The words of pople john XXIII need to be remembered again If you want peace, work for justice. And working for justice will involve conflictconflict

IF YOU WANT PEACE Byron C. Bangert
First Presbterian Church, Bloomington, Indiana
December 6, 1998 Isaiah 11:1-10; Matthew 3:1-12 If you want peace . . . IF you want peace? Who does not want peace? Of course we all want peace. Who likes conflict? or violence? or war? Not even the Generals want war! If you want peace, prepare for war. That's the conventional wisdom of many political and military leaders. The surest way to avoid conflict and violence and war is to be fully prepared to counter the attacks of the enemy. If and when it is clear that there is nothing to be gained by war, then rational human beings will not engage in it. So, in the nuclear age, we have come to know about and practice M.A.D.mutual assured destruction. If the enemywhoever that is these days is not so clear as once it wasbut, if the enemy knows that we can wipe them out, and if we know that they can wipe us out, then neither of us will have any incentive to go to war. There is a clear logic at work here. It makes perfect sense, so long as you can count on the enemy to be rational and reasonable. And so long as it is not possible for fatal mistakes to be made. Mutual assured destruction may even work for a while with an irrational enemy, with an enemy who will not listen to reason. Sometimes the only thing that will stop the violence of another is the clear and certain threat that any violence will be met with even greater violence. But the checking of one power by an equal or greater power is hardly a stable situation. The absence of war is not the same as peace. The wolf and the lamb may be persuaded to lie down together, but the lamb will not get much sleep. Not so long as the wolf has the capacity and inclination to behave like a wolf. It is not sufficient to thwart the impulses toward violence or war. Peace requires a material transformation in circumstances. There must be a seismic shift in the configurations of power, in the distribution of resources, in the lay of the land. The grounds for war must give way to grounds for peace.

A leader for a pilgrim church
I'm not sure what the usage is in many places, but at our parish, we observed nine days of mourning for Pope John Paul starting immediately after his death, and concluded with a special Mass last Monday night. His body is now at rest in the earth as he asked, and the conclave starts in a few hours. We may never in this life understand all that John Paul did for our church we haven't really closed the book on the effects of many of the popes of the last century or so. But we can start to get some perspective. Many call for immediate sainthood, while others, both in and out of our church, point to feet of clay. I think that the proper place to start is not with how we see this one dear and holy man, but how we see our Church, and how the Church changed over the past 50 years. God gathered together as one all those who in faith look upon Jesus as the author of salvation and the source of unity and peace, and established them as the Church that for each and all it may be the visible sacrament of this saving unity. While it transcends all limits of time and confines of race, the Church is destined to extend to all regions of the earth and so enters into the history of mankind. Moving forward through trial and tribulation, the Church is strengthened by the power of God's grace, which was promised to her by the Lord, so that in the weakness of the flesh she may not waver from perfect fidelity, but remain a bride worthy of her Lord, and moved by the Holy Spirit may never cease to renew herself, until through the Cross she arrives at the light which knows no setting. Farewell to John Pople
Leo Radom
I am sorry to be passing on the news that John Pople passed away on Monday, March 15 after a brief illness. Professor Pople was the father of modern computational quantum chemistry and received the 1998 Nobel Prize in Chemistry (together with Walter Kohn) for his seminal contributions in this area (see Poster outside Room 309 for more details). He was the person most responsible for converting computational quantum chemistry from a tool used only by specialist theoreticians to the widespread research instrument that it is today. He received a knighthood to become Sir John Pople in 2003.
Professor Pople had strong links with Australia in general and RSC in particular, making close to 10 academic visits to the School in the 1980s and 1990s. He was one of the very early Birch Lecturers. Several of his most prominent students/postdocs were antipodeans, including David Buckingham, Peter Gill and Martin Head-Gordon. I had the good fortune to spend more than 3 years as a postdoc with him in the early 1970s. In recognition of his international status and Australian links, Professor Pople was appointed a Corresponding Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science in 1993.

John Anthony Pople
Sir John Anthony Pople 31. Oktober in Burnham-on-Sea 15.
