Obituaries Alan Wetherell 19321998
CERN senior research physicist Alan Wetherell died on 13 September. After studies at Liverpool and a period at Caltech, he came to CERN in 1959, going on to participate in a series of experiments at the then new Proton Synchrotron.
After work at Serpukhov in the late 60s and at CERN's Intersecting Storage Rings in the early 70s, he became head of this group when Giuseppe Cocconi became a CERN Director. The group shifted to weak interactions and joined with Klaus Winter for the CHARM (CERN/Hamburg/Amsterdam/Rome/Moscow) experiment.
He was appointed Leader of CERN's Experimental Physics Division in 1981, and served for three-and-a-half years. Subsequently he joined Ugo Amaldi and Jim Allaby in the Delphi collaboration at LEP, eventually taking responsibility for the hadron calorimeter which was built under his guidance by a Russian team.
In 1971 he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society (FRS). He was also a visiting professor at Liverpool. He formally retired from CERN in December 1997. Frederick Reines 19181998

Frederick Reines, who shared the Nobel Physics Prize in 1995 for his historic 1956 experiment with Clyde Cowan which discovered the neutrino, died in August.

Particles from the Sky
In 1932, a new elementary particle appeared. Unlike the electron, proton, and neutron, which had been found in the laboratory, this particle was created with radiation from outer space. Soon after discovering radioactivity in rocks, people found another source of naturally occurring radioactivitythe sky. In 1910, the Jesuit priest Theodor Wulf took an electroscope to the top of the Eiffel Tower, 300 meters above the ground. He measured more radioactivity there than at ground level. The Austrian physicist Victor Francis Hess took his electroscope up in a balloon. Five kilometers above the ground, he measured four times as much radiocativity. That meant charged particles were coming from outer space. The American physicist Robert Andrews Millikan named these extraterrestrial particles "cosmic rays." What sort of particles were cosmic rays? To find out, physicists took pictures of their tracks in a cloud chamber.

DOE Nobel Laureates The most prestigious scientific awards in the world are the Nobel Prizes for Chemistry, Physics, and Physiology or Medicine. All three of these Nobel Prizes have been presented since 1901, with the Nobel Prizes in Chemistry and Physics awarded annually by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences and the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine awarded by the Nobel Assembly at Karolinska Institutet. (The Nobel Prize web site is accessible at http://nobelprize.org Going back to the earliest days of the Manhattan Project, the Department of Energy and its predecessor agencies have blended cutting-edge research and innovative problem-solving to keep the United States in the forefront of scientific discovery for decades. As testimony to the high quality and impact of the research DOE underwrites, the Department of Energy has sponsored 40 Nobel Laureates since DOE's inception in 1977 - and a total of 80 Nobel Laureates since 1934 (associated with DOE and its predecessor agencies). (These Nobel Prize-winning scientists were recognized for work conducted while they were employed by DOE or predecessor agencies; for work conducted using DOE laboratory facilities; or because a national laboratory or a DOE program office provided long-standing and significant support for their other research efforts.) The complete roster of 80 DOE Nobel Prize winners, their biographies and photos is available at

UCI Reines Hall fire to cost up to $3.5 million
By Peggy Goetz
Irvine World News Damages, cleanup and rebuilding costs related to the July 23 fire in UCI's Frederick Reines Hall will total as much as $3.5 million, according to UC Irvine officials. A breakdown in costs includes: $1 million for cleanup costs and damage repair throughout the building; $1 million to replace laboratory and research equipment; and an estimated $1.2 million to $1.5 million to rebuild the two laboratories destroyed in the fire. Cleanup costs include gutting the two destroyed labs, cleaning up and replacing flooring, walls, windows and other parts of the building damaged by smoke and water. Laboratory equipment includes all the scientific appliances, equipment, supplies and chemicals needed to run a lab. The final category will include mostly construction cost of rebuilding. The laboratories will be ready for use by spring 2002.

Nobel Laureate Frederick Reines (1918-1998) Distinguished Professor Emeritus, Elementary Particle Physics
The award of the 1995 Nobel Prize in Physics to the late Frederick Reines provided the ultimate recognition of an extraordinary discovery and an exceptional scientific career in pursuit of fundamental knowledge. Perhaps no scientist in history has been associated so intimately with the discovery of an elementary particle and the subsequent thorough investigation of its properties as has Frederick Reines. Professor Reines earned his M.E. and M.S. degrees from Stevens Institute of Technology and his Ph.D. from New York University in 1944. He was a member and then Group Leader of the theoretical division of the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory from 1944 to 1959. He was Professor and Chairman of the Physics Department at Case Institute of Technology from 1959 to 1966 and then went on to serve as Professor and founding Dean of Physical Sciences at UCI. He is best known for his work, with Clyde Cowan in the mid-1950s, on the first detection of the neutrino. Reines then devoted the major part of his outstandingly productive career to the understanding of the neutrino's properties and interactions. This imposing volume of work has vastly enriched our knowledge of the properties of the neutrino and has also provided important information on its effect on astrophysical processes.

The School of Physical Sciences gained international prominence in 1995 when professors F. Sherwood Rowland (Chemistry) and Frederick Reines (Physics) each received the Nobel Prize, making UCI the first public university with faculty receiving Nobel prizes in two different fields in the same year. Research in the school rates among the nation's finest in atmospheric chemistry, organic chemistry, geoscience, elementary particle physics and plasma physics. State-of-the-art multidisciplinary research takes place at several centers and institutes, including the Institute for Surface and Interface Science, the Chemical and Material Physics Program, and the Center for Global Environmental Change Research.
