Wladyslaw Reymont was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1924; a year later he died. He is best known for The Peasants , an epic, four-part novel of peasant life. It is almost entirely written in peasant dialect. Reymont considered it his best work. "I still have many things to say and desire greatly to make them public, but will death let me?" (from Reymont's note to the Swedish Academy, 1924) Wladyslaw Stanislaw Reymont was born in Kobiele Wielke, a small town in southern Poland near Lodz, a fast-growing industrial city. Reymont spent his childhood in the country and later depicted in his books the life of the peasants, their customs and work. His father was the village organist, who supported with his meagre income a family of nine children. He also tried to teach his children to play the piano. However, Reymont was more interested in reading, and devoured books whenever he had the change. Among his favorites were Robinson Crusoe and novels by Walter Scott. After third grade, Reymont left the school and his home - he had failed to pass the entrance examinations for a secondary school in Lodz. He was admitted to the tailor's guild as a journeyman in Warsaw. During this period he became interested in theatre and developed a lasting love for the stage. Reymont was not able to finish his journeyman years. When the Russian authorities suspected him of taking part in a strike in Lodz, he was expelled from the guild.

Wladyslaw Stanislaw Reymont
Quotations
A free peasant means free Poland, for he is the foundation of her greatness and independence. A strict prehuman voice was talking inside him as if it were the voice of the land and the villages. An irresistible fascination with terrifying death killed me ahead of time. At sunset the weather cleared up completely, a slight frost began to set in; cold, gray, thin fog began to settle on the fields, and after the sunset the sky was covered with purple scales and with gulfs filled with blood; the mud set quickly and strained under feet like leather straps. The sharp smell of frost mixed with raw smell of oak-leaves decaying in the woods, and sometimes the smell of smoke bourne by the fog. Being twenty years old, I naturally had a wild imagination and a tender heart. By the age of nine I had a thorough knowledge of contemporary Polish literature as well as of foreign literature in Polish translation, and I began to write poems in honour of a lady of thirty years. Naturally, she knew nothing about them. Every lord's mansion stands on the foundation of your bones, soldier, every field has been saturated with your sweat, and you, peasant, even if you worked your arms down to the stub, if you won a hundred battles, and faithfully gave the last drop of your blood for your country, you would always be a slave. There is no land for you, no heaven, no shelter, not even a doghouse where you could rest your poor head. You are the last before God and before people, the last one.

Reymont, Wladyslaw Stanislaw I was born on May 6th, 1868, in the village of Kobielo Wielkie in that part of Poland which was under Russian rule.
When I was six and already able to read and write Polish, my uncle the curate taught me Latin. Since he had no suitable textbook, he simply used the breviary. The lessons were tedious; the long stem of the curate's pipe assisted him daily in his instruction. At that time I discovered very interesting books in the parish library. I plunged into the history and classics of the. country. Reading became a passion with me. I carried books hidden under my clothes and read wherever I could. The study of Latin was maintained throughout the winter, but the spring turned me into a shepherd; as before, I was to tend my father's sheep, and I plunged only more eagerly into the Crusades and Walter Scott. That reading led to painful misunderstandings by its very contrast to my ordinary existence.
I was slowly preparing to enter the college attended by my elder brother. But unfortunately my uncle the curate died, and my father, deprived of sufficient resources to give me a higher education, decided to make an organist of me. He put me behind a piano and thus began my study of sacred music, so vigorously and so often punctuated by the cane that I quickly learned to abhor it.

The change was "ordered" by himself during his debut, as it was supposed to protect him in the Russian -annexed area from any trouble for having published in Galicia a work which would not be allowed under the Tsar 's censorship. Kazimierz Wyka, an enthusiast of Reymont's work, surmises that the correction could have been meant also to wipe out any association with the word rejmentować which in Polish local dialects means "to swear". He was born in the village of Kobiele Wielkie , near Radomsko as one of nine children of J³zef Rejment, an organist. He spent his childhood in Tuszyn near Ł³dż , after his father moved there to work in a richer parish. He was defiantly stubborn, so after a few years of education in the local school he was sent by his father to
