CERN and JINR
CERN's director-general, Robert Aymar , visited the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR) in Dubna on 16 April, together with advisors for non-member-state relations, John Ellis and Nicolas Koulberg . The delegation from CERN toured the laboratories, the experimental workshop and the technological sites at JINR, where a number of systems and parts to be used at the Large Hadron Collider are currently being developed.
Philippe Blanchard
On 10 April Philippe Blanchard , professor in mathematical physics at the University of Bielefeld, received the cross of chevalier of the French "Ordre National du M©rite". Blanchard, who is a former vice-rector of the university, and author of several books on mathematical physics, has interests that include stochastic aspects of quantum theory, percolation theory and self-organized criticality.
Diploma
The Institute for High Energy Physics (IHEP), in Protvino, Russia, has received the diploma and medal of the Fifth International Forum "Advanced Technologies of the XXI Century". The forum was held in Moscow on 19-23 April and the award is "For the development, organization of manufacturing and the promotion of high technologies to internal and external markets."
The institute's achievements in detector and accelerator technologies are one of the factors contributing to the receipt of the award. A long-term collaborator with CERN, IHEP is strongly involved in the production of the equipment for the Large Hadron Collider, as well as for the ATLAS and CMS experiments.

History of the University
University College, Bristol opened in October 1876 with two professors, five lecturers and 99 students. It was the first college in the country to admit men and women on an equal footing. Thirty-two years later, after much hard work by a variety of dedicated individuals and generous financial support from the Wills and Fry families (who made their fortunes in tobacco and chocolate, respectively), the College was ready to petition King Edward VII for a charter that would give it full university status. The King signed the charter in May 1909, and flags flew and churchbells rang across the city. The new University of Bristol opened in October 1909 with 288 undergraduates and some 400 other students. Henry Overton Wills became its first chancellor. The University's reputation grew steadily throughout the 1930s, helped in no small way by the appointment of Winston Churchill as its third Chancellor in 1929. It became known as an institution with formidable academic strengths and an unshakeable commitment to quality - characteristics that are just as apparent now. The story of how the organisation progressed from its humble origins in a house on Park Row to today's massive, international enterprise is briefly told in the timeline below.

IX. EL MUON Y LOS PIONES: YUKAWA, LATTES, OCCHIALINI Y POWELL
IX.1.

Origins and early days of the Bristol school of cosmic-ray physics
W O Lock
CERN, Geneva, Switzerland
Print publication: Issue 4 (July 1990) Abstract. The founder of the Bristol School was Cecil Frank Powell, Nobel Laureate for Physics in 1950 for his discovery of the pi-meson and sometimes called the father of meson physics. The article describes first his early life and his many years of systematic work to perfect the nuclear emulsion technique. This is followed by a brief description of the circumstances of the discovery of the pi-meson and of the so-called 'strange particles'. An attempt is made to give a portrait of Powell and to explain his success in building up one of the first post-war international research teams, which paved the way for large international laboratories such as CERN. The account concludes with some personal memories of the award of the Nobel Prize and of the happy and creative atmosphere which Powell created around him at one of the most exciting times in the physics of cosmic rays since their discovery just after the beginning of the century. doi:10.1088/0143-0807/11/4/001
