Information about Italy Quasimodo, Salvatore (1901-1968), Italian poet and critic, born in Modica, Sicily. He began to write while working as a civil engineer. By 1938 he had published five books of poems. From 1940 he was drama critic of the journal Tempo. He founded the Hermetic school of Italian poets, who, unable to speak out openly against fascism, had to write in veiled terms using complex symbolism and a sophisticated style. After World War II his writing became more socially committed, reflecting his opposition to the unjust fascist regime, the horror of war, and the feeling of guilt experienced by the Italians, as in Giorno dopo giorna (1947, Day After Day). A collection of his writings on the theatre appeared in 1961. Quasimodo also translated much classical Greek and Latin literature as well as works of Shakespeare and modern British and American poets. He was awarded the 1959 Nobel Prize for literature for expressing "the tragic experience of our time". The Selected Writings of Salvatore Quasimodo (1960) was the first major collection of his work to appear in English. Other works include Il poeta e il politico e altri saggi (1960, The Poet and the Politician and Other Essays) and Dare e avere (1966, To Give and to Have and Other Poems).

Con la sua magistrale traduzione dei Lirici greci, e particolarmente con quella da Saffo, ha operato una sorta di riavvicinamento della lirica antica a quella moderna. Ha preso, controvoglia, un diploma di geometra, s’è iscritto all’università, ha fatto vari lavori (il più noto, perché più duraturo, di impiegato tecnico presso il Genio Civile) per circa due decenni della sua vita, negli anni Venti e Trenta, ma senza mai rinunciare alla poesia, alla cultura. Uno di questi periodi di dispersione lavorativa nel senso più concreto della parola, fra la ricerca di un posto e la successiva sofferenza di un lavoro distraente nei confronti dei reali interessi già bloccati fra poesia e letteratura, Quasimodo lo vive a Roma, nei primi anni Venti, accanto a Bice Donetti. Ma è proprio il tempo della giovinezza che sente il bisogno della cultura: e fra miseria e lavoro, mentre scrive poesie e qualche articolo, il giovane Quasimodo ritiene necessario intraprendere certi studi, approfondire certe letture. Impara, allora, il greco e il latino; lo scopo, è chiaro, sarà quello di leggere i classici nell’originale. Perciò nelle ore libere o di sera si dedica allo studio sotto la guida di un sacerdote, monsignor Mariano Rampolla del Tindaro, probabilmente fratello di Federico, già suo professore all’Istituto Tecnico di Messina. Le carte, le lettere, i ricordi del poeta e degli amici confermano questo studio (fughiamo così definitivamente l’antica questione se Quasimodo conoscesse greco e latino).

Per dieci anni fu funzionario del genio civile e svolse le sue mansioni in Calabria, Liguria, Sardegna, Lombardia. Stabilitosi a Milano, Quasimodo si dedic² completamente alla letteratura ed alla poesia, collabor² a riviste ed ottenne la cattedra di letteratura italiana presso il conservatorio G. Verdi. La sua poesia ottenne vari riconoscimenti tra cui il Nobel nel 1959. Map of Sicily Salvatore Quasimodo, one of Sicily's better known poets, was also a critic, editor and sometime translator. He was born in Modica, near Ragusa in southeastern Sicily, in 1901, the son of a railway stationmaster an important position in the days before widespread use of automobiles. Salvatore initially studied engineering but after leaving school worked at several jobs in civil engineering. He had always loved to write, and his brother-in-law, the novelist Elio Vittorini, encouraged him to pursue writing professionally. His early published work was featured in magazines. His first collection of poems, Waters and Lands , was published in 1930. It includes work written over a number of years, much of which reflected the moods prevalent in Sicily during that time. In 1938, Quasimodo became a magazine editor and, in 1941, a professor of literature in Milan.
