John William Strutt Lord Rayleigh
Born: 12 Nov 1842 in Langford Grove (near Maldon), Essex, England
Died: 30 June 1919 in Terling Place, Witham, Essex, England
John Strutt suffered from poor health and his schooling at Eton and Harrow was disrupted and for four years he had a private tutor. He entered Trinity College, Cambridge in 1861, graduating in 1864. His first paper in 1865 was on Maxwell's electromagnetic theory. He worked on propogation of sound and, while on an excursion to Egypt taken for health reasons, Strutt wrote Treatise on Sound (1870-1). In 1879 he wrote a paper on travelling waves, this theory has now developed into the theory of solitons. His theory of scattering (1871) was the first correct explanation of why the sky is blue. In 1873 he succeeded to the title of Baron Rayleigh. From 1879 to 84 he was the second Cavendish professor of experimental physics at Cambridge succeeding Maxwell. Then in 1884 he became secretary of the Royal Society. Rayleigh discovered the inert gas argon in 1895, work which earned him a Nobel Prize, in 1904. He was awarded the De Morgan Medal of the London Mathematical Society in 1890 and was president of the Royal Society between 1905 and 1908. He became chancellor of Cambridge University in 1908.

Researchers Lord Rayleigh John William Strutt, one of the last intellectual giants of the Victorian era, world-famous as experimental physicist and discoverer of argon.
In 1876 in the discussion of William Barrett 's paper on spiritualism before the British Association for the Advancement of Science, he declared that his own interest in the subject dates from 1874. He was first attracted to it by the investigations of William Crookes . "Although," he said, "my opportunities have not been so good as those enjoyed by Professor Barrett, I have seen enough to convince me that those are wrong who wish to prevent investigation by casting ridicule on those who may feel inclined to engage in it."
Physical phenomena impressed him more than mental ones. He had many sittings with Mrs. Kate Fox-Jencken and Eusapia Palladino . He was nonplussed by the result. Yet he never felt sufficiently convinced to declare himself in public. To automatic writing and trance he paid little attention. He did not think the evidence for telepathy conclusive, but he declared that, given irrefragable evidence, for telepathy between living persons, he would have no difficulty in extending it to telepathy from the dead.
Speaking of Mrs. Kate Fox-Jencken and

Blodgett, Katharine (Burr)
An industrial physicist and physical chemist who is known for her work in surface chemistry. She is especially known for her work in monomolecular and multilayer films (termed "Blodgett films") and her invention of non-reflecting ("invisible") glass, which is used in optical instruments.
Brown, Robert
Although primarily a botanist, Brown is known to colloid science for his 1827 discovery that dispersed particles in water move about randomly, even when the water itself appears motionless. The phenomenon, explained later by others, is due to bombardments of the particles by water molecules and is known as Brownian motion.
Coulter, Wallace
An electrical engineer best known as the discoverer of the Coulter principle, a sensing-zone method for automatically counting and sizing microscopic particles suspended in a liquid. He developed this into the "Coulter Counter" which was first applied to the complete blood count diagnostic test, and later applied to other colloids in a variety of other industries.
Einstein, Albert

Discussion
start Albert Abraham Michelson (1852-1931) Germany
The most important fundamental laws and facts of physical science have all been discovered, and these are now so firmly established that the possibility of their ever being supplemented in consequence of new discoveries is exceedingly remote. (1903)
Quoted by Peter Coveney and Roger Highfield in The Arrow of Time, Flamingo, London 1991, p 67. John William Strutt a.k.a. Lord Rayleigh (1842-1919) England James Hopwood Jeans (1877-1946) England Ultraviolet Catastrophe A blackbody is an idealized object which absorbs and emits all frequencies. Classical physics can be used to derive an equation which describes the intensity of blackbody radiation as a function of frequency for a fixed temperaturethe result is known as the Rayleigh-Jeans law. Although the Rayleigh-Jeans law works for low frequencies, it diverges as f ; this divergence for high frequencies is called the ultraviolet catastrophe. Wilhelm Carl Werner Otto Fritz Franz Wien (1864-1928) Prussia-Germany Infrared Catastrophe In 1896 Wien derived a distribution law of radiation. Planck, who was a colleague of Wien's when he was carrying out this work, later, in 1900, based quantum theory on the fact that Wien's law, while valid at high frequencies, broke down completely at low frequencies.
