Giants of Knowledge
Steven Weinberg , University of Texas at Austin Steven Weinberg is a giant of theoretical physics. He received the Nobel Prize in 1979 for inventing a theory that unifies two of the four fundamental forces of nature. A talented author, he wrote the international popular science best seller "The First Three Minutes". He is professor at the University of Texas at Austin. "I think that one of the things that I love so much about physics is the dialogue with nature... and this dialogue is not one in which nature always agrees with the physicists!"

Carlo Rubbia , C.E.R.N. Carlo Rubbia is a former director of CERN, the European laboratory for particle physics, and a fearless experimental physicist. He shared the Nobel Prize in 1984 with Simon van der Meer for the discovery of particles that proved Steven Weinberg's theory on the unification of forces. "One should not forget that our scientific domain is called nature philosophy. Therefore it is a domain where experiment, measure and scientific observation have the last word."

A Ph.D. Deficit?
Earlier this month the Wall Street Journal published an editorial that brought to mind an earlier controversy. In Norman R. Augustine and Burton Richter, who are respectively the retired chairman and CEO of Lockheed Martin Corp. and the Nobel-Prize winning former director of the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center, argued that the U.S. federal government should increase spending on research to forestall a shortfall of American engineers and physicists with Ph.D.s. Will there really be a shortfall? A dozen years ago, the particle physicist Leon Lederman wrote in an article in Physics Today, a trade magazine, that even physics students of average abilities should have no problem finding a job because their skills are in such high demand. This article brought an immediate flood of letters from physicist with recent degrees, each stating that the author could not find a job in physics despite having stellar grades. Upon seeing the Augustine and Richter article, I wondered if perhaps they were making the same groundless claim that Lederman had made. I personally have never seen evidence of a shortage of physics Ph.D.s in this country . In academia, I have only seen a glut of physicists competing for a handful of jobs, and in business, I have never seen much of a call for applicants with physics Ph.D.s.

The Nobel Prize in Physics
I was born on 22 March 1931 in New York, the elder child of Abraham and Fanny Richter. In 1948 I entered the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, undecided between studies of chemistry and physics, but my first year convinced me that physics was more interesting to me. The most influential teachers in my undergraduate years were Professors Francis Friedman, who opened my eyes to the beauty of physics, and Francis Bitter, who gave me my first opportunity to do serious experimental physics.
In the summer following my junior year, I began work with Bitter in MIT's magnet laboratory. During that summer I had my introduction to the electron-positron system, working part-time with Professor Martin Deutsch, who was conducting his classical positronium experiments using a large magnet in Bitter's laboratory. Under Bitter's direction, I completed my senior thesis on the quadratic Zeeman effect in hydrogen.
During my years at the synchrotron laboratory, I had become interested in the theory of quantum electrodynamics and had decided that what I would most like to do after completing my dissertation work was to probe the short-distance behavior of the electromagnetic interaction. At that time renormalization was not yet part of the theory bag of tricks, and many talked of the possibility of a high energy cutoff to the electromagnetic force. I wanted to see if the cutoff was real, and, if so, at how small a distance it came into force. So I sought a job at Stanford's High-Energy Physics Laboratory where there was a 700-MeV electron linear accelerator. My first experiment there, the study of electron-positron pairs by gamma-rays, established that quantum electrodynamics was correct to distances as small as about 10

Sviatoslav Richter
Today would have been the 90th birthday of the great Soviet pianist, Sviatoslav Richter. I say "great," but I should say "greatest." For not even Emil Gilels, pearly scales and all, truly rivalled him. In Beethoven, Chopin and Debussy, he can never be surpassed. In Schubert and Schumann, he can never even be equalled. His interpretation of Schubert's "little" A major Sonata Op. 120 (D 664) is the sort of thing that can only be done once - just listen to the central Andante (available in various recordings). Before Richter, I do not think that anybody even began to grasp the full greatness of this music. Best of all are his interpretations of his contemporaries and countrymen, S. Prokofiev and D. D. Shostakovich. Conservatives, philosophers, conservative philosophers, and all others with a feel for music should take special note of Richter's scattered recordings of Shostakovich's Preludes and Fugues Op. 87 - music composed in the shadow of Stalin, and under the watchful eye of the bastard and butcher Andrei Zhdanov. Not even the composer's own recordings captured, for example, the dreadful stillness, desolation and paranoia of the great C minor Prelude, Op. 87 no. 20, the way Richter did. But Shostakovich is a big topic, for another day.

Dorfan succeeds Richter as head of Stanford Linear Accelerator
Jonathan Dorfan, associate director of the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center, will step up to the top position at SLAC next year, Stanford President Gerhard Casper announced last week. Dr. Dorfan, who according to SLAC was hand-picked by his predecessor Burton Richter, has since 1994 led SLAC's B-Factory project to pursue the question of why we live in a universe dominated by matter, rather than equal parts matter and anti-matter. Nobel Prize laureate Burton Richter, who has directed SLAC since 1984, recently announced he is stepping down at the end of August. He will continue conducting physics research and working on science policy at Stanford, where he is the Paul Pigott Professor of Physical Sciences. The selection of Dr. Dorfan for the top position was widely praised within the SLAC and Stanford communities. Renowned theoretical physicist Sidney Drell, SLAC's deputy director emeritus, issued a statement saying: "Jonathan has shown outstanding talents as the builder and manager of a major high-energy facility, the B-Factory. "He does excellent science and has shown all the important capabilities of leadership. He has the vision and has thought seriously about where we should go."

Richter is CJR 's assistant editor When New York Times reporter Alan Finder wanted to check on a city survey that had found an unprecedented 83 percent of New York streets "acceptably clean," city officials refused to discuss the methodology of the rating system or even to name the employees who had conducted the survey. The reporter was not surprised. In New York these days, he says, "It's clearly more difficult to get information from city agencies. Sometimes it discourages reporters - myself included. At other times you go out and you get your story anyway." In this case, the Times editors sent Finder to Washington, D.C. for training on how to apply a widely used rating system. His own survey of 800 city streets, published in April, gave New York a much lower grade than it had given itself.
In three and a half years under Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani, New York's metro reporters have found agencies and departments uncooperative if not downright hostile. Even getting basic information, interviews, or public records has become a strenuous exercise. "I have never experienced anything like this," says Village Voice veteran Wayne Barrett. "City agencies don't return phone calls. They cannot answer questions without clearing it with city hall." And as Giuliani takes credit for slumping crime rates across the city, reporters and photographers say they are less than welcome where crime does occur. Daily News reporters alone, according to a March 6 article in the paper, recounted eleven confrontations with the police "in the last six months." Keeping crime out of the news may help sustain the image of a safer New York. But "That's not the way democracy is supposed to run," says Gabe Pressman, a local TV newscaster and president of the New York Press Club.
