Natural Language Processing Overview People

Overview The goal of the Natural Language Processing (NLP) group is to design and build software that will analyze, understand, and generate languages that humans use naturally, so that eventually you will be able to address your computer as though you were addressing another person. This goal is not easy to reach. "Understanding" language means, among other things, knowing what concepts a word or phrase stands for and knowing how to link those concepts together in a meaningful way. It's ironic that natural language, the symbol system that is easiest for humans to learn and use, is hardest for a computer to master. Long after machines have proven capable of inverting large matrices with speed and grace, they still fail to master the basics of our spoken and written languages. The challenges we face stem from the highly ambiguous nature of natural language. As an English speaker you effortlessly understand a sentence like "Flying planes can be dangerous". Yet this sentence presents difficulties to a software program that lacks both your knowledge of the world and your experience with linguistic structures. Is the more plausible interpretation that the pilot is at risk, or that the danger is to people on the ground? Should "can" be analyzed as a verb or as a noun? Which of the many possible meanings of "plane" is relevant? Depending on context, "plane" could refer to, among other things, an airplane, a geometric object, or a woodworking tool. How much and what sort of context needs to be brought to bear on these questions in order to adequately disambiguate the sentence?

Lee, won the 1996 Nobel Prize in Physics for their 1971 discovery of the superfluid helium-3, a breakthrough in low-temperature physics, the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences announced today. (Oct. 9, 1996). "I couldn't believe it," said Lee, Cornell professor of physics, about getting a 5:30 a.m. telephone call from Sweden informing him of the prize. "I always felt that this was an important discovery, but this was a surprise. I thought, I guess I'm not dreaming." Lee taught an 8 a.m. undergraduate physics section today for freshmen and sophomores, but he spent the period describing his discovery.

A Message from Dean Robert C. Clark
Post date: April 23, 2002 In light of recent disturbing events at the Law School, I have consulted with various students and colleagues to consider what steps might be taken to create a better climate - an environment of genuine mutual respect and improved behavior patterns. Almost everyone agrees on the goal of promoting mutual respect and deterring racially offensive speech and conduct, even in our culture of great academic freedom and vigorous debate. The challenge is how to achieve this shared goal. Many ideas have been offered, and some are ready to be pursued. I write to announce the following:
  • Representatives of the Black Law Students Association (BLSA) will present their views and suggestions to the faculty at the beginning of the faculty meeting scheduled for May 8. I have asked Todd Rakoff, the Dean of the J.D. Program, and Suzanne Richardson, the Dean of Students, to develop and implement a responsive training program for incoming students and faculty. We hope to build on expertise we have in our superb Program on Negotiation, and to develop skills that will be useful throughout students' careers. The program might have a title such as "Negotiating Difficult Conversations in a Multi-Cultural Environment." Many details remain to be worked out, but we are confident that a useful program can be launched. If we are successful, we will have turned a challenge to our community into an opportunity for greater learning.

By Larry Bernard Faced with hundreds of e-mail messages, "in" boxes overflowing with congratulatory messages from all over the world, telephones ringing off the hook with calls from reporters, producers, former students and colleagues, Cornell's two newest Nobel laureates took time to be feted by their own department last Thursday. David M. Lee, professor of physics, and Robert C. Richardson, the Floyd R. Newman Professor of Physics, who share the 1996 Nobel Prize in physics with their former doctoral student, Douglas Osheroff, were the subjects of considerable accolades and entertainment at the top of the Clark Hall of Science, home of the physics department and its Laboratory of Atomic and Solid State Physics. Faculty, staff, graduate and undergraduate students and university administrators enjoyed Swedish meatballs and other fare while honoring the physicists who learned a day earlier that they had won the Nobel Prize for a discovery they made 25 years earlier. "This continues a very great tradition in the physics department," said Cornell President Hunter Rawlings, with Richardson and Lee grinning at the side of the assembled throng. The pair, Rawlings said, illustrate "the highest standards of teaching and research" that mark the department.
