Romance of Colombo's place names
by Andrew Scott Colombo has served the needs of many generations and it has a simple beginning dating back to the colonial era. The very beginning of Colombo dates back to 1505 when the militant Portuguese invaded the island and constructed a fortress in the city. It was primarily due to its strategic position that the invading Portuguese selected Colombo as their capital. Subsequently during the Dutch occupation Colombo was re-structured to serve their aesthetic and military needs. The British who followed the Dutch took every step to modernise this city and some of their art and architecture could be seen in Colombo as well as in other parts of the country even today. Colombo has undergone a tremendous change now and this change is reflected everywhere while over the past few years some of the popular place names in Colombo have been replaced with names with a Sri Lankan flavour and before all these names are changed it is worthwhile to probe the history and legends behind at least some of them. Many of the place names in Colombo such as Queen's Street, Prince Street, Duke Street have a royal flavour and they remind us of the colonial connections we have had.

82. A History Of Photography, By Robert Leggat: ROBINSON, Henry Peach
Henry Peach robinson was a pioneer of pictorialist photography, sir WilliamCrookes, is quoted in robinson s autobiography The secretary at that time
http://www.rleggat.com/photohistory/history/robinson.htm
ROBINSON, Henry Peach b. 9 July 1830; d. 21 February 1901 Henry Peach Robinson was a pioneer of pictorialist photography, earned the term "the King of photographic picture-making", and was certainly one of the greatest photographers of his time. He was very influential until the time of Peter Henry Emerson , who introduced naturalistic photography. He was greatly influenced by the paintings of J.M.W. Turner, and numerous references to him appear in his writings. At 19 he practised as an artist, and exhibited an oil painting at the Royal Academy of Art, in 1852. That same year he began taking photographs, and five years later decided to make a living out it, and opened a studio in Leamington Spa, selling portraits. He later established another studio in Kent.
The picture shown here is "Seascape at night", produced in 1870. In 1850 he was introduced to photography, being given instruction on the calotype process by Hugh Diamond , and he also learned how to use collodion . In fact, it was Diamond who most influenced his life and encouraged him to become proficient in photography.

    Editorial note on this letter
Englefield Cottage Near Egham Surrey 31st August 1800 My dear Friend I never wish to have any introductions to my own Poetry in the M P and therefore I thought of course that yours did not require it: the merit of your lines speaking for themselves. I have already taken care, I believe twice the Oberons. Tabithas. M R's and indeed most of the Poetry, you see there is mine. I know not when your letter was written but I only received it this it: and some charming literary characters, authoresses &cccc. I wish you would come and see us; I expect the Miss Porters, the beautiful Sisters of the painter of - - the Seringapatam Picture with their mother. I have had Mrs Fenwick, the Elegant authoress of "Secresy" & her daughter, here, this month past Tomorrow I expect Godwin and his Philanthropic friend, Mr Marshall they will only stay a day or two. I shall see Mrs Parsons here soon; and I regret that I was not in town when Mrs Bennet called upon me: If you know her , tell her that I lament not seeing her before she set out for Scotland.

Intelligent Female Nonsense I was contacted by a nice lady by the name of Katrina Malone who had some questions and comments about IKWIG. We got to discussing it and thinking about what might have happened to some of the characters before and after the period covered by the film. Here are some of our thoughts:
    Katrina
I think the film casts a spell over the viewer (or me at least) to such an extent that even the fact the hero has a name like 'Torquil' doesn't seem silly. And it really does stir the imagination to know what happened next...e.g. how will a city girl like Joan really adapt to life on Kiloran? Catriona surely has strong feelings for Torquil and on the face of it they have much more in common than he and Joan do. What happens when the unromantic sounding Mr Potts comes home from the Middle East? Col. Barnstaple is surely not all he claims to be (his accent just isn't quite right for a colonel somehow)? Torquil's own past in the Navy...The possibilities for a follow up are endless but thankfully have been resisted as it would be difficult to follow such a little gem.
    Steve
You're not alone in falling in love with it Katrina, many have even made the trip to Mull to visit the places where it was filmed. The story of Nancy Franklin (Editor on the New Yorker magazine) and her trips there is on the Criterion DVD and there are a few others on

In your absence, Mr. Lord, and that of your iron discipline, we had a fairly wide debate on amendment No. 10. A debate on an amendment relating to commercial property was turned into one on the housing market, and Opposition Members expressed much anxiety. It remains only for me to say, as we near the end of the first day's debate in Committee of the whole House, that there is no hidden agenda regarding the increase in stamp duty, and that no European convergence idea underlies it. The obsession of the right hon. Member for Wells(Mr. Heathcoat-Amory) with anything that might smack of Europe is well known to the House and he is respected by many for it, but he must not let that obsession overreach itself by imagining things where, obviously, none exist. I assure the hon. Member for Guildford(Mr. St. Aubyn) that I am notsadly or happilyhis constituent; that we have no hostility to financial assets; that we are pleased by the sustained confidence shown by the markets in the Labour Government; that we are sure that that will continue; and that we are delighted that property-owning democracy is also continuing, as polls show, to support this Labour Government.

    Introduction
In 1990-1991, I studied for an M Phil degree in History and Philosophy of Science at Clare College, Cambridge - I had already graduated, in 1989, with a BA in Natural Sciences (I spent the 1989-90 academic year rather unhappily as Deputy President of Cambridge University Students Union). My intention then was to do some research on the Irish astronomical tradition of the nineteenth century, hopefully ending up with a dissertation on the subject. I was inspired to do this by a talk I had heard at the Cambridge Group for Irish Studies in early 1989 by Jim Bennett, who then became my M Phil supervisor. As it happened, this essay (one of four 3,000 word essays that I had to submit as part of the course - the others, on the transmission of science from the Greeks to the Arabs Richard of Wallingford and medieval timekeeping , are also on this site) was the closest I got to the nineteenth century Irish tradition at that point - for my main dissertation , I was sidetracked into the beautiful world of medieval astrology by the late Roger French (see my 1992 lecture which draws from the dissertation). Several years later I did write what I had wanted to on the Irish astronomers in general, and published it in the

  • Ireland Governor of Hong Kong
The Governor of Hong Kong was a British official who ruled Hong Kong during the colonial period between 1841 and 1997 and was ex officio Commander-in-Chief and Vice-Admiral of Hong Kong.
    Governor of Hong Kong's Flag
Upon the reunification of Hong Kong with the People's Republic of China in 1997, this office was replaced by the Chief Executive of Hong Kong. The Governor, appointed by the British monarch , maintained executive power in Hong Kong throughout British rule, and with the exception of a brief experiment after World War II , there was no serious attempt was being made to introduce representative government, until the final years prior to the reunification. The Governor appointed most, if not all, of the members of the colony's legislature the Legislative Council (known colloquially as LegCo) until the first direct elections of LegCo in 1991, and all members of the Executive Council (ExCo), effectively the cabinet of the colonial government. Initially both Councils were dominated by British expatriates, although this gave way to more local Hong Kong Chinese appointees in later years. Most recent governors of Hong Kong were professional diplomats, but the last Governor, Chris Patten , was a career politician.

Within 10 years he was secretary at war and treasurer of the navy. When the Tories came to power in 1710 he lost his office. He became leader of the opposition in the Commons and a Tory target. He was convicted of graft in 1712 and sent to prison by the Tories, but was back in Parliament in 1713. His star began to rise again in 1714 after George I became king. Before becoming 'prime minister' in 1721, Walpole was first lord of the treasury in the government dominated by James Stanhope and Charles Spencer, 3rd Earl of Sunderland. While at that post, he introduced the first sinking fund (1717), but resigned his office shortly thereafter. He returned in 1720 as paymaster general and was first lord of the treasury for a second time in 1721 prior to becoming prime minister.
