Rabin, Yitzhak
U.S. President Bill Clinton looks on as Yitzhak Rabin, left, shakes hands with Yasir Arafat after signing the Israel-PLO accords in September 1993 [Video] (b. March 1, 1922, Jerusalem, Palestine [now in Israel]d. Nov. 4, 1995, Tel Aviv-Yafo, Israel), Israeli statesman and soldier who, as prime minister of Israel (1974-77, 1992-95), led his country toward peace with its Palestinian and Arab neighbours. He was chief of staff of Israel's armed forces during the Six-Day War (June 1967). Along with Shimon Peres , his foreign minister, and Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) chairman Yasir Arafat , Rabin received the Nobel Prize for Peace in 1994. Rabin graduated from Kadourie Agricultural School in Kfar Tabor and in 1941 joined the Palmach, the Jewish Defense Forces' commando unit. He participated in actions against the Vichy French in Syria and Lebanon. During the Israeli war of independence (1948), he directed the defense of Jerusalem and also fought the Egyptians in the Negev. He graduated (1953) from the British staff college, became chief of staff in January 1964, and conceived the strategies of swift mobilization of reserves and destruction of enemy aircraft on the ground that proved decisive in Israel's victory in the Six-Day War. In 1968, on retirement from the army, Rabin became his country's ambassador to the United States, where he forged a close relationship with U.S. leaders and procured advanced American weapons systems for Israel. He drew fire from Israeli hard-liners because he advocated withdrawal from Arab territories occupied in the 1967 war as part of a general Middle East peace settlement.

Rabin, Yitzhak
Encyclopedia Article Multimedia 3 items Rabin, Yitzhak (1922-1995), first native-born Israeli prime minister (1974-1977, 1992-1995) and Nobel laureate. Rabin was assassinated in 1995 at a peace rally in Tel Aviv because he had indicated a willingness to cede Israeli-occupied territory in the interests of peace with neighboring Arab nations. Rabin had led efforts to negotiate peace settlements between Israel and neighboring Arabs. Born in Jerusalem, in British-controlled Palestine (now Israel), Rabin attended the Kadoorie Agricultural High School from which he graduated with honors. Dedicated to serving his country, Rabin joined the Palmach, the secret commando unit of the Haganah (the major underground Jewish militia), shortly after its formation in 1941. During World War II (1939-1945), the Palmach worked with the United Kingdom to fight the influence of the Germans and their allies in the Middle East. Rabin was appointed a Palmach platoon commander in 1943 and deputy battalion commander in 1944. During these years, he established himself as one of the leading thinkers in the Palmach.

Rabin, Yitzhak Rabin, (1922-1995), was prime minister of Israel from 1974 to 1977 and from 1992 until his death. On Nov. 4, 1995, he was assassinated in Tel Aviv, Israel. A right-wing Israeli university student who opposed Rabin's policies confessed to the murder.
Rabin was born in Jerusalem and was the nation's first prime minister born in Israel. Israel's previous prime ministers were born in Europe. In 1941, during World War II, Rabin joined the Palmach, a unit of the Jewish underground terrorist army in Palestine. He was deputy commander of the Palmach in 1948 during the first Arab-Israeli war. Rabin headed Israel's defense forces from 1964 to 1967. He planned the strategy in a 1967 war in which the Israelis defeated the Arabs and occupied the Arab lands of the Gaza Strip and West Bank.
From 1968 to 1973, Rabin was ambassador to the United States. A Labor Party member, he was elected to Israel's parliament in 1973. He became Labor Party head and prime minister in 1974, and held those posts until 1977. He was minister of defense from 1984 to 1990.
Rabin again became Labor Party head in February 1992. Elections in June brought the party to power, and Rabin became prime minister again. He appointed himself minister of defense. In 1993, Rabin's government and the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) signed an agreement that included the start of a plan for self-government for, and Israel's withdrawal from, the Gaza Strip and West Bank. Israel and the PLO also agreed to try to work out their conflicts. Rabin, Israeli foreign minister Shimon Peres, and PLO leader Yasser Arafat shared the 1994 Nobel Peace Prize for their peace efforts. Also in 1994, talks between Rabin and King Hussein I of Jordan led to a peace treaty ending a state of war that had technically existed between their countries since 1948.
