Louis Couperus (The Hague, Holland, 1863-1923) is still considered one of the foremost writers of Dutch literature. His works, written in a very rich and almost bombast style, always echo the approach of naturalism: the believe that people are predestined to act as they do and the basic idea that free will does not exist. Couperus wrote three kinds of novels: those set in the bourgeoisie circles of The Hague, those set in the former Dutch colony of Indonesia and those set in the ancient Greek and Roman past. Couperus' Iskander belongs to the latter category. The cruelty of the First World War (1914-1918) inspired Couperus to focus his attention on the characters and motives of the warlords of ancient Greece. In 1918 he published his novel Xerxes about the Greek-Persian wars, which was followed up by

WHO WAS LOUIS RENAULT?
He was born in 1877 as Alfred and Berthe Renault's youngest son. Louis developed early a bounless interest for machines. In 1888, when he was 11 years old, he installed electric light in his room at home: A system of ropes controlled from his bed enabled him to let the zinc plates down into the acid bath of a battery he had built himself. At the age of 14 he persuaded his father to buy him an old Panhard engine that he tinkered with for hours at a strech. At the age of 19 Louis patented a steam boiler. 1898 he build his first car, and this car had world's first 3-speed gearbox with direct drive. It is said that even if he hadn't started building cars , all his innovations would have guaranteed a life in luxury...
Louis Renault
His parents were not all that happy about his interest in machines and they thought that military service would knock some sense into young Louis. But even in army he kept on working at his innovations. He saved some money to buy a second-hand De Dion-Bouton quadricycle which he renovated and transformed almost beyond recognition, and voila the first Renault car prototype was born, and we all know what happened after that.

Name: Renault (Automobiles Renault) In 1898 in the Paris suburb of Billancourt Louis Renault built his first automobile in a small workshop at the end of the garden of his family home. It had a De Dion engine but Renault designed and built the chassis. A year later the house had become the headquarters for the newly-formed Societe Renault Freres and that summer brothers Louis and Marcel entered cars in the Paris-Trouville race. Louis won the light car class and before long the brothers (including a third sibling Fernand) were building car after car for customers. In their first six months in business they built 60 cars. By the end of 1900 they had built another 179 machines. From the very beginning Renault was involved in competition and there were a number of successes in the smaller classes in the city-to-city races which dominated racing at that time. In 1902 Renault hired a De Dion engine designer and began producing its own engines. The first big event was the Paris-Vienna race of June 1902 and Renault entered three cars in the light car class. Incredibly Marcel Renault won the event outright. The following year Marcel was killed when he crashed near Angouleme on the Paris-Madrid race. The disastrous event marked the end of the city-to-city races. Louis Renault withdrew from competition although in 1904 he built one racing machine for American millionaire Gould Brokaw. This was raced in the Vanderbilt Cup event by Maurice Bernin but without success.

Renault - 100 years of topline racing
Jarno Trulli, Jenson Button © Renault Renault comes back to Formula 1 this season with a full factory team - 100 years after the company's first major victory in automobile racing. And while victory this year may be difficult there is little doubt that the team will be more competitive than was the case in 2001. Competition was an important element in Renault's philosophy when the company was established by Louis, Marcel and Fernand Renault, three sons of a Paris button-maker, in 1899. Louis was the engineer and at the age of 11 designed an electric lighting system for his bedroom. At 14 he began to tinker with a Panhard engine and when he finished his military service in 1898 he built his first car in a shed at the end of the garden of the Renault family house in the Paris suburb of Billancourt. This was powered by a De Dion Bouton engine but the chassis was designed by Louis and the major innovation was that it featured a driveshaft transmission rather than the normal chain-drive system. In the summer of 1899 Societe Renault Freres entered cars in the Paris-Trouville race and Louis won the light car class. After that customers began to appear and in the six months that followed the brothers and their hastily assembled production team built 60 cars. The following year they built 179. Renault's early racing success was restricted to class wins in the city-to-city races but after a couple of years of success the company was strong enough to plan for its own engines and hired one of the De Dion Bouton engine designers and he produced the first Renault engine. This made it debut on the Paris-Vienna marathon at the end of June. The event was actually two events rolled into one with the Gordon Bennett Cup cars running only from Paris-Innsbruck and the rest of the entry going on to Vienna.

Biographical Dictionary of Management
RENAULT, Louis Louis Renault was born in Paris in 1877, the youngest of the five children of Alfred and Louise Renault. He died in prison in Paris in 1944. Renault attended the local Lycée Condorcet, but struggled through it, hating school. His family indulged his passion for mechanical devices and gave him his own workshop in his father’s clothes factory, to allow him to experiment. At the age of twelve, already mechanically adept, Renault admired the Serpollet Steam tricycle built by Peugeot in the Great Exposition in Paris in 1889. Ten years later the first Renault car was produced, and ten years after that Renault was manufacturing aircraft engines. The pace of innovation never slowed during his life, driven by what his friends called his ‘furious energy’. In 1896 Renault won a position as a designer for Delaunay-Belleville, an engineering firm that later entered the motor industry. In that year he applied for his first patent, for a steam generator, and sold it to his employer. On his return from military service in 1897–8, aged twenty-one, he persuaded his four brothers to form Renault Frères. The Renault company, unlike many of its competitors, did not grow out of an established metalworking firm, and Renault had no formal engineering training. Its rates of growth and financial success up until 1908 were nonetheless outstanding, and were due to Renault’s great engineering skills and determination.

La Une !
Journal Info-Plus Cote ...
