By Robert V. Pound and Norman F. Ramsey
KENNETH TOMPKINS BAINBRIDGE WAS recognized early in his scientific career for his design and applications of mass spectrographs as research tools for nuclear mass measurements. His precise measurements of mass differences between nuclear isotopes, when compared to the energies of decay radiations, allowed him to confirm the mass-energy equivalency of A. Einstein. In collaboration with the late J. Curry Street he designed and built the cyclotron at Harvard University that was sent to Los Alamos, New Mexico, during World War II. Bainbridge participated in the formation of the wartime Radiation Laboratory at MIT, where he spent more than two and one-half years developing microwave radar, particularly high-powered systems. In the spring of 1943 he transferred to the nuclear weapons project at Los Alamos, where he oversaw the test explosion of the first nuclear bomb at Alamogordo. Returning to Harvard after the war, he renewed his work with mass spectrographs, began the construction of a new cyclotron, and was able to measure changes in the decay rates of some radioactive nuclei resulting from differing molecular bonding and from physical compression. FAMILY BACKGROUND COLLEGE YEARS Ken gave up his activities in radio and schoolboy chemistry, when in 1921 he entered MIT to study electrical engineering in a cooperative program with the General Electric Company. In that five-year program he was able to receive both an S.B. and an S.M. degree and to work summers at one of the General Electric facilities. In Ken's case this was at first in Lynn, Massachusetts, and then mostly at the Research Laboratories in Schenectady, New York. After completion, a natural consequence of his participation in the cooperative program with GE would have been for him to continue as an engineer at General Electric. As an outgrowth of his work there, Ken obtained patents on photo-cathode materials for photocells

The University Record , April 19, 1993
Hillary Clinton to give commencement address
When she and candidate Bill Clinton were on campus in October, more than 13,000 students and community residents welcomed them in front of the Rackham Building. Hillary Clinton will be one of five persons receiving honorary degrees at spring commencement. Others who will receive honorary degrees are Countess Albina du Boisrouvray, president of the Association Francois-Xavier Bagnoud; Donald Hall, poet; Norman F. Ramsey, physicist; and Margaret Dow Towsley, humanitarian and philanthropist. Some 6,500 students on the Ann Arbor campus expect their degrees this spring. The commencement ceremony will begin at 11 a.m. Norman F. Ramsey, who will receive an honorary doctor of science degree, is the Higgins Professor of Physics at Harvard University. He received the 1989 Nobel Prize and the 1988 National Medal of Science. He was president of the American Physical Society and president of Universities Research Association, which operates the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory. He was chairman of the Board of Governors of the American Institute of Physics. His research work has ranged from molecular beams to particle physics and has concentrated on precision measurements of the electric and magnetic properties of nucleons, nuclei, atoms and molecules.

The Atomic Hydrogen Maser
Norman F Ramsey
Lyman Physics Laboratory Harvard University, Cambridge/Mass., USA Received 27 October 1964
Print publication: Issue 1 (January 1965) Abstract. The atomic hydrogen maser is described. In this device hydrogen atoms in the upper hyperfine state are focused onto the entrance aperture of a teflon coated quartz bulb in which the atoms are stored for about a second. This bulb is surrounded by a cylindrical radiofrequency cavity. When the cavity is tuned to the hyperfine frequency of atomic hydrogen, maser radiation is produced. Due to the large line Q H D Cs = 9,192,631,770.0 cps. The method by which the deuterium has been measured depends upon the effect of a deuterium magnetic resonance transition upon the intensity of the hydrogen maser oscillation amplitude when a mixture of hydrogen and deuterium is used. This method should be capable of extension to a number of different atoms. The hydrogen maser apparatus has been used to measure the spin exchange collision cross section between atomic hydrogen and a number of different gases. Results of some of these measurements are reported. Measurements of the dependence of the hydrogen hyperfine frequency upon a strong externally applied electrostatic field are given. doi:10.1088/0026-1394/1/1/004

News for January 2003
Nobel laureates oppose war against Iraq
29 January 2003 Forty-one American Nobel laureates have signed a declaration opposing war with Iraq. The declaration was organised by Walter Kohn, a theoretical physicist at the University of California at Santa Barbara, and former adviser to the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency at the Pentagon. The signatories include 19 winners of the physics prize. The declaration reads: "The undersigned oppose a preventive war against Iraq without broad international support. Military operations against Iraq may indeed lead to a relatively swift victory in the short term. But war is characterized by surprise, human loss and unintended consequences. Even with a victory, we believe that the medical, economic, environmental, moral, spiritual, political and legal consequences of an American preventive attack on Iraq would undermine, not protect, US security and standing in the world." The signatories include Norman Ramsey, who worked on the Manhattan Project, and Charles Townes, a former research director of the Institute for Defense Analyses at the Pentagon. Townes was also chairman of a federal panel that studied nuclear warheads.
