Covent Garden is renowned across the world for its bohemian scene, cultural atmosphere and architectural elegance. Playing host to the Royal Opera House, an array of theatres and the famous market building, Covent Garden was the first square ever to be built in the country and is rich with both historical and modern architectural designs. A number of organisations are charged with the preservation of Covent Garden and all work hard to prevent any developments and building works from spoiling the traditional charm of the area. When number 11 James Street was undergoing complete external refurbishment, it was no exception. Strict guidelines were imposed to maintain these efforts and ensure that the work complemented the surrounding aesthetics of the area. A key part of the restoration at number 11 James Street lay with its guttering systems and Yeoman Rainguard was appointed to supply a rainwater system that would fit in with the building and the buildings adjacent to it.

Columbia Nobel Laureates
The diversity of educational opportunities that now exists at Columbia has grown out of a long and distinguished tradition of physics teaching and research. I.I. Rabi, Polykarp Kusch, Willis Lamb, Charles Townes, T.D. Lee, James Rainwater, Leon Lederman, Melvin Schwartz, and Jack Steinberger all received the Nobel Prize for work done while they were members of the physics faculty. Horst Stormer received the Nobel Prize after joining the Columbia faculty. Rabi, Rainwater, Lederman, and Schwartz also received their doctorates from Columbia, as have six more Nobel laureates: Robert Millikan, Julian Schwinger, Leon Cooper, Val Fitch, Arno Penzias, And Norman Ramsey. Columbia graduates, along with many scientists who spent their formative years here, have gone on to make extraordinary contributions to science as researchers, teachers, and intellectual leaders.
One Hundred Years Ago
The graduate department was formally established in 1892, although the roots of graduate physics can be traced to the opening of the School of Mines in 1864. In 1899, the American Physical Society was founded at a meeting at Columbia. At the beginning of this century, Lorentz's work led to Einstein's theory of relativity, and Planck's black-body radiation formula introduced the concept of quantum, which culminated in the discovery of quantum mechanics. All of our modern scientific and technological developmentsnuclear energy, atomic physics, molecular beams, lasers, x-ray technology, semiconductors, superconductors, supercomputers can be realized only because we have relativity and quantum mechanics. To humanity and to our understanding of nature, these are all- encompassing.

Russell Co., KY Marriages, 1826-1865 - Rainwater-Russell
I originally compiled this data during 1984-1985 from the original documents in the Russell Co., KY Courthouse. The contents were transcribed onto index cards, which were transcribed into typewritten form in 1985. The Web version consists of files scanned from the typed document. While I am proofreading this material and comparing it to the typed version as I make it available on the Web, it is subject to error at the time of transcription, typing, and scanning. I apologize for any errors in transcription and will correct any if proper documentation is provided (i.e., photocopies of the records); I will also be glad to consider adding pertinent notes. The format is as follows:
Groom's name, bride's name. Date. Person performing the marriage. Date of bond, surety. Witnesses. Other information (parentage, notes, etc.) Book-page. For example:
Brown, Berryman (Benjamin) G. to Sarah E. Downey. December 20, 1855. Married by Wm. W. Bernard, M.G., at John Downey, Sr.'s. Bond: Dec. 19, 1855, James S. Bernard and Sherrod W. Downey as sureties. Witnesses: Sherrod Downey, Dick Wilson, John Downey, Sr. 2-95,96. The groom in this example is Berryman G. Brown. The bride is Sarah E. Downey. The marriage was on Dec. 20, 1855. The marriage was performed by Wm. W. Bernard at John Downey's. The bond was date Dec. 19, 1855 with James S. Bernard and Sherrod W. Downey as the sureties. The witnesses were Sherrod Downey, Dick Wilson, and John Downey, Sr. The documents are in Book 2, pages 95-96 in the Russell County Courthouse.

Mary Ann Rainwater Perry
Delaney Ann Miller married Burrell Perry Henley in 1852 in Hancock county,Mississippi. His parents, Mary Ann Perry and Jeremiah Henley married February 13, 1813 at Henleyfield, Hancock, Ms. Jeremiah was born 1775 in Orange county, North Carolina and Mary Ann in about 1790. She is the daughter of Burrell Perry and Mary Ann Rainwater. Mary Ann Rainwater Perry has proven to be quite an enigma. No record has been found documenting her marriage or parentage. She is enumerated in the 1850 Hancock county, Mississippi census in her daughter’s household, Rebecca and James Wood McGeehee. From this census her birthdate and place are estimated as about 1768 in North Carolina. The 1860 Hancock county census is missing and prior to 1850 only the head of household was enumerated by name; hence, we can not track her any more precisely in the censuses. Very little is known of her life except that she apparently accompanied her husband from North Carolina through Georgia, Tennessee, Mississippi and Louisiana during the late 1790s and early 1800s. Whether she accompanied him to Texas in the early 1830s or not is unknown for certain. Whether she did or remained in Louisiana and Mississippi these things are known:
