Lord Hercules George Robert Robinson , 1st Baron Rosmead ( December 19 October 28 ) was a British colonial administrator. He was of Irish descent on both sides; his father was Admiral Hercules Robinson, his mother a Miss Wood of Rosmead, County Westmeath , from which he afterwards took his title. Passing from the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst into the 87th Foot, he attained the rank of captain; but in 1846, through the influence of Lord Naas , he obtained a post in the Board of Public Works in Ireland , and subsequently became chief commissioner of fairs and markets. His energy in these positions, notably during the famine of 1848 , and the clearness and vigour of his reports, secured for him at the age of thirty the office of president of the island of Montserrat Subsequently he was governor of Saint Kitts ), when he was knighted in recognition of his services in introducing

- W. Henry Robinson
William Henry Robinson (1847-1926) is little known today amongst the people of the town in which he lived most of his life, yet they have much to thank him for. It was he, and his father before him, who published many of the books, and one of the newspapers, which reveal so much of the town's history to Walsall historians.
For many years, this prominent local Victorian was at the heart of the cultural life of Walsall and, true to the tradition of his time, Robinson, who was a printer, publisher, journalist, author, historian, astronomer and cyclist, spent many hours in the pursuit of knowledge for his own edification and for the benefit of others.
His father, John Russell Robinson, brought him to Walsall from his home at The Hollies in Cannock, after his birth in 1847. J. R. Robinson set up a printing, publishing, stationery and retail emporium on The Bridge, Walsall - the 'Walsall Steam Printing Works'. In 1856, he also founded the original 'Walsall Advertiser', which for many years was one of Walsall's most prominent newspapers (although no relation to the present publication). Although the old Walsall Advertiser ceased publication on Christmas Day 1915, it can still be read on microfilm at Walsall Local History Centre.

Biographical Sketch of Joseph Robinson (1748-1807) by Phil Norfleet Joseph Robinson (also spelled Robertson in some documents) supported the Tory Cause throughout the Revolutionary War. Joseph was apparently was born in Virginia in about 1748; however, his parents names are unknown. He removed to the South Carolina (SC) Backcountry in about 1769. Whig sources have asserted that in Virginia, Robinson had been studying for the Presbyterian Ministry but became involved in a scandal and was forced to flee to South Carolina. At the beginning of the Revolution, in 1775, Robinson was a justice of the peace, a deputy surveyor for the SC Colony and held the rank of Major in the Royal SC Militia. He resided on the east bank of Broad River in the Camden Judicial District (now Chester County). His main plantation was located near the site of the Revolutionary War Battle of Fish Dam Ford. In fact, Robinson owned the so-called "Fish Dam," which was a stone fishery originally constructed by the Cherokee Indians, located at the point where the modern road SC 72 crosses the Broad River. In July 1775, at the request of Colonel

Prestons of Ireland Gormanston SOURCE: The source for information on the Prestons of Ireland is from "Preston Genealogy" by William Bowker Preston, however, the same information can be found in "Burke's Peerage and Baronetage" under Gormanston Prestons. Originally my parents were told that we descended from John Preston son of Jenico Preston the 10th Viscount of Gormanston. Since our John and his wife Eleanor Fairman were born about 1725-26 and the John Preston son of Jenico was born 1742, it is apparent these are two different Johns. Another problem is our John came to America from the Londonderry area of northern Ireland, while Jenico and the Gormanston Prestons are located in County Meath outside of Dublin. If anyone in the United States has a proven connection to the Gormanston Prestons I would like to know about it. Of all the Prestons shown on these pages I know of none connected to this line. There is a college or boarding school of about 450 students (1999) adjacent to the Gormanston Castle. I have had email from several students or ex students who have provided some current information. For one, in the late 1950's the castle was sold to the Franciscans who live there now, about 25 of them. The castle is in good shape. There is a legend about the castle that was conveyed by John McMahon of Massachusetts who attended Gormanston College. The legend goes that whenever a family member died, the foxes would gather at the foot of the steps. One of the family members went to WW2 and was listed as missing in action. After 7 years he was declared legally dead and his widow remarried. The groundskeeper had his doubts because the foxes did not appear during that time. Sure enough around 1952 he resurfaced, had apparently suffered loss of memory.

The Second Charter of Virginia

May 23, 1609
Background Consider These Questions
The Virginia Company of London was a joint-stock company set up by a group of merchants and wealthy gentry for the purpose of financing and establishing a colony in America, with the aim of making a profit. They petitioned England's King James I to grant them a charter, which he did more than a year later in 1606, and then again in 1609 and 1612. These charters gave the Virginia Company the authority to establish and govern a colony on the coast of America. The Second Charter was given exclusively to the Virginia Company of London.
Letters-patents, bearing Date the tenth Day of April, in the fourth Year of our Reign of England, France, and Ireland, and of Scotland the nine and thirtieth, GRANTED to Sir Thomas Gates, Sir George Somers, and others, for the more speedy Accomplishment of the said Plantation and Habitation that they should divide themselves into two Colonies (the one consisting of divers Knights, Gentlemen, Merchants, and others, of our City of London, called the FIRST COLONY; And the other consisting of divers Knights, Gentlemen, and others, of our Cities of Bristol, Exeter, and Town of Plimouth, and other Places, called the SECOND COLONY). And have yielded and granted in any and sundry Privileges and Liberties to each Colony, for their quiet settling and good Government therein, as by the said Letters patents more at large appeareth: Now, forasmuch as divers and sundry of our loving Subjects, as well Adventurers, as Planters, of the said first Colony, which have already engaged themselves in furthering the Business of the said Colony and Plantation, and do further intend, by the Assistance of Almighty God, to prosecute the same to a happy End, have of late been humble Suitors unto Us, that (in Respect of their great Charges and the Adventure of many of their Lives, which they have hazarded in the said Discovery and Plantation of the said Country) We should be pleased to grant them a further Enlargement and Explanation of the said Grant, Privileges, and Liberties, and that such Counsellors, and other Officers, may be appointed amongst them, to manage and direct their Affairs, as are willing and ready to adventure with them, as also whose Dwellings are not so far remote from the City of London, but they may, at convenient Times, be ready at Hand, to give their Advice and Assistance, upon all Occasions requisite.
