Press release February 7, 2005 The international biotechnology congress BioFinland 05 that focuses on genomic drug discovery will gather top experts and researchers from the US and Europe to present their latest studies and innovations. Dr Richard J. Roberts, Nobel Laureate in Medicine 1993 is one of the top-rated speakers. Dr Richard J. Roberts sums up his speech at the BioFinland 05 Congress. Dr Roberts was awarded the 1993 Nobel Prize in Medicine for his discovery of split genes. Roberts' discovery has changed the overall view on how genes in higher organisms develop during evolution. The discovery also led to the prediction of a new genetic process, namely that of splicing, which is essential for expressing the genetic information. The discovery of split genes has been of fundamental importance for today's basic research in biology, as well as for more medically oriented research concerning the development of cancer and other diseases. Dr Roberts present research interests are in developing tools for molecular biology, especially DNA modifying enzymes like restriction endonucleases and DNA methylases, and in computational molecular biology.

While successful, these releases failed to do more than hint at the extensive ambient compositions Richard had created and performed in coffeehouses throughout Tennessee. Encouraged by friends in the industry, Richard followed his heart into the ambient realm exclusively. The result was four critically-acclaimed ambient Zero Ohms releases: The Glass Bead Game (1999 ZOP), Atma-Spheric Surfaces (2000 ZOP), SUPREME*INFINITE*ESSENCE (2000 ZOP), and produced Innerstellar (2000 ZOP), a CD of harmonic overtone singing by his friend Gordon Rhyne. Collaboration with fellow Space For Music artist Brannan Lane produced the best-selling Soundfall to the Infinite (2002 SFM) and Immense Distance (2003 SFM).

of the Northern Gulf of Mexico Margin
Edited by: John B. Anderson and Richard H. Fillon This volume will appeal to sedimentologists and stratigraphers interested in source to sink issues, such as how various forcing mechanisms influence strata formation on continental margins. It is a valuable reference for sequence stratigraphers because it provides numerous examples of sedimentary response to changing climate and eustasy and characterization of systems tracts and their bounding surfaces. Lastly, the case studies presented in this volume can be used to test and calibrate quantitative stratigraphic models and for predicting reservoir occurrence within a sequence stratigraphic framework. He was 91 years old when he died. He is survived by his son, John Edward, grandson George, and great-granddaughters Monica (age 5) and Susan (age 2). Roberts was born in Raywood, Texas (about 40 miles east of Houston) in 1906. He received the A.B. degree in mathematics from the University of Texas in 1927 at the age of 21. Two years later in 1929 he received the Ph.D. degree. Roberts related to us that he was able to earn the Ph.D. so quickly because he made such a favorable impression in Moore's introductory topology course, that Moore immediately moved him into the advanced class. Roberts said that this event was "indelibly etched in my mind." Moore's confidence was quickly justified: In his first four papers, Roberts answered questions raised by C. Kuratowski, G. T. Whyburn, K. Menger and R. L. Moore, and by 1933, just four years after receiving his degree, he had published 14 papers. Gian-Carlo Rota, in his recent book

Quit tiptoeing around John Roberts' faith.
By Christopher Hitchens
Posted Monday, Aug. 1, 2005, at 1:27 PM PT
Will Roberts keep the faith? Everybody seems to have agreed to tiptoe around the report that Judge John G. Roberts said he would recuse himself in a case where the law required a ruling that the Catholic Church might consider immoral. According to Jonathan Turley, a professor of law at George Washington University, the judge gave this answer in a private meeting with Sen. Richard J. Durbin, D-Ill., who is the Senate minority whip. Durbin told Turley that when asked the question, Roberts looked taken aback and paused for a long time before giving his reply. Attempts have been made to challenge Turley's version, and Sen. Durbin (who was himself unfairly misquoted recently as having made a direct comparison between Guantanamo, Hitler, and Stalin when he had only mentioned them in the same breath) probably doesn't need any more grief. But how probable is it that the story is wrong? A clever conservative friend writes to me that obviously Roberts, who is famed for his unflappability, cannot have committed such a bªtise . For one thing, he was being faced with a question that he must have known he would be asked. Yes, but that's exactly what gives the report its ring of truth. If Roberts had simply said that the law and the Constitution would control in all cases (the only possible answer), then there would have been no smoke. If he had said that the Vatican would decide, there would have been a great deal of smoke. But who could have invented the long pause and the evasive answer? I think there is a gleam of fire here. At the very least, Roberts should be asked the same question again, under oath, at his confirmation.

Is roberts’s enthusiastic support from the far right troubling to you? to Judiciary Committee member and Minority Whip Senator richard J. Durbin, IL.

Featured Press Release
NWPC REACTS TO DAY TWO OF JUDGE ROBERTS HEARINGS
Washington, DC — “American women are tired of sports analogies and evasions,” said National Women’s Political Caucus (NWPC) President Llenda Jackson- Leslie.
Judge John Roberts has had plenty of opportunities to answer crucial questions that are on the minds of women across the nation—such as where he stands on the right to privacy and women’s abilities to make decisions that affect themselves and their families. We disagree with Judge Roberts' claim that he is unable to answer repeated questions on these issues to which he has selectively evoked the Ginsberg precedent. No Senator has asked him to “hint, forecast or preview” how he would rule in the future as Chief Justice. Instead, he has been asked to explain his judicial philosophies about issues on which he had previously written.
NWPC has striven to keep the door open on Judges Roberts' nomination. His evasiveness, coupled with the administration’s continued refusal to release documents similar to those reviewed during the late Chief Justice Rehnquist’s hearings, makes it increasingly difficult to keep that door open.
Unless Judge Roberts begins to provide some clear and direct answers, NWPC will be forced to oppose his nomination.

RICHARD ROBERTS, Ph.D.
New England Biolabs (Beverly, MA, USA) Dr. Richard J. Roberts is a Research Director at New England Biolabs, Beverly, Massachusetts. He was educated in England, attending St. Stephen's School and the City of Bath Boys' School in Bath before moving to the University of Sheffield where he obtained a B.Sc. in Chemistry in 1965 and a Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry in 1968. His postdoctoral research was carried out in Professor J.L. Strominger's laboratory at Harvard, where he studied the tRNAs that are involved in the biosynthesis of bacterial cell walls. From 1972 to 1992, he worked at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, reaching the position of Assistant Director for Research under Dr. J.D. Watson. He began work on the newly discovered Type II restriction enzymes in 1972 and in the next few years more than 100 such enzymes were discovered and characterized in Dr. Roberts' laboratory. His laboratory has cloned the genes for several restriction enzymes and their cognate methylases and studies of these enzymes has been a major research theme. Dr. Roberts has also been involved in studies of Adenovirus-2 beginning with studies of transcription that led to the discovery of split genes and mRNA splicing in 1977. This was followed by efforts to deduce the DNA sequence of the Adenovirus-2 genome and a complete sequence of 35,937 nucleotides was obtained. This latter project required the extensive use of computer methods, both for the assembly of the sequence and its subsequent analysis.
