Israeli Prime Minister
Yitzhak Rabin spent a total of twenty-six years in the military. He fought in
the 1948 "War of Independence" and helped to plan the 1967 victory in the Six
Day War. After 1967, he became involved in the Israeli foreign service for a
period of five years. During this time he served as the Israeli ambassador to
the United States. In 1974, Rabin became the new Prime Minister of Israel,
replacing Prime Minister Golda Meir who resigned her position due to internal
dispute. His term as Prime Minister ended in 1977 when he was compelled to step down. Rabin entered politics again in 1984, this time as the Israeli Defense Minster. On June 23,1992, Yitzhak Rabin became the Prime Minister of Israel for a

Yitzhak Rabin was horn to Russian immigrants in Jerusalem on
March 1,1922. He spent his childhood in Tel Aviv before studying at
the Kadouri Agriculture School, from which he graduated as the prize
pupil (Rabin, 1979:5-9). He then joined the Haganah, the underground
military arm of the Jewish Agency in Palestine (Rabin, 1979:9-10).
This began a period of twenty-six years spent in the military, in
which he fought in the `war of Independence' in 1948-1949, became Chief-of-Staff of the Israeli Defence Forces in 1964, and helped mastermind Israel's lightning victory over the Arab nations in the Six Day war in 1967 (Magnussun, 1990:1207). After this last success

Rabin, Yitzhak Yitzhak Rabin was born in Jerusalem in 1922; he studied at the Kadoorie Agricultural College where he graduated with distinction. His military career began in 1940 when he joined the "Palmach", the elite unit of the Haganah. During the War of Independence (1948-1949), he commanded the Harel Brigade, deployed on the Jerusalem front. For the next 20 years, he served with the IDF as O.C. Northern Command (1956-1959); as Chief of Operations and Deputy Chief of Staff (1959-1964) and as Chief of Staff (1964-1968), commanding the IDF during the Six-Day War.
On January 1, 1968, he retired from military service and shortly afterwards was appointed ambassador to the United States. During his years as ambassador in Washington, he promoted and consolidated the ties between the two countries. In the spring of 1973, Rabin returned to Israel and became active in the Labour Party. He was elected Member of the Knesset in December 1973 and when Golda Meir formed her government in April 1974, was appointed Minister of Labour.

Yitzhak Rabin
born March 1, 1922, Jerusalem
First native-born prime minister of Israel. He fought in the first Arab-Israeli War and became chief of staff in 1964. His strategies helped win the Six-Day War Israel Labour Party Golan Heights and ordered the raid at Entebbe, Ugan. ( see Entebbe raid intifadah . In 1993 secret negotiations with the Palestinians yielded a political settlement that called for limited Palestinian self-rule in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank , for which he shared the 1994 Nobel Prize for Peace with Shimon Peres and Yasir 'Arafat . He was assassinated by a right-wing Jewish extremist.
