    George Fox. 1672.
Fox, 1624-1691, was the founder of the Society of Friends, commonly called Quakers. Suffering persecution in England and Europe, many Friends had sought refuge in the colonies. Many settled in Pennsylvania and some others in Virginia and North Carolina. In North Carolina they would remain locally strong until the abolitionist controversy before 1850. Although itinerant preaching will become a frontier institution identified with the Methodist circuit riders, Fox's travelling, visiting, and preaching anticipates the pattern of the later circuit rider. The distinctive Friends' doctrine of the "inner light" is reflected in this text in his dispute with the doctor and in his discussion with the Indian. The passage is from Fox's Journal After this, our way to Carolina grew worse, being much of it plashy, and pretty full of great bogs and swamps; so that we were commonly wet to the knees, and lay abroad anight in the woods by a fire: saving one of the nights we got to a poor house at Sommertown, and lay by the fire. The woman of the house had a sense of God upon her. The report of our travel had reached thither, and drawn some that lived beyond Sommertown to that house, in expectation to have seen and heard us; but they missed us. Next day, the twenty-first of the ninth month, having travelled hard through the woods, and over many bogs and swamps, we reached Bonner's creek; there we lay that night by the fire-side, the woman lending us a mat to lie on.

some of the fullest percussion that you’ve ever heard and he does it on a 5 piece trap. Couple of extra cymbals but hey, 5 piece trap. That’s all I got to say. He is all rims, and cymbals, and got that beat going and everybody’s going on doing their own funky thing and then all of a sudden, bang! Johnny brings everybody back together on time, in sync with one drop of the stick. AMAZING. George is a number one player too. Got to be one of the kings of the funky bass. Tonight he sounded different. When I’ve seen him in the past he’s been all popping, and funky and fooling around but tonight he was jazzy George. And it was cool. That’s the only way I can describe the sound. June wailing away on guitar, Johnny doing the drum thing so well, and George. Playing slick and smooth. The second set was equally as much fun with June doing some perfect Hendrix (Purple Haze) and George turning into a cross between Otis Redding and Sly. These were some players who were having a good time. So were we. Personally I don’t get to see a lot of that New Orleans kind of sound around here so when guys like this play I make every effort to go out and see them. This was most certainly worth a trip.

[Trad., Child #53 Sung by Joseph Taylor and Mr Thompson and recorded on wax cylinders for Percy Grainger in 1908; this was published in 1972 on the LP Unto Brigg Fair . This track was included in 1996 on the Topic anthology Hidden English: A Celebration of English Traditional Music . It was also sung by the Albion Country Band Mk1 on Steve Ashley's album Stroll On , by Chris Wood on Wood - Wilson - Carthy Heartoutbursts: English Folksongs collected by Percy Grainger . Bob Copper reports gathering parts of just two stanzas from Frank 'Mush' Bond when he was collecting for the BBC : see Chapter 15, pp. 123-134, of Songs and Southern Breezes for the details; and the appendix for the words found below. Tony Barrand notes on Heartoutbursts Grainger recorded a number of versions of Lord Bateman, all quite similar, from the singing of Joseph Taylor, George Wray, Joseph Leaning, and Mr. Thomson. It was one of the most popular of all the ballads, well known among traditional singers on both sides of the Atlantic. It's certainly a good tale, and it's nice to have an occasional long ballad that doesn't end in tragedy and death for all the protagonists. And Chris Wood said in the Wood - Wilson - Carthy sleeve notes: This CD has been a most enjoyable experience but the cherry on the cake for me is the recording of this song, I've been living with for about eight years and the relief finally 'coming out' is no small thing. Martin [Carthy] tells me that it is the story of Gilbert Bekett and Shusha Pye who, after the song finishes, apparently went on to have a son called Thomas. It's re-written all over the place principally with the intention of shortening it.

    The Porter's Son
A translation of Hans Christian Andersen's "Portnerens Søn" by Jean Hersholt
The General's family lived on the first floor, and the Porter's family lived in the cellar. There was a vast distance between them - the whole first floor, as well as all the grades of society; but both families lived under the same roof, and their windows looked out in the same street and the same garden. In this garden there was a blooming acacia - whenever it did bloom - and sometimes the smartly dressed nurse would sit under it with the still more smartly dressed child, the General's "Little Emilie." The Porter's little son, with his dark hair and large brown eyes, used to dance barefoot before them; and the little girl would laugh and stretch her tiny hands out to him. And if the General saw this from his window he would nod down at them and say, "Charmant!" The General's wife, who was so young that she might almost have been her husband's daughter by an earlier marriage, never herself looked out into the yard; but she had given orders that the Porter's boy could play near her own child, but never touch it. And the nurse strictly carried out the lady's orders.

Roll of Dishonour Filed under: An appointed House of Lords is just as bad as an hereditary one
By George Monbiot. Published in the Guardian 29th July 1997. This government glories in returning power to the people. Its publication of the devolution white papers last week began, we were told, one of greatest renunciations of political power ever contemplated. All that stands in the way of this joyful revolution is the House of Lords, whose hereditary peers have twice defeated the Referendums Bill. But, ever valiant, Tony Blair will ensure that nothing be allowed to stand in the way of the popular will: he will appoint some new life peers to confront the despotic dukes. His uncompromising rebuttal of the spawn of royal bastards and murderous turncoats will be praised as another nail in the coffin of unaccountable authority and another great blow for people power. The arguments against the voting rights of hereditary peers have been well-made and well-received, and there are few people in Britain who would not be glad to see the back of them. But might we not be missing something? If the power of hereditary peers is illegitimate because it has never been subjected to democratic consent, then the same formula surely applies to the power of appointed peers. Why are the voting rights of Lord Wyatt and Lord Archer or, for that matter, Lord Simon and Lord Rogers, any more legitimate than those of the Duke of Rutland? To hand power back to the people, Tony Blair will appoint a new clutch of legislators over whom we have absolutely no control.

His wife and child were with him. No public service is planned at this time. George Harrison's solo career was a disappointment to a lot of people. The few songs he got onto the Beatles records - "Tax Man," "While My Guitar Gently Weeps," "Something" - hinted at a genuine songwriting talent. And his debut solo album was a landmark, fusing Harrison's spacey Eastern mysticism with a roaring big-band British rock sound that's rarely been matched since. But a series of albums throughout the 70s suffered from creaking vocals, preachy lyrics, and an occasionally slipshod approach to production, despite top-notch session players and continuing support from 60s superstars like Eric Clapton and the other Beatles. By the 80s he had pretty much lost interest in music, shifting instead to a new career as a movie producer. Indeed, after 1987's Cloud 9 he stopped making studio albums completely, despite one live record and a couple of collaborations with
