Office of the Vice President for Research Ting After receiving his Ph.D., Ting went to CERN as a Ford Foundation postdoctoral scholar, then joined the faculty at Columbia University where he became interested in the physics of electron-positron pair production. (A positron is a nuclear particle like an electron, but with a positive charge.) In the spring of 1972, Ting, then on the faculty at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, began experiments at the Brookhaven National Laboratory in New York, again involving electron-positron pairs. In August 1974, his experiments produced a surprising reading, which Ting immediately recognized as something very different from theoretical expectations. In 1976, Ting, only 40 years old, and Richter shared the Nobel Prize in Physics. Less than two years had passed since their dual discoveries, the shortest time span from a discovery to such recognition in Nobel history. Today, Ting is the Thomas Dudley Cabot Institute professor of physics at MIT, but maintains many links to Michigan. Last fall, he organized a special symposium at CERN to honor Jones on the occasion of his retirement from the U-M faculty. Ting has helped the Department of Physics with faculty recruitment, and two of his former graduate students, Jianming Qian and Bing Zhou, are members of the faculty.

Nobel Laureate Richter to step down as director of SLAC
Burton Richter, Nobel Prize laureate and a pioneer of the colliders that now dominate high-energy physics, announced today that he will step down Aug. 31, 1999, as director of the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center after 15 years in the position. Richter, 67, is the Paul Pigott Professor in the Physical Sciences and will remain on the Stanford faculty, conducting research and working on science policy. He also will take office as president of the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics. "All the world knows Burt Richter's qualities as a physicist because they were recognized by the Nobel Prize," said Stanford President Gerhard Casper. "Stanford and I know his qualities as an extraordinarily able, dedicated, and tenacious director of the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center and as a citizen of the university. He has always performed with good judgment, integrity and candor. My almost seven years of working with Burt have been thoroughly rewarding."

    1976 Nobel Prize in Physics
The prize was awarded jointly to:
    • Richter, Burton , U.S.A., Stanford Linear Accelerator Center , Stanford University, Stanford, CA, and Ting, Samuel C. C., U.S.A., Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, MA, and CERN, Geneva, Switzerland

Charm: The 4th Quark Burton Richter (SLAC) led the group that designed and built the Stanford Positron Electron Asymmetric Ring ( SPEAR ). Experiments at SPEAR in 1973 - 1974 looked at the rate of occurrence of events in which a colliding electron and positron annihilate, disappearing and producing other particles in the process. At certain energies, the rate seemed inexplicably large.
Gerson Goldhaber, Martin Perl, and Burton Richter view an
event display in the SPEAR (Mark I) counting room. On November 10, 1974, remeasurements in the problematic energy range confirmed a dramatic rate increase. Many further checks found that this peak is due to the production of particles containing a new kind of quark the charm quark.

Richter tuto èástici pracovnì nazval J. Èástici nalezla i skupina vedená S.
