of the Panama Canal Roosevelt supported Republican William Howard Taft for president in 1908 but tried for the Republican nomination in 1912. When he lost it to Taft, he split with the Republicans and started the Progressive , or Bull Moose party, with himself running for president. The split Republicans lost the election to the Democrats and Woodrow Wilson. Roosevelt hoped to gain the Republican nomination in 1916, but the delegates chose Charles Evans Hughes as their standard-bearer.
