History
A sweepstake of 25 guineas was held over two miles (3 km) on Cantley Common , two miles (3 km) east of the current racecourse, on 24th September 1776. The rules stipulated that colts should carry eight stone (50.8 kg) of weight, and fillies seven stone twelve pounds (49.9 kg). The event was organised by Charles Watson-Wentworth, 2nd Marquess of Rockingham (a prominent politician and former Prime Minister ) and was the idea of Lieutenant Colonel Anthony St Leger (a former MP ). On the day, the winning horse (from a field of five) was owned by Rockingham, with a horse owned by St Leger following in second. The event didn't receive its name until a meeting held between the and meets. When it was suggested that the race should be called the

Gaunt House
Besides his town palace, the Marquis had castles and palaces in various quarters of the three kingdoms, whereof the descriptions may be found in the road-books—Castle Strongbow, with its woods, on the Shannon shore; Gaunt Castle, in Carmarthenshire, where Richard II was taken prisoner—Gauntly Hall in Yorkshire, where I have been informed there were two hundred silver teapots for the breakfasts of the guests of the house, with everything to correspond in splendour; and Stillbrook in Hampshire, which was my lord’s farm, an humble place of residence, of which we all remember the wonderful furniture which was sold at my lord’s demise by a late celebrated auctioneer.
So, if Mr. Eaves’s information be correct, it is very likely that this lady, in her high station, had to submit to many a private indignity and to hide many secret griefs under a calm face. And let us, my brethren who have not our names in the Red Book, console ourselves by thinking comfortably how miserable our betters may be, and that Damocles, who sits on satin cushions and is served on gold plate, has an awful sword hanging over his head in the shape of a bailiff, or an hereditary disease, or a family secret, which peeps out every now and then from the embroidered arras in a ghastly manner, and will be sure to drop one day or the other in the right place.
My Lord Gaunt married, as every person who frequents the Peerage knows, the Lady Blanche Thistlewood, a daughter of the noble house of Bareacres, before mentioned in this veracious history. A wing of Gaunt House was assigned to this couple; for the head of the family chose to govern it, and while he reigned to reign supreme; his son and heir, however, living little at home, disagreeing with his wife, and borrowing upon post-obits such moneys as he required beyond the very moderate sums which his father was disposed to allow him. The Marquis knew every shilling of his son’s debts. At his lamented demise, he was found himself to be possessor of many of his heir’s bonds, purchased for their benefit, and devised by his Lordship to the children of his younger son.

Obituary: Lord Porter of Luddenham, OM, FRS
Former Chancellor of the University of Leicester, Lord Porter of Luddenham, OM, FRS, died on Saturday, August 31, aged 81. The University’s third Chancellor, he served between 1984 and 1995. One of the most highly regarded and well-known scientists in Britain, and a Nobel prize-winner, he had a gift for communicating his enthusiasm for science. It was for his work on techniques for observing and studying extremely fast chemical reactions during the processes of combustion, explosion and chain reaction that, with his Cambridge colleague Professor Ronald Norrish, and with the German scholar Manfred Eigen, he shared the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1967. Porter and Norrish developed flash photolysis, using pulses of light even shorter than the reactions they sought to study, to open up a window onto a hitherto impenetrable world.
Lord Porter of Luddenham, OM, FRS Underpinning Porter’s science was a bedrock of everyday reality, and a profound concern for the future of mankind and the interlinked physical and biological systems of the planet. If the processes of photosynthesis could be unravelled, then mankind might be able to solve its energy problems and look forward to a truly sustainable future. Far from being remote these considerations were basic, and the questions posed were those that any child might ask. Thus Porter’s great interest in encouraging young people to understand science followed naturally from his academic study.

I entered Bristol on the Seventh day of the week. The day before, the soldiers came with their muskets into the meeting, and were exceedingly rude, beating and striking Friends with them, and drove them out of the orchard in a great rage, threatening what they would do if Friends came there again. For the mayor and the commander of the soldiers had, it seems, combined together to make a disturbance amongst Friends. When Friends told me what a rage there was in the town, how they were threatened by the mayor and soldiers, and how unruly the soldiers had been the day before, I sent for several Friends, as George Bishop, Thomas Gouldney, Thomas Speed, and Edward Pyot, and desired them to go to the mayor and aldermen, and request them, seeing he and they had broken up our meetings, to let Friends have the town-hall to meet in. For the use of it Friends would give them twenty pounds a year, to be distributed amongst the poor and when the mayor and aldermen had business to do in it, Friends would not meet in it, but only on First-days. These Friends were astonished at this, and said the mayor and aldermen would think that they were mad. I said, Nay; for this would be a considerable benefit to the poor. And it was upon me from the Lord to bid them go. At last they consented, and went, though in the cross to their own wills.

Anthony van Dyck (Antonis van Dijck) is one of the greatest Flemish painters. He was born on the 23rd of March, 1599 in Antwerp, 7th child in the family of a well-to-do silk merchant Frans van Dyck. After the early death of his mother he, at the age of 10, was sent to be trained by painter Hendrick van Balen in his workshop. In 1615, he already had his own workshop and an apprentice. In 1618, he was accepted as a full member of the Lucas Guild of painters. In 1618-1620, Van Dyck was working with Rubens as his pupil and assistant. He took part in the painting of the Jesuit Church in Antwerp. Also he painted such religious works as Samson and Delilah The Crowning with Thorns Judas' Kiss St. Martin Dividing His Cloak (1620-1621) and portraits: Frans Snyders Margareta de Vos Family Portrait (1621) and several known self-portraits . Although Van Dyck was with Rubens little more than two years, the older master's style affected his own indelibly.

George Carey, Former Archbishop of Canterbury, Named Distinguished Visiting Scholar at John W. Kluge Center
George Leonard Carey, former archbishop of Canterbury and head of the worldwide Anglican Communion, has been named distinguished visiting scholar at the John W. Kluge Center at the Library of Congress. In a series of short visits to the Kluge Center, Lord Carey will research and explore "poverty and the role of religious communities in either hindering development or making development possible." His first three-week visit will start Nov. 15, 2005. He will return in 2006 for several more periods of research. While in Washington, he will be hosted by All Saints’ Episcopal Church, in Chevy Chase, Md., and will be archbishop-in-residence at the parish. Born in the East End of London in 1935, Lord Carey, the son of a porter, left school at the age of 15 and began work with the London Electricity Board. He then served with the British armed forces in Iraq in the 1950s and later attended King’s College, London, and the London College of Divinity. Ordained deacon in the Church of England in 1962, he became curate at a North London church and joined the staff at Oak Hill Theological College as a lecturer in theology. Later, he moved to St. John’s College, Nottingham, where he received his doctorate and served as chaplain. As vicar of St. Nicholas Church, Durham, he led the church in a program of expansion and renewal, describing his work there in a book, "The Church in the Market Place" (1984).
