    Yitzhak Rabin
By Gerald Butt Yitzhak Rabin was a born soldier, dedicated and brave. Equally, he was a clumsy politician, moody, and blunt to the point of rudeness. Yet his military background and his openness as a politician endeared him to many Israelis. Above all, they trusted him. In making peace with the Palestinians, they felt confident he would not compromise Israel's security. Few Israeli leaders have enjoyed the same trust. Public confidence in Rabin stemmed from his military career which began when he was a young man. He was born in Palestine in 1922, of a Russian mother and Ukrainian-American father. In his mid-twenties he was in the Palmach, an elite Jewish commando force, fighting the British. Later, during the war against the Arabs after Israel was created in 1948, Rabin distinguished himself by leading a force that kept open the road between Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, thus preventing an Arab blockade of the latter.

    Yitzhak Rabin
Yitzhak Rabin was born in Jerusalem , in March 1922. His father, Nehemiah, had immigrated to Israel from the United States, and in World War I served as a volunteer in the Jewish Legion. His mother, Rosa, was one of the first members of the Haganah , the mainstream Jewish defense organization. After completing his schooling with distinction, Rabin volunteered for the Palmach, the commando unit of the Jewish community. He served in the Palmach and the Israeli army (I.D.F.) for 27 years, culminating his military career as I.D.F. Chief of Staff. Retiring from I.D.F. service on January 1, 1968, he was appointed Israeli Ambassador to the United States, where he consolidated ties between the two states. Rabin returned to Jerusalem in the Spring of 1973, and became active in the Israel Labor Party . In the December 1973 elections, which followed the Yom Kippur War , he was elected to the Knesset, and when Golda Meir formed her government in April 1974, he was appointed Minister of Labor. This government resigned shortly afterwards, and on June 2, 1974, the Knesset voted confidence in a new government headed by Yitzhak Rabin.

Rabin's alleged killer appears in court
    November 7, 1995
Updated at: 12:18 a.m. EST TEL AVIV, Israel (CNN) The man who confessed to killing Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin appeared in court for the first time Monday. Jewish law student Yigal Amir told the judge the assassination was meant to halt the Mideast peace process. Surrounded by guards and a barrage of journalists, Amir was led into Tel Aviv's main court in the same clothes and black skullcap he wore when he fired the fatal shots Saturday. Amir told Magistrate Dan Arbel that Rabin wanted to "give our country to the Arabs." "We need to be cold-hearted," he said. Arbel told the court: "Before me is a suspect in one of the worst crimes ever committed in Israel, possibly the worst committed at all times in this country. The suspect confesses to the murder of Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin and does not deny that he planned it in advance and did it with a clear mind." Amir was ordered held 15 more days while police draw up charges of premeditated murder, the attempted murder of Rabin's bodyguard and participation in an illegal organization.. His 27-year-old brother, Hagai, also has been arrested and will be held for seven days. Hagai Amir told the court that he gave his brother bullets of the type used to kill Rabin.
