    • Last Friday we celebrated the remarkable discovery of the neutrino by Fred Reines and Clyde Cowan 40 years ago while working for the Laboratory. The neutrino was exceedingly difficult to detect. Since it has little or no mass and no charge, one can only infer its existence through its interactions with matter, such as its reaction with protons to yield a neutron and a positron. However, the mean free path for reactions with hydrogen is approximately 1,000 light years of liquid hydrogen. This led Wolfgang Pauli, who postulated the existence of the neutrino in 1930 to ensure conservation of energy and momentum in nuclear beta decay, to say "I have done a terrible thing. I have postulated a particle that cannot be detected." Hans Bethe later added, "there is no practically possible way of observing the neutrino." During the symposium, Reines, a recipient of the 1995 Nobel Prize for physics, and the late Clyde Cowan were lauded for their contributions to neutrino research.

Frederick Reines and the Neutrino The award of the 1995 Nobel Prize in Physics to Frederick Reines provides the ultimate recognition of an extraordinary discovery and an exceptional scientific career in pursuit of fundamental knowledge. Starting with the discovery of the neutrino, with his colleague Clyde Cowan in the mid-1950's, Reines has devoted the major part of his outstandingly productive career to the understanding of the neutrino's properties and interactions. Indeed, several years after the completion of the seminal work of Reines and Cowan, neutrinos were beginning to be used regularly to investigate the weak interactions, the structure of protons and neutrons and the properties of their constituent quarks. www.ps.uci.edu /physics/reinestrib.html (657 words)

Reines , working with Clyde Cowan (who died in 1974) made the first experimental detection of a neutrino (to be exact, the electron antineutrino), another member of the lepton family. The existence of neutrinos had been predicted in 1930 by Wolfgang Pauli as a way of accounting for the energy that seemed to be missing from reactions in which neutrons decayed into protons.
