Tadeus Reichstein (1897–1996) 1933-ban – Sir Norman Haworthtól függetlenül – elõállította a C-vitamint (aszkorbinsavat).

Biographical memoirs
Charles William Shoppee, 1904-1994 By Lewis N. Mander This memoir was originally published in Historical Records of Australian Science , vol.14, no.4, 2003. Introduction Early years At the age of 10, Charles went to the Stationers' Company's School where he flourished. He eventually became captain of football, captain of cricket, sergeant-major of the Officer Training Corps, School organist, head prefect, and captain of the school. Around the age of 13, he showed promising talent as a pianist and could 'struggle' (his words) through the Scherzo in B flat minor (op. 31) of Chopin. He studied with Dr R. Walker Robson, acquired the Matthey technique, and gradually became acquainted with some of the works of Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Chopin, Schumann, Liszt, Brahms, Cesar Franck, Scriabin, and Rachmaninov. At school, he was greatly influenced by two of the masters, A.E. Richards, BA (Cantab) (Mathematics) and F.T. Addyman, BSc (Lond), FRIC (Chemistry), eventually passing the Intermediate Examination of the University of London with Honours in 1921. Early career In 1924, Christopher Ingold, FRS, was elected to the Chair of Organic Chemistry at the University of Leeds and invited Shoppee to accompany him, obtaining for him a DSIR Grant of £120 per annum. Charles's mother had been, prior to her marriage, a teacher at a school in Kirkstall, near Leeds, and he had distant relatives in Wharefedale who were tenant farmers of Lord Harwood and lived in a delightful old farmhouse, dating from 1577, called The Nunnery at Arthington. He often used to walk to or from Arthington on Sundays and 'get a good lunch'.

Summary: The Marcel Benoist Foundation for the promotion of scientific research The Board of Trustees of the Foundation The Marcel Benoist Prize Past laureates The Marcel Benoist Foundation for the promotion of scientific research was founded on November 5, 1920 by the Swiss Federal Council to execute the last will and testament of Marcel Benoist, a French national living in Lausanne who had unexpectedly left most of his wealth to the Swiss Confederation under the condition that it be used to fund an annual scientific award. In his testament written in 1914, he expressed his intent to endow a scientific award: "I give and bequeath to the Government of the Helvetic Republic all the assets which I have deposited in Switzerland, at the Swiss National Bank in Bern and at the Swiss Bank Corporation in Basle. The income from these assets shall be used to award every year a single prize to a scientist of Swiss nationality or a resident of Switzerland, who shall have made during the year the most useful scientific discovery or study, in particular in disciplines which are of significance for human life."

89. OLYMPUS MIC-D: Polarized Light Gallery - Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C)
was first synthesized independently by Nobel Prize winners Sir Walter NormanHaworth in England and tadeus reichstein in Switzerland in 1933.
http://www.mic-d.com/gallery/polarized/ascorbicacid1.html
Polarized Light Gallery Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C) Known in the over-the-counter food supplement trade as vitamin C, ascorbic acid, a water-soluble organic compound, is the most studied and debated of all the vitamins. Commonly found in nature in peppers, citrus fruits, tomatoes, melons, broccoli, and green leafy vegetables, vitamin C assists the body in the production of collagen, but is widely believed to be a strong antioxidant, a fighter of cancer, and a key player in detoxifying the body of foreign substances. View a second image of crystallized ascorbic acid. Because it is water-soluble, ascorbic acid must be replenished on a regular basis and is concentrated in the watery portions of fruits and vegetables. As one of the least chemically stable molecules in the vitamin family, this weak acid is easily destroyed by mild alkali solutions such as baking soda. After ingestion, vitamin C is readily absorbed by the intestines and may be found in tissue water throughout the body. Scurvy, a nutrient deficiency of vitamin C, was prevalent with sailors lacking fresh fruit and vegetables in their diets on long voyages, and its symptoms were described in the Ebers Papyrus , one of the oldest known medical texts of ancient Egypt. In 1747, Scottish Naval surgeon James Lind discovered that citrus fruits could cure scurvy and soon thereafter, the Royal Navy included such fruits as oranges, lemons, and limes in the diet of sailors. The famous voyages of Captain James Cook were made possible by Lind's discovery and the nickname for British soldiers, particularly sailors, as "Limeys" has stuck ever since.
