My early life was spent in Burnham-on-Sea, Somerset, a small seaside resort town (population around 5000) on the west coast of England. I was born on October 31, 1925 and lived there with my parents until shortly after the end of the Second World War in 1946. No member of my family was involved in any scientific or technical activity. Indeed, I was the first to attend a university.
My father, Keith Pople, owned the principal men's clothing store in Burnham. In addition to selling clothes in the shop, he used to drive around the surrounding countryside with a car full of clothes for people in remote farms and villages. He was resourceful and made a fair income, considering the economic difficulties during the depression of the 1930s. My great-grandfather had come to Burnham around 1850 and set up a number of local businesses. He had a large family and these were split up among his children. As a result, I had relatives in many of the other businesses in the town. My grandfather inherited the clothing shop and this passed to my father when he returned from the army at end of the First World War.
My mother, Mary Jones, came from a farming background. Her father had moved from Shropshire as a young man and had farmed near Bath for most of his life. I suspect that he would have preferred to be a teacher, for he had a large collection of books and encyclopedias. He wanted my mother to be a schoolteacher, but this did not happen. Instead, she became a tutor to children in a rich family and, later, a librarian in the army during the first war. Most of her relatives were farmers in various parts of Somerset and Wiltshire so, as small children, my younger brother and I spent much time staying on farms.

Pople in the early 1950s
John Anthony Pople was born in 1925 in England. His primary interests before and during his undergraduate work in post-war Britain was in mathematics. He obtained his Ph.D.at Cambridge University, UK, in 1950 working with Lennard-Jones on valence theory, in particular applications to the water molecule. His thesis dealt with many aspects of water, including its response properties and bonding structures.
Pople had moved to Carnegie-Mellon University in Pittsburgh, PA, in 1958 and in 1986 he went to Northwestern University in Chicago, IL.
Pople's first major contribution was a theory of approximate MO calculations on pi-electron systems, similar/identical to the one developed by Rudolph Pariser and Robert G. Parr

The Origin of PPP Theory

Department of Chemistry, Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh Pennsylvania 15213
Abstract

An historical account is given of the part played by the author in the development of PPP theory in the early 1950s. The Origin of PPP - Theory My principal contribution to PPP theory took place in the autumn of 1952. At that time, quantum chemistry was still at a primitive stage of development. Full computational treatments were almost entirely limited to two-electron or monatomic systems and were carried out tediously on manual (or sometimes electric-powered) calculators. Some important formal developments had taken place. The

Auto-biography Dear Friends, I have been convinced for many years that the greatest treasure of doing science, humanly speaking, is the deep friendships that are built over the years. Thus it is with sadness that I must tell those of you who have not yet heard that our mutual friend John Pople died yesterday. John was a recipient of the WATOC Schroedinger Medal, a WATOC Fellow, and a member of the WATOC Board from its inception. John was a private person. On February 15 Hilary Pople, John's daughter, wrote to a group of twelve including Paul Schleyer, Leo Radom and me. Hilary and later George Schatz related that John underwent colon surgery the week before, and the surgeons discovered a massive spread of the disease to the liver. Hilary indicated that the family was gathering, but that John was too weak for other visitors or telephone calls. Today Hilary wrote to say that yesterday (March 15) John died peacefully, surrounded by his family. The memorial service for John will be held Monday, March 29 at 11:30 AM at the First United Methodist Church, 516 Church Street, Evanston. Evanston is just north of Chicago. All WATOC Members and friends are welcome. Through the good offices of Leo Radom, I came to know John and Joy Pople quite well. While on leave at the Australian National University, the Poples and the Schaefers lived a few hundred yards away during four or five beautiful Southern Hemisphere summers. My children loved to visit Mrs. Pople. John and I would have lunch together every day with Leo, supplemented by many hours of discussions on science and other topics. John was a quiet man, but a wonderful friend for those who were fortunate enough to get to know him well. I believe that John felt his time had come. He never really recovered from the loss of his beloved wife Joy two years ago. He had accomplished what he wanted and was at peace with God. We will miss him greatly. Very truly yours, Fritz Schaefer Auto-biography
