A nation's leader gunned down. A patsy manipulated into place at the crucial moment. A conspiracy by the secret police. A government commission which issued a lone-gunman theory explaining the killing. And an "amateur photographer" who caught the whole thing on film. No, we're not talking about the Kennedy assassination. We're talking about the murder of Yitzhak Rabin, and his killers are still at large. Barry Chamish, editor of the political intelligence journal Inside Israel, probes the troubling evidence indicating a Rabin assassination conspiracy.

Yitzhak Rabin's Last Speech November 4, 1995 Tel Aviv City Hall Plaza
Permit me to say that I am deeply moved. I wish to thank each and every one of you, who have come here today to take a stand against violence and for peace. This government, which I am privileged to head, together with my friend Shimon Peres, decided to give peace a chance a peace that will solve most of Israel's problems. I was a military man for 27 years. I fought as long as there was no chance for peace. I believe that there is now a chance for peace, a great chance. We must take advantage of it for the sake of those standing here, and for those who are not here and they are many. I have always believed that the majority of the people want peace and are ready to take risks for peace. In coming here today, you demonstrate, together with many others who did not come, that the people truly desire peace and oppose violence. Violence erodes the basis of Israeli democracy. It must be condemned and isolated.

Biography of Yitzhak Rabin
As commander of the Harel brigade, Rabin played a crucial role in the defense of Jerusalem in 1948, particularly in operation Nachshon, which lifted the blockade to Jerusalem in the beginning of April, 1948, and in fighting in the Katamonim. By a quirk of fate, Rabin was also the commander in charge in June of 1948, when David Ben Gurion gave the order to sink the Altalena, a ship carrying arms for the Irgun underground, which Ben-Gurion and others suspected was plotting a coup. Rabin studied studied at the Camberly Staff College in Britain until 1953. In 1954 he was appointed head of the IDF Training Branch by Moshe Dayan, and was promoted to Brigadier General. He planned the Israeli officers training college. From 1956-1959 he was Chief of Operations of the Northern Command, and in 1961 he became deputy Chief of Staff of the IDF. On Jan 1, 1964, he became Chief of Staff of the IDF, and led the IDF to victory in the 6 Day War. Rabin retired from the Army in 1968. Though he had not been a member of the Mapai party, he joined the successor Labor party and was subsequently appointed ambassador to the United States, a political exile intended to keep him from being a serious contender for office. As ambassador, he was the architect of the close relationship between Israel and the United States that evolved after the 6-day war, which in his view had to be based on shared strategic concerns and the strategic value of Israel to the United States rather than appeals to the power of the Jewish vote.

Introduction
Israeli Prime Minister Yitshak Rabin was assassinated by right-wing religious settler fanatic Yigal Amir at a giant peace rally on the evening of November 4, 1995. The rally had been called to protest violence that had been rising on both sides, and to reaffirm the commitment of the government and the Israeli people to peace. Amir assassinated Rabin in order to prevent the continuation of the peace process, as he said. The assassination was preceded both by Palestinian violence in the territories, despite pledges by the PLO to renounce violence and terrorism, and by constant agitation by Israeli right-wing settlers and religious fanatics. Rabbis in the West bank gave sermons in which they proclaimed that Rabin was a traitor and a persecutor of the Jewish people, worthy of death. This agitation was aided and abetted by members of the opposition Likud party and other right-wing politicians. The Likud and the right had long since replaced themselves in the national consciousness of Israelis as the true "fathers" of the Jewish state, rather than the Zionist movement. They called themselves "The National Camp" ( Mahaneh Leumi ) as opposed to "The Other Camp." The implication that the opposition was composed of traitors and supporters of terror - "

Yitzhak Rabin: An Appreciation
By Harvey Sicherman November 1995
Vol. 2, No. 3
Harvey Sicherman, Ph.D., is President of the Foreign Policy Research Institute. He was an aide to three U.S. secretaries of state.
From General to Statesman
Political Rebirth The Lebanon War, like the Yom Kippur War, rescued Rabin. A national unity government, headed by Shimon Peres with Yitzhak Shamir as deputy, was created to take Israel out of Lebanon and to stabilize its runaway economy. After two years, Shamir became Prime Minister. But most remarkably, Rabin remained Defense Minister throughout. Shamir proved much less enthusiastic about this scheme than Rabin for elementary reasons. Rabin did not see autonomy as an end in itself but rather the only way to diffuse the Intifada and rid Israel of responsibility for the Arab population. This could lead eventually to an Arab sovereignty over part of the territories, anathema to Shamir and the Likud. Moreover, Rabin knew that the local Palestinians would not act decisively without the PLO, and unlike Shamir, he was prepared to give the PLO an indirect role on the Palestinian negotiating team. In 1990, the Unity Government collapsed over this point when the Bush administration looked like it might produce the Palestinians. Following some frantic bidding, Shamir outmaneuvered Peres and formed a Likud government. Rabin was out. And once more, Peres bested him in retaining control of the Labour Party.

Yitzhak Rabin
Country: Israel. Cause: Peace agreement between Israel and Palestinians. Background: Britain gains control of Palestine following the First World War, promising the formation of a Jewish homeland that will not "prejudice the civil and religious rights of existing non-Jewish communities". As Jewish immigration to Palestine increases and conflict between the Arab and Jewish communities escalates the British determine to partition Palestine into Arab and Jewish states. Partition is ratified by the United Nations (UN). The state of Israel is declared on 14 May 1948. During the subsequent 'War of Independence' with the surrounding Arab states Israel occupies Arab land not included in the partition plan. Israel occupies further Arab territory in the war of 1967. Tensions between the Arabs and Israelis continue to rise, culminating in the 'Intifada' in 1987. The only solution is a peaceful settlement with the Palestinians. Mini biography: Born on 1 March 1922 in Jerusalem, Palestine (now in Israel).

1995. Two years after the signing of the Oslo peace accord between Israel and the Palestinians, protesters fill the streets of Tel Aviv. One holds a placard showing a man washing blood from his hands. Nearby, another protest sign declares, "Cursed be he who uproots Israel from her land." The object of the protesters' wrath is Yitzhak Rabin - a man whose Zionist credentials ought to have been beyond reproach: the first general to serve as prime minister of Israel, the son of a legendary figure in the Jewish underground, the brigade commander who in 1948 evicted 60,000 Palestinians and destroyed their villages in an effort to keep open the road from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

Yitzhak Rabin

I believe that it is my responsibility as the prime minister of Israel to do whatever can be done to exploit the unique opportunities that lie ahead of us to move towards peace. Not everything can be done by one act.

I considered the prevention of war as the test of our security policy; in addition to being able to rapidly and forcefully end any war forced upon us. Yitzhak Rabin Israel has an important principle: It is only Israel that is responsible for our security. Yitzhak Rabin It is not worth the paper it is written on unless it is backed by the kind of force that will make the other side consider the penalties too heavy to break the agreement. Yitzhak Rabin No Arab ruler will consider the peace process seriously so long as he is able to toy with the idea of achieving more by the way of violence.
