Robinson, Sir Robert
(b. Sept. 13, 1886, near Chesterfield, Derbyshire, Eng.d. Feb. 8, 1975, Great Missenden, Buckinghamshire, near London), British chemist, recipient of the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1947 for his research on a wide range of organic compounds, notably alkaloids. After obtaining his doctorate from Victoria University of Manchester in 1910, Robinson taught at various British universities before being appointed to the Waynflete chair of chemistry at the University of Oxford in 1930, from which he retired in 1955. He was knighted in 1939. Robinson conducted research on the structure and synthesis of many different organic compounds. His early studies of plant pigments enabled him to synthesize anthocyanins and flavones, but his most important studies were undertaken on alkaloids; these are complex, naturally occurring, nitrogen-containing compounds that can have profound biochemical effects on living things. Robinson's efforts to determine the chemical reactions that form alkaloids in plants led him to discover the structures of morphine (1925) and strychnine (1946). He also formulated a qualitative electronic theory of the structure of organic molecules. His research played a role in the synthesis of penicillin and of certain antimalarial drugs as well.

Robinson, Sir Robert
English chemist, Nobel prizewinner 1947 for his research in organic chemistry on the structure of many natural products, including flower pigments and alkaloids. He formulated the electronic theory now used in organic chemistry.
Robinson's studies of the sex hormones, bile acids, and sterols were fundamental to the methods now used to investigate steroid compounds. His discovery that certain synthetic steroids could produce the same biological effects as the natural oestrogenic sex hormones paved the way for the contraceptive pill.
Robinson was born near Chesterfield, Derbyshire, and studied at Manchester. He first became professor at Sydney, Australia, 1912, returning to the UK 1915 and ending his career at Oxford 1929-55.
Robinson studied their composition and synthesis of anthocyanins (red and blue plant pigments) and anthoxanthins (yellow and brown pigments), and related their structure to their colour.
In his research on alkaloids he worked out the structure of morphine in 1925 and by 1946 he had devised methods of synthesizing strychnine and brucine, which influenced all structural studies of natural compounds that contain nitrogen.

Tenth Governor of New Zealand. Sir Hercules Robinson was born on 19 December 1824, second of the six sons of Admiral Hercules Robinson of Rosmead, Westmeath, Ireland; and Frances Elizabeth, daughter of Henry Widman Wood, of Rosmead. He was educated at Sandhurst and commissioned in the Royal Irish Fusiliers, but in 1846 accepted appointment under the Public Works Commissioners for Ireland and rendered notable service during the Irish famine (1848). He became President of Monserrat (1854–55), and Lieutenant Governor of St. Christophers (1855–59), before being appointed Governor of Hong Kong (1859–65). He was there during the China War (1860–61) and negotiated the cession of Kowloon. On 24 April 1846 Robinson married Nea Arthur Ada Rose D'Amour, sixth daughter of Arthur Annesley Rath, Viscount Valentia, by whom he had one son and three daughters. His connection with 11 British colonies reveal the Imperial authorities' high appreciation of his ability, while his seven Governorships might appear to parallel, or even exceed, the labours of his classical namesake. A younger brother, Sir W. C. F. Robinson, was also a successful colonial Governor. by Bernard John Foster, M.A., Research Officer, Department of Internal Affairs, Wellington.
