The Montenegran Peasant
Just at the midpoint of the 20th Century there were three important developments in stereochemistry . The first was signaled by Derek H.R. Barton 's paper "The Conformation of the Steroid Nucleus" ), which brought serious consideration of conformation of organic molecules to centerstage and ultimately led to Barton's Nobel Prize. The second was a paper (announced in 1949) by Johannes Martin Bijvoet (pronounced "buy foot" 1892-1980) a Dutch crystallographer. In " Determination of the Absolute Configuration of Optically Active Compounds by Means of X-Rays " Bijvoet reported that using a rubidium salt of (wouldn't you know) tartaric acid and a special property of the heavy Rb atom (called " anomalous dispersion ") he was able to do what no one had been able to do before - prove which enantiomer of a chiral compound was which. He showed that, given a 50:50 chance, Emil Fischer had guessed right when he drew the Fischer projection of tartaric acid 58 years earlier. From this time forward it would be possible to draw and name compounds according to their actual, or " absolute configuration , rather than their configuration relative to an arbitrary standard (like Fischer's D -glyceraldehyde).

Nobel Prize Winning Chemists Sir Robert Robinson The Nobel Prize in Chemistry 1947 Sir Robert Robinson was born at Rufford, near Chesterfield, Derbyshire on September 13, 1886, the son of William Bradbury Robinson , a surgical dressing manufacturer who invented his own machines for the production of lint, bandages, etc. , and the cardboard boxes for packaging them. He was educated at the Chesterfield Grammar School, Fulneck School, near Leeds, and at Manchester University where he graduated B. Sc. in 1906 and D. Sc. in 1910. Robinson's extensive researches in organic chemistry have dealt not only with the structure and synthesis of many organic bodies, but also with the electrochemical mechanism of organic reactions. His interest in the chemical constitution of plant dyestuffs soon extended to another group of vegetable bodies, the alkaloids, where the whole series of his researches are remarkable for their brilliant syntheses. He contributed greatly towards the definition of the arrangement of atoms within molecules of morphine, papaverine, narcotine, etc. These discoveries led to the successful production of certain antimalarial drugs scientific papers. In 1912 Sir Robert married Gertrude Maud Walsh, a fellow student at Manchester University. She died in 1954; they had one son and one daughter. In 1957, he married Stearn Sylvia Hillstrom of New York.
